So many "Bad Dogs" end up in pounds or rescues when all they need is some basic obedience training.

I was wondering if there would be an interest to have a group class for your dog(s) and children. The class would be focused on how they can be involved in training their dog as well as rules to follow with their dog or any dog they may encounter.

Happy Canada Day everyone. Today while we celebrate our beautiful country, be sure to think about your pets. If your dog does not do well around loud sounds then perhaps don't bring them around a parade or fireworks exhibition. As well, take a moment to think about how your dog may act while surrounded by people (most of whom do not know how to properly address a dog) as well as other dogs, vehicles and any of the other triggers that may affect your dog. As owners, we must look out for our furry family members and always put them in the best possible situations.

Holy Canada it's COLD, -31 at the moment and nope I have no plans to break out my pants today. I often get asked by clients if it is to cold to walk their dog in this cold, the answer is yes and no.

Unless you have one of the few breeds of dog that are bred for cold weather(Husky, Malamutes, Saint Bernard, Shiba Inu....) then the answer is YES it would not be a good idea to take your dog out walking. You can let your dog out for short periods in the back yard and do their exercising in the house. there are many games you can play with your dog to challenge them physically and mentally, or better yet take this time to work on training.

If you do decide to walk your dog please be sure to keep an eye on them and look for signs of them being cold or showing signs of hypothermia. these signs can be shivering, acting anxious, whining, or slowing down. If they start to search out a warm place to lie down or hold up one or more paws, it is probably a good time to head inside and warm up.

Exercise
Like humans, it is important that your dog gets enough exercise every day. Good exercise uses both mental and physical muscles and is important for social development and keeping destructive tendencies away.
The amount of exercise a dog needs depends on their breed and age. A general rule of thumb is that your dog should get between 30 minutes and 2 hours a day. This does not mean they must be walked for 2 hours at time, exercise can be walking/running or playtime with toys or humans.
With that being said, it can be difficult for some owners to get out in the snow, slush and cold weather. Inglis Canine Services offers a dog walking service at intervals of 15 mins, 30 mins, 45 mins and 1 hour.
Please contact me for more details or with any questions.

GREAT NEWS, we have decided to extend our Walk Promotion until December 24th. This would be a great gift for a friend or family member that doesn't like to walk in our cold, snowy, icy Canadian Winters.

I love hearing stories about people adopting or rescuing a dog that then becomes a loving member of the family.

Now, just like it is written in the Animatch post below, the dog does not come trained, with a known history nor a known personality. It is worth your while to invest in at least some Basic Obedience training or a Puppy(Dog) Manners course to learn the rights steps to put both you and your new dog on the right path.

If you have any questions about training classes please feel free to reach out to me.

A BIG Thank you to Animatch Dog Adoption for all you do.

Animatch is a non-profit dog adoption service. We currently have Atlas a 7 months old Great Dane x Lab Dog who is Available for Adoption. Click here for more details and photos about Atlas »

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Make a difference for pets in need during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!

Did you know that in 2019, Canadian shelters took in around 28,000 dogs? Here are just some of the many ways you can help shelter dogs:

🐶 If you are ready to open your heart and home to an animal in need, and have the means to support them, please consider adopting a pet today.
🎁 Giving to SPCA’s, humane societies, rescues, and shelters will help support rescues, grants, and adoption programs, and will help get so many more animals off the streets and out of harm’s way.
📣 Spread the word. Post it on Twitter, Facebook, and any other social media you can think of using .
❤️ Many SPCA’s, Humane Societies, Rescues, and Shelters look for volunteers. Reach out and offer the dogs and workers your time! You won’t regret it.

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.

It is very important to keep your dog on a leash.
09/28/2021

It is very important to keep your dog on a leash.

It really doesn’t matter if your dog is friendly or not.

What matters is that you don’t take the choice away from another owner (and their dog) as to who they interact with.

There can be so many reasons why a dog and their owner need space from you and your dog.

Please allow them that choice 💙
