***Part 2!***
I loved the practice of veterinary medicine so much that I went to the University of Guelph hoping to become a veterinarian. Sadly, I was not accepted but my sister was. My sister, Dr. Michele Bailey, had a colleague at school, Dr. Ian McLean. When Ian joined MacKay’s Animal Hospital, my sister said, “Ian was the smartest veterinarian student”.

Coincidentally, I was hired by the University of Guelph as their Manager of Purchasing Services, where I was involved in the purchase of any product or service the University needed, including the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC). At that time we owned an Airedale, who we fondly called “Airhead” due to her stubbornness and silly antics. Our Airedale became very sick and Ian referred her to OVC. I remember the head of OVC talking to me about our Airedale and him saying “when Ian refers to us, we stand up to attention as it must be a complex case”.

Now MacKay’s Animal Hospital has grown to several veterinarians, each one being as smart and kind to the animals as John and Ian.

The Shanahan pets are numerous over the years, and all treated at MacKay’s Animal Hospital: Chocolate (miniature poodle), Bronte (cat), Chinkers (Lhasa Apso) Morgan (Airedale), Nike, Mulligan & Bogie (Standard Poodles), Corduroy (Cornish Rex), Banksy (Great Dane) and Alfred (Weimaraner).

***Part 1*** MacKay’s Animal Hospital’s first clinic was in a plaza on Lakeshore Road, east of Appleby Line. When I was 16 years old, looking for a job, I noticed the clinic was being constructed and knocked on the door. John MacKay interviewed and hired me. I was MacKay’s Animal Hospital’s first employee, in 1974, 50 years ago. I worked every day after school and Saturday mornings. In the summers, I worked full time.

I was involved and exposed to everything imaginable in a veterinary clinic. Duties were unlimited, you just did what was needed to be done, from receptionist to cleaning runs to holding animals. We did not have computers, so my job was to type clients’ records on index cards using a manual typewriter in the reception. The appointment book was a physical book. On call was really on call, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

John MacKay’s love for animals was known by all his clients. He would talk to the animals like he was Dr. Dolittle. John was very physically fit, his undergrad was physical education at the University of Toronto. I recall no dog was too big for him to lift up on the table or weigh, even St. Bernards. The scales were human scales, John weighed himself and then again, holding the animal. My job was to read the scale!

John taught me how to read an animal’s emotions and discomfort. There was rarely an aggressive animal because John knew how to calm them. However, I was bit once, by a dog, … and it was John’s dog (Tristan) that bit me! John was mortified! (TO BE CONTINUED…)

Congratulations on 50 years! It must be 20 years that we have been bringing our pets to MacKay’s. So many memories with all of them, many laughs and tears have been shared with MacKay’s over the years. Thanks to all of the MacKay’s family for taking such great care of past loved ones Riley, Nanu, Buddy, Little, Bella, Lucy and our newest Stevie. Not sure how I could have done it without you guys ❤️

HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY !!

I, and my many pets, have been clients at MacKay’s since 1974 when our cat “Asti” was a patient.

Through all those years Drs. MacKay and McLean, and wonderful staff, have taken care of my pets...beginning with Asti, Duffy (Yellow Lab.), Lilly and Holly (English Bulldogs), Bear (Rotti/ Aussie Shepherd mix), Bella (Standard Poodle) and Blue (French Bulldog).
As well as taking care of my pets when they were healthy, the doctors and staff gave me support and care when the time came to make “that” ultimate decision.....when my beloved pets couldn’t tell me it was “time” to say goodbye, the doctors helped me make the kindest, most loving, decision of all.
Over the last few years, Dr. Waters has provided stellar care to Blue who has many allergies and requires monthly injections.
Blue loves seeing Dr. Waters and the tremendous staff who make such a fuss over him....lots of snuggles, pats and treats. Carey, Lynda and Leslie are our main contacts but I know there is a staff behind the scenes that provide intensive care as well and for whom I am extremely grateful.

Throughout four moves, over that 50 year time span, I have always used MacKay’s as my pets’ primary care facility. Currently, I commute from Ancaster. I put my trust and faith into this dedicated team of professionals who truly love their jobs....and I love them for that.

A huge thank you to everyone for the incredible wishes as we celebrated our 50th anniversary last week! It was a fantastic milestone, and we captured unforgettable moments with almost all of our amazing team members. A special shoutout to our wonderful clients that helped to make our week extra special. One lovely client treated us to decadent chocolate covered strawberries. Another amazing client surprised us with stunning flowers from her breathtaking garden—what thoughtful gifts!
We’ve also been delighted to receive heartwarming stories and photos from clients who have been with us for years, and we’ll keep sharing those treasures this week. Mackays Animal Hospital has been taking care of our pets since 1980- that’s 44 years ago and we have been loyal faithful clients for the entire time. From our cats, Tim and Hilary and Thomas to our dogs Jesse, Toby, Nikki, Kegger and now Buddy we have trusted the wonderful vets at MacKay’s to make sure that our pets have had the best quality and care throughout their lifetime.

From the beginning, Dr. MacKay and Dr. Ian McLean were compassionate, knowledgeable and very caring towards our pets. There was never a time when we felt that we had to go elsewhere for another opinion.They always took the time to get to know us as well as our pets and throughout the years. It was a very sad time when Dr. MacKay passed but thankfully Dr. McLean kept up with this clinic as well as maintaining the same name. The staff , vets ,front desk and RVT’s are all terrific as we have had some experience with most of them. It is also nice to see Dr. Will McLean now joining his dad in this practice and hopefully he will be carrying on the caring tradition started by his dad and Dr. MacKay. Our son and his family also use MacKay’s Animal Hospital to take care of their dogs to carry on our family tradition of using this wonderful hospital.

We have always recommended MacKay’s Animal Hospital to anyone seeking an excellent vet and will continue to do so. We wish them another 50 years of continued excellent veterinarian care in our Burlington community.
