How's this for a visual you won't soon forgot? This is how much stomach acid a horse's body produces each day. Two standard buckets full.

Why does this matter? Your chosen feeding practices can have a direct impact on whether this stomach acid is beneficial to the horse's well-being, or not.

Horses produce saliva when they chew; the more the horse chews, the more saliva is produced. If horses have access to ad-lib forage (hay or pasture), they will produce two buckets of saliva each day. Saliva serves a few purposes in the digestion process, one of which is to help buffer stomach acid. On the other hand, horses who are fed set feedings, with imposed fasting in between, have greatly limited chew time. They can't produce this same volume of saliva.

The horse's stomach is relatively small, and only lined with a protective coating on the lower two-thirds. Excess and 'unemployed' acid can splash up onto the unprotected top third of an empty stomach, resulting in pain, ulcers, and psychological distress for the horse. Such discomfort is a common cause of aggression at feeding time.

Regardless of the amount of chew time a horse has each day, his body still produces these two buckets of stomach acid - 1.5 litres every hour, 24 hours a day. It is our responsibility as the horse's caretaker to maximize 'chew time', and feed the horse as they have evolved to eat.

What can you do to increase your horse's chew time, balancing out these buckets so-to-speak?

PS - If your horse has metabolic issues, consult with a qualified equine nutritionist to find a hay with an appropriate nutritional profile that can be consumed ad lib.

And watch how you carry those buckets!

Kids Camp at Trinity!

It’s that time of year again! Hard to believe it’s almost summer. Here at Trinity Trotters Equine we only allow so many campers per week! This ensures the utmost safety of your child & keeps the horses happy! Working in the summer heat is hard for them. Smaller classes also gives us the opportunity to have one on one time with each student and provides them with much more opportunity to learn during such a quick week. It sure does fly by!
We can’t wait to meet all the new campers, who will be joining up this summer break. We also can’t wait to see all our returning campers! The countdown is on, friends! Get ready for some horsey fun and endless memories made.

Ages:
5-16

What we offer:
- Daily teaching (horse care, grooming, basic day-to-day chores with horses)
- Horse rides
- Crafts
- Fun and learning responsibility
- A child friendly, safe environment
- A variety of horses for all riding levels

** IMPORTANT **

The farm driveway is past the house towards Appleby line, you will see our farm sign and balloons on the fence. Close the gate behind you at ALL times. This gate keeps a potential loose horse from possibly escaping. Campers also need a parent/guardian signature at drop off and pick up everyday. Do not leave your camper at the farm unless you have signed them in.

What you need to bring:
- sunscreen
- A hat
- Lunch and snacks (lots of snacks!) We are moving pretty much all day, even campers that aren't big eaters will need the extra fuel I promise!
- ASTM Certified Riding Helmet (or rent one for $25 a week)
- Riding boots. First time riders any boot with a flat 1inch heel
- Water clothes! We have a creeks and will be playing some water games
- Towel
- Extra clothing (in case they get hot/cold/wet)
- Anything white to tie-dye (no blankets or super large items)
- Water! I will have a refill station at the house but its best if they come over prepared every day to save time.
- A smile! the horses LOVE summer camp so much and there's nothing like a “happy horse crazy camper” to make each day

Bear and I are ready for registration day to come already!

I’m getting a lot of questions on how to make sure you secure your spot. Last year we filled up in less than two weeks so here is what to do.

Email [email protected] with three week options. Option 1 will be the week you want the most. Options 2 & 3 will be your back up weeks if your first option has filled up. I had a lot of parents emailing at 12am March 1st so do not be surprised if your week is full even if you email on the same day.

Once you have your spot I will email back letting you know as well as the info package for this year. Same price and layout as last year except we will be doing most things as a group instead of splitting them into two small groups. We found kids liked riding all together more & they get way more time in the saddle + on the ground with their horse. Some weeks we may split up only if it benefits everyone, just depends on the group of kiddos we have.

IMPORTANT

I will hold your spot for 24hrs and in that time payment needs to be sent to the same email or your spot will be taken by the next one in line. If paying in cash just let me know. We have two drop off locations this year, one in the orchard and the other being the farm house where I live. Once cash is dropped off text me so it is not sitting in the mailbox for long 🙂

*** I WILL SEND YOU THE PASSWORD TO USE FOR E-TRANSFER, PLEASE DO NOT MAKE YOUR OWN***

If your child has done multiple years in the past they may be eligible to volunteer, if you’re interested in that email us as well with child’s name and age 🙂

Example:

I would like to sign my child up for camp this year! Here are my options below

1. July 1-5
2. July 8-12
3. July 15-19

All proceeds go back into the farm - everyone whom works is a volunteer! We thank you all for your support and as always I cannot wait to see everyone and the horses cannot wait to be spoiled all summer 💗🐎

Here’s to the owners who are outside every couple of hours to monitor their horses’ health in these frigid temps.

Here’s to the owners who are checking waterers for ice. Here’s to the owners who are freezing their fingers to hang up their hose, or bringing hoses inside their house to keep from freezing.

Here’s to the owners switching blankets, double blanketing, or cleaning out shelters for their unblanketed horses. Here’s to the owners who are worried if their horse is staying warm enough with or without their blanket.

Here’s to the owners who are throwing countless flakes of loose hay out while making sure the round bale feeders don’t go empty.

Here’s to the owners praying that equipment starts, and hydraulics work smoothly. Here’s to the owners who figure it out when the equipment fails you.

Here’s to the messy mud room, filled with winter bibs, charged heated vests, boot dryers plugged in, and headlamps charged. Here’s to the countless pairs of gloves you have to swap out each time you venture outside.

Here’s to the rigorous training schedules, riding lessons, and busy barn coming to a halt. Here’s to putting the health of the animal’s first.

Here’s to the part of horse management that isn’t so glamorous. Thank you for all you are doing for the safety and wellbeing of your horses during this time.

Here’s to all of us ❄️🩵

Trax is a friesian percheron x looking for a rider, he is available for pb or on property lease. Trax goes around wtc on a loose rein and is loving poles, he is the perfect gentleman on trails. He would benefit from a confident rider, hes a big boy and can sometimes be a little pushy on the ground without a confident hand.

*weekly lessons are required for a confident beginner*

The difference between the needle being in the vein vs being in the artery.

“If it’s pink, better rethink. If it’s red, go ahead.”

You may wonder why we pull back into the syringe when giving injections in the vein. This picture explains why. We don't pull back to make sure we're in the vessel, we do it to make sure we're in the RIGHT vessel. Today I went to give an injection and pulled back and saw blood brighter than I wanted. I decided to go and get a new dose of sedation and once again pulled back and then gave my dose of sedation. The syringe on the left was my first injection and the syringe on the right was my second injection. Does anyone know why I shouldn't have injected that first syringe? And had I injected that first injection, what would have happened?
