This afternoon, before Mommy Connections Hamilton arrived, I was outside finishing a few last-minute things with Aria tucked into my puffer vest. Opal and Sterling were bouncing around in our profile bunny playground. We were having a content moment — Aria was wrapped in a blanket, resting quietly while I worked, the other buns rustling in the leaves.
Then Aria suddenly jumped.
I looked over to Opal and Sterling in the bunny playground and noticed they were both thumping — soft enough that my human ears barely caught it, but loud enough in bunny language that Aria heard it instantly from my arms. That’s when I started scanning the sky.
Three predator birds were circling overhead, each loop sinking a little lower than the last.
I wasn’t sure what to do, so I tucked Aria deeper into my vest and called Steve for backup. I moved into the bunny playground and instinctively, I stretched my arms wider to make myself look bigger. I don’t know if it made a difference — but I think it did. After a few tense minutes, the birds drifted off.
It left me thinking about how unbelievably sensitive rabbits need to be. How attuned they are to the world, how quietly they communicate danger to one another, and how fast their instincts respond.
Moments like this remind me why it’s so important that our interactions with them are calm, respectful, and consent-based. They navigate the world with ancient instincts still alive in their bodies. Honouring that feels essential here.
