This week we thinned out the apples. Looking back to two weeks ago there were 3 to 5 apple blossoms on each of the branches. After thinning them with a spray, the weakest apples have started to fall off and only the strongest fruitlets will grow. In a few weeks we will have to go through the whole orchard and hand thin the double fruit so each apple has lots of room to grow. If this step is not done properly there will be lots of apples but they will be tiny, not great quality and it is terrible for the tree (stresses the tree, branches will break from the weight of the apple bunches, no return bloom for next year) !

A new bud has been chosen for the 2020 Growing Season to document! This bud is on an Ambrosia Tree that was planted in 2013.

April 2nd, 2020
This fuzzy little bud is shifting out of dormancy into "Silver Tip" - the first stage in the growing season. Since ambrosia apples are not harvested until October and are considered a mid-fall apple their dormancy lasts a few weeks longer than most other varieties that we grow here at the Orchard.

Brant County "Tour de Farm" is back again for another year on Saturday, July 6th! Tour de farm is a wonderful learning opportunity for the whole family starting with breakfast and then a self guided tour to 4 local farms and some stops along the way exploring South-West Brant County. There will be Q&A sessions with the farmers, farm tours, day to day operation examples and education on the importance of farming in your community.
