Got a dog that loves to "help" with the chores? Instead of correcting the behaviour, teach them what you WOULD like them to do instead.
"Place" is a great versatile cue that tells your dog exactly where they should be and what they should do when the broom / vacuum /... Or even lawnmower comes out!

Just June and her lil "Boone" thing ❤️
From choosing to take loooots of space and avoiding our neutral dog at the start of our Reactivity course to practically swiping right a few weeks on! We get it, Boone does have a pretty sweet tushy!
Her parents have been doing amazing work for this little lady to help her gain confidence on leash around other dogs, and just generally giving her the best life they can! Great work all round @just_cheryl_78

Following on from the previous post - using a nose target exercise during a reactivity set up, but with our "non-working" dog!
When working with reactivity we want to manage our triggers carefully so our reactive "working" dog is able to process and learn new responses to the trigger without being overwhelmed or tipped over threshold.
For dog reactive dogs, that means working with a "neutral" dog, aka a dog that doesn't have, or can well manage, their own big feelings towards other dogs.
Autumn here, is perfect for that! Eye contact, movement and forward positioning are all challenging for reactive dogs, so we break them down and add them into the picture slowly...so for Autumn, this means hanging around, not really doing much for initial training of the other dog....which, being a Weimaraner, isn't easy either!
Nose targets are a great tool for your kit for keeping any stationary dog interested and engaged for a short period of time! (Just mix in a few treat scatters to give em a break every now and then!)

What a difference a couple of months makes! Amazing Annie doing her thing and learning other dogs are great AND we can keep our feelings calm around them!
Clip 1 was taken mid March and Clip 2 was taken at the end of May! Reactivity training is a marathon not a sprint, we still have a ways to go but look at Annie go!! Her parent's dedication and patience on her walks, at home and in class is really paying off!
Annie's parents want more for Annie than for her to just ignore dogs on walks and so using Behaviour Adjustment Training as well as counter conditioning in our Reactive RnR course, we are teaching her how to remain calm in her approach to other dogs, and how to walk away when she begins to feel overwhelmed....and isn't she a rockstar?
Interested in helping your dog's reactivity? Get in touch!
(Bonus points for anyone that can spot what may have pushed Annie over threshold in the first clip!)
(Double bonus points for anyone making it this far in the post where I feel I have to let you know that prior to barking in Clip 1, Annie was doing great at that distance!)

Recall for this one was always going to be a huge challenge but I have always been determined to do it as kindly as I can. No aversive, no, "or else" contingency.... LOTS of troubleshooting, understanding this dog and HER reinforcers, practice and management.
Gypsea loves other dogs. She loves the snow. She loves running in the snow with other dogs. With the snow, this field was actually starting to get boring for Gypsea, so I knew this recall might be hard. To help her be successful:
🐾 I didn't let her get too far from me.
🐾 I made sure to recall before the dogs got too close.
🐾 I began moving my body away as I called.
🐾 I made sure my reward was not only tasty but also delivered in a fun way ("catch!")
Start at a distance your dog can be successful, build slowly. Add a long line if you need to prevent your dog shooting off and reinforcing themselves with play.
A minute after this, (as the camera went away 🤦) she ran a further 20 ft towards the dogs....and STILL recalled for the same cheese she had just gotten.
We still aren't perfect with our off leash skills, but will get there, and we will get there with kindness.

Ah, The "shake off", of my favourite behaviours to see!
A shake off like Mr Basil is demonstrating here (not a result of wet fur) is actually a release of tension. This could be happy, excited tension (often seen after wrestling bouts between dogs), nervous tension, (seen after an uncomfortable interaction, like putting a harness on) or really just any release of intense emotion, (Gypsea had a nice big shake off on our morning walk today, after I interuppted her scenting something down).
It's a release, and damn, it just looks like it feels good to do, right Basil?

A bit of late night cat training. 😺😺
All those positive methods we use to teach our dogs tricks can be used on so many other animals too!
Here I'm using a "marker" in the form of a clicker which is just a short, sharp unique sound to pinpoint the exact moment Tilly does the correct behaviour and let her know very clearly EXACTLY what she did to earn her reward.
She loves her training and is getting pretty good with her cue discrimination 😊

He feels awesome. And so do we! (Excuse my camera skills!)
This beautiful guy barks at dogs but that doesn't necessarily mean he can't have friends, this is his second time meeting Gypsea and, look how well he handled it!
He's had a pretty tough past, three legs, missing teeth, scars from wearing a muzzle in fight rings but he still does want to make dog friends and he still loves people! We have just been working on HOW to approach those dogs so we don't get overwhelmed when we get there!
Truly an example of why we don't deserve dogs 💞
Well done Sol!
What a motley crew ❤️👌
Off leash skills, recall in particular, are REALLY hard! And there really is no magic fix - I want to instill a "turn back to Mum when I hear the magic word" as a strong habit! As strong a habit as me checking my phone when it buzzes! Habits are things we do without thinking, we just do them, because we do! And because at one point it was reinforced in us so well it stuck!
How do we build that habit in our dogs? Pay well, vary your reward, practice often and keep it fun! It's a long game, but my gosh, it's worth it!
