Last weekend I loaded up Zoom and took her to Cochrane for our very first Extreme Cowboy Race! 🤠
What is Extreme Cowboy racing? It is a timed event where you take your horse through obstacles that replicate things you might encounter working on a ranch. The obstacles vary from roping, crossing a bridge, jumping and galloping across a field. You are asked do these obstacles with control and speed.

It was my first race, going along with the Sawatzky Equine Race Team. The whole weekend was so fun trying out this new sport. Zoom was so brave and willing to do the things that I asked. We completed all the obstacles in both of our races, something that is a big accomplishment for our first time!! This might end up being a sport I frequent as the competition was friendly, the races are fun, and I have a lovely team of people that support each other and cheer each other on. Something that is sort of foreign to me, as I typically horse show alone. But not anymore!

I’m behind on posting!! So many things have been happening this year and I cannot be more fulfilled 🥰

I’ll give you all an update on training horses-

Nori the Appaloosa is going well under saddle. We have walk/trot, with the canter being just around the corner. She is developing in to a soft, attentive horse. I am happy with her progress, and I’m sure her mom is too.

The other training horse here this month is a returning client. 12 year old Louie (was Whisper) is here for some refining work now that he has a new mom. He was here as a c**t being started under saddle 9 or so years ago! How fun to have a horse come back after so many years🐴

What a debut in the Heavy horse world! ✨
The Calgary Stampede and the Heavy Horse Show did not disappoint. The camaraderie in this world is unlike anything I have ever experienced in my show career. Everyone is willing to help, lend you an item, and support each other. Being so new in this world and a first timer at The Stampede had me a little unprepared but with the help of the Canadian Shire Horse community I was able to handle the new experience with ease. Thank you to all the folks who had a part in my success!

I rode in the all breed riding class aboard Rhea Borealis Miracle, a 3 year old Shire mare, and came out on top of the class! We had a really solid ride in the big ring, the trust and willingness this mare has is incomparable.

If anyone is looking to have their heavy horses started under saddle, I am your gal! 🤠

Dolly has gone home now, she passed school with flying colours and exceeded her moms expectations 🤩
I love the change in her over the last two months with me. Her expression is full of willingness and curiosity. She is more confident and more connected now, ready to go to work.
Enjoy your new riding partner, Megan!

There is a little bit of time left for our outdoor training season. Reach out if you’d like to book your horse in for training with us! ✨

If you have a trainer that shows up and supports you- Thank them and appreciate them!

Appreciate your trainer.

We spend way more hours at work than you could even imagine. We are here six if not seven days a week every week. We work holidays. We work weekends. And just because our office is outside and we get to be surrounded by beautiful animals the whole time does not mean we aren’t working. The barn to you is your sanctuary. It’s your escape. It’s your place to vent. Your place to relax. Your place to unwind. That is not what the barn is to us. While we have moments of serenity when everything is quiet, this is still our job. We are still on the clock. We still need to be on our game. Always.

Our job is not just riding. We deal with all of you every day. Long before and long after we have come and gone from the barn. During dinners. During drinks with friends. During family time. On days off. We are here for you.

We care. We care more than you could ever know. Each and every horse is a part of our soul. We know their mannerisms. We meticulously watch their weight, their movement, monitor what they eat and how much of it, how much they work, whether they are happy doing their job, and how to make them go in a way that pleases you without jeopardizing them. We stay up late with them if they are sick. We write down every time they batted an eyelash wrong. And we remember what they need when.

We take pride in them going well for you. We listen to every flaw you find with them, even if it is in fact your flaw, and try to help them do their job better. When you are unhappy with how they go, we take it as a personal failure, and strive to never let it happen again, even if your expectations are unreasonable. We bend over backwards to make your horse perfect, even if what you’re asking for is a horse without spirit, or personality. We stand up for them when we can, trying our best not to make you upset in the process. They are our life’s work, and we know them inside and out.

We listen to you. Whether you are rational or not. We remain calm when you bring the stress of your day job to the barn and take it all out on your horse and on us. We pick up the pieces when you’ve been unforgiving with your horse, who was simply surprised by your lack of patience after a long day. We are their rock, their shoulder to cry on, and yours.

When we go home, we still reply to your texts and your emails and your calls. We are never off the clock. We take in stride as best we can your rants of frustration when your horse or your riding isn’t exactly where you want it to be exactly when you want it. We take the blame. For you. For your horse. For the rest of your life. For everything.

And yet here we are. Still showing up. Still being here for you. For your horse. No matter how you treat us. Regardless of whether you deserve us. We are here.

Appreciate your trainer.

Current training horses 🐴 🤠

Dolly is in her second month with us and is going well under saddle with walk, trot, canter. Soon we will be venturing in to bigger spaces to ride and expanding her experiences.

New arrival is Nori! She is a four year old Appy mare here to be started. I had done some work with her when she was two to get her halter broke and some ground manners established. We are picking up where we left off and adding a whole lot more in to her toolbox.

Riding and Halter classes at the Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Show with Borealis Acres

Miracle and I walked out the winners in the all breed draft riding class 🏆 what an incredible experience to ride in such a big ring with a crowd like that!
For halter Miracle came out with a second place in 3 year old Shire mare and Sir Thomas came out with first in 2 year Shire stallion

They handled the chaos of the show ring, and looked really good showing off in the big arena. So thankful for our team, we all pulled together and made things happen.
Big huge thank you for Canadian Shire Horse Association, Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Show for putting this on and making some big dreams come true! We could not have done without the help of the fabulous people in the heavy horse world that helped us decorate and make our horses look phenomenal. Thank you to everyone who came to cheer us on, to visit and helped in any sort of way. We see you next year, The Calgary Stampede!!

