Its been 2 years this month since I graduated from the Karen Pryor Academy - Dog Trainer Professional Program. What an amazing experience - it was hard work but totally worth it. Met some great people and their dogs. And of course I had the pleasure of working with the amazing Augie - not facing the camera of course!

Exploring our wonderful country! Here we are at the southern most point of mainland Canada at Point Pelee park. They even had a dog-friendly shuttle bus down to the point, so Holly & Stella had their first bus ride!

We were lucky to have a front row seat to yesterdays solar eclipse from our front yard. What an amazing sight! You can see how dark it was by the light shining from the kennel window in the pic. (All dogs were inside and seemed unaffected by it all.)

Mya working on a puzzle toy - we help her out along the way with a few easy wins to avoid frustration - she is super food-motivated! What a clever girl!

Mya worked on her recall while she was boarding - what a great student! Does your dog come back to you but then dart away at the last minute? Pro tip: teach them a finish to their recall, like an offered sit or stand behavior. Gives you time to calmly attach a leash, collar etc.

Big week next week! After completing 5 online modules, 5 online exams, 3 written assessments, 3 video assessments and teaching Augie 6 different exercises, we are ready for our first KPA Dog Trainer Professional workshop in Toronto. Did I also say I clicker trained a chicken as well....

Husbands have lots of uses - Jody makes a nice table here for the Nashman to jump over. Thanks Jody for your support of "all things dog" for me!

Our Story

Laura, who owns Birchview Dog Boarding with her husband Jody, is a lifelong animal lover and dog owner.

“From as long as I can remember I have been passionate about working with animals. I spent my career in the agricultural livestock sector, after gaining a number of degrees in animal science and behavior. During this time I worked with all kinds of animals in a number of different countries.”

A few years ago we purchased a rural property just outside Scotland with the intention of pursing my dream to work with dogs and build my own pet care business. And Birchview Dog Boarding became a reality! This is also where we live with our own two rescue dogs, Holly & Stella.

Our mission at Birchview Dog Boarding is to provide quality, personal care for your dog at a reasonable cost. And of course lots of “paw-some” doggie fun as well!
