Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

As a friendly reminder to all, as many of you may know we have temporarily closed as we are on a brief maternity leave.
We welcomed a sweet baby boy last week and are soaking up all the snuggles!🥰

This business has been my baby since we started up in 2018, I have been honoured to care for your babies over these last 5 years, now it’s time for it to take a turn on the back burner while I focus on my own little bundle of joy.
Rest assured, we will be returning so please stay tuned. However, at this time it is undetemined of when we will be returning to grooming. We are excited for this special time off to grow and raise our little family and do not want to rush things as times goes by too quickly with little ones.

We ask that you please respect that this is a special time for us and refrain from messaging us regarding our return. Please allow for us to reach out to you once we feel comfortable to return back to grooming. However, we are happy to send along a list of local groomers if requested.
Thank you so much for your continued support!🤍

We are currently functioning in crisis mode.

Between both centers, we have 345 animals in our care and 139 on our waitlist. This year alone, we have taken in 1,066 stray and abandoned animals.

Adoptions have slowed despite reducing adoption fees, donation sizes have decreased, demand for outreach programs and low-cost veterinary services has skyrocketed, a high volume of animals coming into our centers, and call volumes for surrendering have significantly increased.

Please be patient with our staff. We are trying our best. ❤️

What's just as fun as tick season? Black Fly season! It's that time of year again where we start seeing dogs for mysterious red spots on their bellies. Sometimes the spots are bright red roundish splotches, and sometimes they are bullseye shaped. These are the mark of the Black Fly, an annoying little blood sucking bug that lurks in the grass in spring and early summer. Especially active in the mornings and evenings, these little pests love to bite dogs on their bellies and scare owners into thinking their pet has Lyme disease or ringworm. No, most of the time it is just the Black Fly. These lesions are usually not dangerous and will heal on their own. Sometimes they do become infected, and in those cases veterinary care is needed. Pet safe bug spray can be used to help prevent Black Fly bites. Just remember never to spray anything containing DEET on your pets.

PLEASE READ!!!
We had hoped it wouldn’t come to this…
However as we see this becoming more of an issue, we are now going to be enforcing a late fee for pickups.
We do NOT provide daycare services, therefore we require all pets to be picked up within 15 minutes of completion time.
We will always notify you 30 minutes before your pet is completed or upon arrival.
Late pickups cause significant delays and disruption of our work flow, making our already busy days, chaotic. Creating more workload as we have to clean up after their messes and are liable if they do not get along with other dogs that are present in the shop, nor do we have the space to hold dogs that are no longer supposed to be in our care.
Late pickup fees are $25 for the first 20 minutes and will go up accordingly.
We also ask that you be mindful of the time and have your phone near by for the duration of your dog’s groom as this is how we stay in contact regarding your dog’s pickup times.

We respect you and your pets deeply and appreciate the same in return.

ARE YOU WORTH COMING BACK TO?

There are many reasons why dogs don’t come back when you want them to. A dog’s genetics play a big role in this when an environment is far more stimulating and exciting and listening and coming back to you disappear into the background as genetic instinct takes over.

An exciting scent or seeing something to chase can all override a response to you.

Genetics aside, a common reason why dogs don’t come back when called is because it’s not a positive experience for them.

I often cringe when I watch owners trying to get their dogs to come to them when they call.
They call and call and get increasingly angry and frustrated as their dog keeps ignoring them.

When their dog eventually does come back, or has been chased and "captured” by their owner, they get screamed at, yanked about, smacked or punished in some way for taking so long and not listening. Why would a dog want to return to someone who does this to them!

Make coming back to you worth it by always making it a rewarding experience.

Have a little patience if it takes longer than you would like, let your dog finish what they’re doing before calling them, practice in different locations and environments and never reprimand or punish them for coming back.

There is never a guarantee of a perfect recall each and every time, but making it rewarding will greatly improve the rate of success.
