Our dear Nina was able to experience several final bucket list items before she passed on Dec 18/24. This included a trip to Tim Hortons, puzzle time, kong with peanut butter, nightly massages and heating pad. She led such a full, joyful life in her last 3 months. As anyone does when grieving the loss of a family member, here at Wendal’s Way, we’ve been remembering Nina. She may be gone, but she is most definitely not forgotten, and we’d like to share some of those memories.

🎊 Happy New Year 🎊

On New Year's Day we look back at the year just past, and forward to the year to come. 2024 began in a very traumatic and difficult way, but out of that chaos something wonderful was born - Wendal’s Way was our life raft in a sea of turbulent waters. Starting an animal rescue is no easy feat, and has required a lot of focus, time, and sacrifice. But it was vital to us that we rise above the chaos to re-establish and then rebuild an ethical, transparent and legitimate dachshund rescue in the Maritimes. Not for us, but for the dogs who need us like angel Nina and little Jessie. We know though that a rescue isn't about the people who run it, but about the volunteers and supporters - without you, we couldn't do this vital work. We are so incredibly grateful to all of you who have come on the journey with us, with your generous contributions of time and money. A perfect ending to 2024 and here’s to an even better 2025. Happy New Year and much love.

Congratulations to the winner of our Holiday Memory Quilt Draw….Sandra Cox!

To those of you who chose to remember your beloved pets through our Holiday Memory Quilt. To Lisa our volunteer who jumped at the task when asked to manage today’s gift basket draw. To Gary Springer, the owner of Tims Hortons Quispamsis who kindly donated today’s incredible gift basket.

From this Memory Quilt, we raised $1,200! So Jessie would also like to thank everyone for their generosity as it has made a big dent in her vet bills. Her dental surgery was extensive because she had to lose 22 teeth. But our little girl is recovering well, and with the help of her foster, she's getting lots of walks and is slowly, steadily, losing some of her extra weight. She’s going to feel SO much better…thanks to all of you!

UPDATE:
It was a big day for an old girl with the loss of 22 teeth! But she’s home safe and sound with her foster mom, and her mouth will soon be feeling so much better with all those rotten old teeth gone. Needless to say today’s surgery came with a hefty price tag. We know it’s a big ask at this time of year, but if you are able to donate towards Jessie’s vet bill, no matter how small the amount, we would appreciate it so much. Jessie says thank you!

Today's the day. Jessie is having her dental procedure done and we expect her to lose most, if not all, of her teeth. Let's send her positive vibes hoping it goes smoothly. Good luck Jessie-girl!

A loving tribute from Nina’s foster family, a testament to her lasting impact:

A girl discarded by her previous family as she aged and showed her health issues- left alone, with cancer. Little did she know a rescue all the way in Nova Scotia had just launched, and she would be their first save. Although Nina spent only 3 months with us, we like to think they were her best 3 months. A heated bed, playing with a treat puzzle every night, watching the cows and smelling the fresh country air (which she loved!). Not to mention the endless rolling in the grass, belly rubs, and constant companion in her foster mom. Never leaving Nina’s side, over 3 months they built a special bond. She knew they didn’t have long together but she loved her just the same. Doting on Princess Nina’s every need, knowing time was limited. As soon as Nina showed signs of change, she went to the doctor and it breaks our hearts to say that she is no longer here. Though her story with us may be short, it will live on forever as Wendal’s Way’s first rescue. You will live on, Nina.

PS…While chocolate is toxic to dogs, this Hershey Kiss was an exception, a special treat in Nina’s last hours.

It is with broken hearts we have to share the news that Nina passed away earlier today. Although we knew she had terminal cancer, it was still unexpected. She went peacefully and surrounded by love, held by her foster moms as she was helped to the Bridge by her vet at Penhorn Animal Hospital. Through the love of her foster family and all of your generous support, we were able to give Nina the best last 3 months of her life.

In Nina’s honour, Wendal’s Way will go dark for 24 hours.