We are back home and back to our normal training and lesson schedule. Reach out if you need to book anything with us!

Had so much fun at Sawatzky Equine Services “So You Wanna Race?!” Camp 🤠
It was a whirlwind experience full of emotions, horses and learning. Zoom and I tackled so many obstacles and we both experienced so many new things together. We may just be switching over to the dark side to live out our cowboy dreams.
Every participant in this camp is a superstar, and all amazing horse women. The last few days weren’t just about horses, it was about love, support and partnership 🐴

Dolly has been backed, twice now. She is gaining confidence every session and is growing in to a lovely little mare. 🐴

Eddy is learning some new things under saddle and has been a pleasure to work with. He has lots of experience and is proving to be a very solid mount. Eddy is looking for a new pasture- pm us for details.

We only have a couple spots left for the 2024 training season. Pm to chat about your riding goals and see if we are the right fit for you!

Training horses for June 🐴☀️

Dolly is a grade mare that has come here to be started. She is quite shy but is gaining confidence every day. She’s a lovely little mare and I am eager to see how she turns out as a riding horse!

Eddy is an Arabian Saddlebred gelding, here for a bit of a refresher. He has some quirks to work out on the ground but he is a lovely boy. He is broke to ride and I believe he will be available for rehoming after his time with me. DM if you would like more information on him.

Miracle is all done her time here with us, she passes school with flying colours 🌟
This mare has been an absolute delight to work with. The Shire breed from Borealis Acres is once again proving to be very trainable and gentle.
We ended our 60 days strong with her owner, and my good friend, taking her for a ride. Miracle was calm and focused even through the high winds. I couldn’t have expected any more from her.

We have a training spot that opened up for August
DM us if you’d like to claim it! 🐴

Wow! What an awesome weekend at Shadowlands Ranch Spring Show 🐴
English day was long, but we made it. The morning started with a Pleasure class, which we came out of the ring with another first place! After that was Equitation, where we ended up with a fifth place and my friend Christine walked out with the red ribbon!
It was great to see a bunch of familiar faces and watch so many riders go through all of the horse show emotions. The rain didn’t dampen our spirits as we carried on through the day and waited for our jumping rounds at the very end. I didn’t feel as good with our jumping rounds as I did with my flat classes, so we have some homework to do. But we did manage to snag a couple ribbons in the 2’9, and all of them in the 3’ earning division champion.
Overall, it was a great success and I am so pleased with my mare and our partnership at our first show of the year. 🐴🏆

What a great first day at Shadowlands Ranch showing in some western classes 🤠
We placed first in our first three classes, Pleasure, Equitation and Western Dressage! I am very proud of myself and Angel, we did our entire dressage test one handed 🤯
The afternoon was fun classes; barrels, poles, stakes and keyhole. I was surprised to have placed first in keyhole!
I got lots of compliments on Angel and how nice she is. Feels really good to see how all of our hard work this spring has paid off!

Tomorrow is English and Jumping 😃

Update on our training horses!

Miracle is nearing the end of her time here with us, I have been enjoying having her at the farm and teaching her all of the things to help her excel in her new job. Big things are going to happen for this girl!

OTTB Sweetie lives up to her name and is an absolute sweetie to work with. She is doing very well with us and has proven the gentle kind hearted nature of the Thoroughbred.

We have a few training spots left for September, October and November. If you’d like to book your horse in with us reach out now!

Pretty darn cool to see yourself up on the big screen promoting your thriving equestrian business 🤩

I went to Roxy Theatre Barrhead to watch some live music and local talent. The artist showcase was put on by WIESINGER and it was a fantastic evening! It was made extra special by having my new commercial played in the theatre, for everyone to see! It will continue to play in the theatre for the next month before each movie.

I love supporting local talent and supporting local businesses ✨✨

Who else was at the show?!

Our Story

I have lived with horses my entire life. There are a part of who I am and life just isn’t the same without them. As I am sure many of you know all too well what I am talking about. We are dedicated to our sport with the drive to always be better for our equine partner. Whether it be for competition or just to go out and enjoy riding. Here you will find a positive community all with the same goal in mind. Helping you enjoy your time with your horse.

Through my training program horses will gain confidence and strength. I truly communicate with these horses in a way that they understand so when the time comes for them to go home, the truly know what is expected of them. Understanding and communication is a big piece of the partnership. Of course you want to succeed with your horse, that is why I include lessons as part of your training experience. So you can go home and also understand the how’s and why’s of the process. The type of training I do ranges from c**t starting, western and english, to jumping training, to kid proofing, confidence building and problem solving. Additionally, I am now including rehabilitation in my program.

Coaching is one of my favorite things. I love seeing the immediate improvement in riders when I explain that one thing missing from the overall picture. Those ah-ha! moments are so rewarding. I am a CHA Certified riding coach with Western level 2, and English level 3 qualifications. Teaching from ages 5 to 65, and anywhere from your first time being on a horse, to competition level. I have a weekly lesson program with the option to use my horse or yours at our beautiful outdoor facility. I also coach within a few of the local riding clubs. You will likely see me at the local horse shows with some my students cheering them on, helping them remember their patterns, or taking videos. The lesson horses in our program are calm, gentle and safe. Everyone loves my main guy, Harley, an OTTB with an old soul, gentle eye and the best kid mode.

We have a beautiful private facility a few minutes west of Busby, AB. With a large outdoor sand arena, many colorful jumps and training obstacles, a 60’ roundpen and a new 6 stall barn. A couple times throughout the year I will be hosting clinics at home, and am always accepting training horses.
