Now that we have spent all dental month discussing disease, we are now going to talk about prevention!
Do you ever feel those fuzzies on your teeth if you haven’t brushed in a while? 🦠 Can you imagine NEVER brushing your teeth or visiting the dentist? Well, it is equally as important for our pets!
So how do we set up our pets for success with tooth brushing?
🦷 Right place and right time - make sure you are not rushed and it’s a place your pet feels safe
🦷 Get all your tools ready
🦷 Find your pet’s favourite treat and let them lick it off the brush (peanut butter, cheese whiz, pet toothpaste, wet dog food, etc.) - you can use this treat to brush with at the beginning 😁
🦷 Practice, practice, practice!
🦷 Finish with a reward!
Dogs and cats tend to accumulate more tartar on the outsides of their teeth. In an ideal world we would brush all surfaces of the teeth but brushing outsides of tooth surfaces every day is better than all surfaces every now and then!
Below is Dr. Kara demonstrating this technique on her beagle Valentino 🪥🐶
Wishing our Amazing Inventory Manager, Lorraine a Happy Birthday! Vala, owned by our own Dr. Julia Case joined in on the harmony! Happy Birthday Lorraine!
When your new diet plan is just not working.. 🫢
Happy Sunday!
Happy tails, happy Monday. ☺️☺️
Everyone needs to start their day with this. 😻You’re welcome! Have a great week.
We are closed today to celebrate Canada Day!
Many of us will be attending fireworks displays and celebrations for the first time in a couple of years-this is very exciting! Many also got dogs through those couple of years and may think it’s fun to take them to the celebrations. Your dog will likely think otherwise; it’s going to be very hot and fireworks are often extremely stressful for them. 🐶🥵🎆😬We strongly advise keeping your dogs at home and enjoying the festivities with just your people. Have a beautiful day celebrating our great country.😎🤩☀️
Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

A huge congratulations to Jody who passed the VTNE-just last night-and is now an official RVT. 3 years of hard work doing this course while she worked full time. We are so very proud. 🥰Please give her lots of likes to show her how proud you all are. 🎉💥🎉💥
If there is delayed opening and/or cancelled appointments we will try to contact each client individually. Enjoy the snowfall and stay safe❤️
This is Miss Calli. 😻She is 9 years old, extremely affectionate and is looking for a special home to live out her senior years . She has been with us for a couple of weeks recovering from a severe skin infection brought on by an allergy to fleas, and although we have been getting to know and love her, we cannot keep her as she does not get along with other cats or dogs.
As mentioned, she has a flea allergy and so must be on monthly flea control as prevention. She also needs to be on an exclusive hypoallergenic diet called D/D (Hills has graciously offered to supply the lucky new home with 2 bags to get started-thank you Hills!). She has had full blood work which checks out perfectly. ✅ She has a wobbly hind end which has been X-rayed and there does not appear to be a problem-she gets around just fine. 😊😊
If you think you can provide this special girl a special home, please let us know. Give us a call at 902-543-5602.
Senior Focus month is soon coming to an end, but we’ve got more staff senior pets to share! Today we’re sharing Dr. Melanie C’s sweet girl, Lexa.
Lexa turned 12 this year and suddenly went deaf this past spring after a chronic battle with ear problems and damage to her hearing apparatus. Up until then she had been spry and extremely mobile, but this sudden trauma to her ears made her feel and act “her age”.
Aside from hearing loss, which caused severe anxiety, the trauma also caused mobility and balance issues, difficulty chewing and lethargy. She now wears bells so her family knows where she is when it’s safe for her to be off-leash, she is on pain management for her aches (which now seem more prominent), anti-anxiety medication has helped her to adapt to her new non-hearing normal and she has had blood work to monitor her recovery and to make sure her medications are safe to use.
Think you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? She has learned sign language and relies on body language and facial expression for cues and a tap on the bum gets her attention. As a bonus, she gets yummy treats more then she ever did in her previous 11 years (she’ll do anything for Crazy Dog dehydrated lung). 😋
It’s been challenging to watch this special girl suddenly age, but with medication, training and maybe a little bit of spoiling (😉), she’s a pretty happy dog again. 💕🐶💕
Check out the video below to see Lexa enjoying a beach run, and another video in the comments of this smart girl responding to hand gestures!
Exciting announcement! 📣📣 We have decided that Waffles is going to stay with us to entertain clients and patients alike. 😀His health concerns became too complicated to consider adopting him out (although we had some lovely people willing to give it a try❤️). He and Marshall are working things out. 😜😻😻Please help us welcome Waffles to the South Shore Vet family. 🤗🎉
Oreo is hoping you are having a good Monday. More baby cuteness. ❤️🐐
