Côte Saint-Luc Cat Trap Neuter Return Program

Côte Saint-Luc Cat Trap Neuter Return Program Trap, Neuter, Return, Maintain of Community Cats in Cote Saint Luc. The overpopulation of feral, homeless cats in our city is a huge cause for concern.

Cote Saint Luc officially launched a Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program in March 2011, to humanely trap, sterilize, and return feral cats to their original territory. TNR is proven as the most humane and cost-efficient way of controlling and decreasing the numbers of homeless cats. Councillor Mike Cohen, with Committee Chair Diane Liebling, spearhead the initiative, and along with a dedicated grou

p of volunteers run the program. Supporters include the Cote Saint Luc Animal Hospital, and the group is grateful for the financial support of the City of Cote Saint Luc. The committee maintains a hotline for residents to report feral cats in their area and works to educate the public about the importance of sterilizing cats and to inform the public about cat by-laws in Cote Saint Luc. Annual fundraising activities augment funding the committee receives to ensure the program can meet its objectives. Fundraisers have included an annual concert with the Musicians of the World Symphony Orchestra, a table at the Cote Saint Luc Mega Garage Sale in May, and and online raffle starting in September and going through to the end of November with the draw in December. Donations are always welcome, and tax receipts are available.

UPDATE:

It seems OP deleted their post which, I hope, means they thought better of rehoming a cat because the new house was ‘too small’.

And here is my daughter Emily’s cat, ‘Dwight’, who lived very happily in a studio apartment for several years.

Here’s another ‘reason’ someone wants to rehome a cat.
I don’t usually comment (anymore) on these ludicrous posts…but this one REALLY ticked me off

Fireworks can be very scary for Fluffy or Fido. Each year, 1 in 5 pets go missing worldwide due to firework displays. As we gear up for Canada Day celebrations – don’t forget to keep our furry friends in mind.

Here are a few tips to keep them safe and calm:

1. Stay Indoors: Keep pets inside to prevent them from running away out of fear. Never allow pets near fireworks if staying indoors is not an option.

2. Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, cozy area where they can retreat.

3. Distractions Help: Play soothing music or turn on the TV to mask the noise.

4. Comfort and Reassure: Stay close and offer comfort if they seem anxious.

5. Update Information. Ensure that your pet’s microchip information is current and that they are wearing a collar with your contact info. If they do get spooked and run off this will help them get home faster.

‘Nala’ has gone back to her refuge and they will find her a new loving, permanent, and SAFE home.

Hello All:

PLEASE: if you love your pets, you will get them microchipped.

This cat went missing literally ONE day after she was adopted and, although the refuge tried everything in their power to find her, they were unsuccessful.

This was over a year ago! ONE FULL YEAR.
(she was adopted on June 9, 2024 and went missing on June 10, 2024.)

I have no idea how she survived for the last year but she did.

Perhaps she found her way to our library and was eating at our feeding station there and we did not notice her.

One of our Cote St. Luc residents (thank you Bernice!) started to notice her off and on through the winter, but she did not appear consistently.

When she started to show up more often, Bernice started to feed her routinely.

Last week she started ‘trap training’ her and last night she set the trap.

I mean, who doesn’t want to get up at 3 AM in the morning to bring a trap inside with a cat in it ?! (Cameras help).

She was brought to the vet this morning and found to be microchipped.
Only through microchipping were we able to quickly find the rescue where she came from.

She will be picked up by them on Wednesday.

Her name is Nala and she is one lucky cat.

Doing my little happy dance!

Please: microchip your pets.

Diane

Can we talk about indoor/outdoor cats?

We’ve had so many calls this week with lovely people hoping to adopt our cats and kittens and we’re genuinely surprised by how many people still believe cats must have outdoor access, even in areas right beside busy roads.

The truth is: 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲-𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘀.

Your cat doesn’t need "freedom" if it comes with a daily risk of injury or death. What they do need is safety, stimulation, and love.

💡 Safer solutions:
– Cat-proof fencing (like ProtectaPet)
– Catios or enclosed balconies
– Indoor-only life enriched with toys, play and other feline companions
– Supervised garden time or harness walks

It’s time to shift the mindset —
Indoor cats aren’t deprived, they’re protected!

Before adopting, please take a moment to consider if your home and area can offer a safe life for your cat. Not sure? We're always happy to help talk through options 💛

This post is not meant to judge anyone — we just want all our cats to be loved, safe, and stimulated. But safety is non-negotiable!

Update:
Cote St. Luc has moved July 1 celebrations to July 2 because of rain in the forecast tomorrow.

Here is a schedule of events.

July 1 is rapidly approaching and while it is, for many, Canada Day, it is also ‘national cat abandonment day’.
This is especially true in Montreal, where the lack of affordable housing, coupled with the unwillingness of landlords to accept even one or two neutered cats, has made it increasingly impossible for people to keep their pets.
While it may not be feasible for you to adopt a cat at this time, please consider fostering. In most cases, the rescue will supply food (although if you can supply it yourself, it is very much appreciated!) and veterinary care is covered.
Here is one rescue that needs your help, but literally every rescue is in need.
Thx
Diane
