Graphic content warning ‼️ A cool case featuring how this horse’s body reacted to physical trauma.

This guy suffered a kick to the chest by a pasture mate leading to an accumulation of serosanguineous fluid called a seroma. It was monitored over several days because often they will reabsorb on their own, but if not, draining is the next step to speed up the healing process. Dr. Kalteis did just this, first poked with a needle to determine what fluid we were dealing with and then went ahead, expanded the incisions and left a drain in to encourage drainage over the next week.

Never a dull moment when working with horses 🐴

Your horse has just been vaccinated. What can you expect? 💉 Swipe right to learn more!

Vaccines are very familiar to horse owners, but vaccine reactions can sometimes be unknown territory. The expected symptoms post vaccination are very similar to how you might have felt after a COVID vaccine.

If there are any concerns, don’t hesitate to give the office a call 📞 They will be happy to answer any questions.

This is not the Spring that Waffles asked for ❄️ It may not feel like it but it’s that time a year again which means it’s time to book in your horse’s routine Spring appointment!

What does a routine Spring appointment usually look like?

* Vaccinations💉 - this can look a little different for every horse and often split up between a couple appointments.

* Dental check 🦷- if your horse is on a yearly Spring dental program or if it was suggested in the Fall to get a 6 month recheck this is the opportunity!

* Routine health check 🩺👀

* And more - these Spring appointments are a great time to discuss deworming strategies, recheck bloodwork, and express any concerns you may have.

Spring is a VERY busy time for us at Ferguson Equine so booking early will ensure we can accommodate your scheduling needs to the best of our ability! Call the clinic at 519-941-9111 or send an email to [email protected] to get your appointment booked 🗓️

A wonderful afternoon spent with some of the Boehringer Ingelheim team at our clinic discussing equine gastric and joint health🩺🩻

Dr. Ferguson performed gastroscopes on 3 different horses to provide visuals of the different kinds of gastric ulcers that horses can develop while Dr. Cloutier gave insight on the anatomy, causes and prevention measures. Followed by a presentation on joint health that answered a lot of frequently asked questions on treatment options for osteoarthritis in horses 🐴

Thank you to all that were able to attend! We hope to do more events like this in the future with more great conversation, great food and great horse people☺️

A couple weeks late but next up, let’s reintroduce Dr. Kalteis ! 👩🏼‍⚕️

Dr. Kalteis graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2017 and then completed a year long equine internship at OVC! In 2018, she joined the FEVS team with a focus on sports medicine bringing warmth and attention to all her equine patients. February is National Pet Dental Health Month. While horses don’t exactly qualify as pets, this is still a good opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of having a veterinarian check your horse’s teeth at least once a year.

Following is some important food for thought (pun intended) courtesy of AAEP member Dr. Christine Staten:

“Did you know that horses don’t really need their incisors to eat? Yep, even pasture. But if their incisors are a mess, it affects their ability to appropriately grind their food with their molars and pre-molars.

Dental work in horses is not just about floating teeth to get off points. It’s about balancing the mouth so that they can get the most nutrition out of their food without pain.

Shearing hay in the mouth is necessary to get the nutrition out. The guy in the picture was skinny because he could not move his jaw laterally enough to shear his food, but his health and body condition score improved significantly once the incisors were balanced.”

When was the last time you had your horse’s teeth checked?

The first foal of the clinic arrived last night and it’s safe to say we were all very excited to welcome her! Congratulations to the owners of this beautiful healthy filly🐴

Also, how lucky are we that for a February baby the weather was mild enough for a little bit of outside time? With her little blanket of course 🥰

Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Kalteis had a busy Tuesday! They got though dental exams on a large group of two year old thoroughbreds which meant for lots of wolf teeth removals and even some cap removals! 🐴

This picture does a great job showing off how wolf teeth can come in slightly different shapes and sizes. We love dental day!🦷

With all our new clients and followers we thought it would be a good idea to reintroduce our veterinarians starting with the one and only Dr. Ferguson! 🥼🐴

Dr. Ferguson, a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College, began working at a practice that focused on sports medicine and reproduction. He spent time in Texas, at an embryo transfer farm, and completing the Embryo Transfer program at Colorado State University where he developed a keen interest in equine reproduction. Equally as passionate with sports medicine, Dr. Ferguson continues to bring cutting edge technology to our clients. He opened his first practice, Ferguson Equine Veterinary Services, in 2013 and continued to expand when building the gorgeous facility we have now in 2017. When Dr. Ferguson is not practicing, you can find him playing golf, skiing or spending time with his family🏌️‍♂️⛷️

Our Story

Dr. Ferguson is a 2006 graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College. He began is career working for a local practice specializing in sports medicine and reproduction. After 5 years, he decided to leave and start his own practice in 2012. Since then Ferguson Equine has grown rapidly, with a strong focus on sports medicine, reproduction and routine health management. Our clinic offers primarily mobile services, along with in house reproductive services (Frozen Semen, broodmare care and supportive care for colics and intensive cases).

Our clinic offers in-house laboratory services, frozen semen storage, and regenerative medicine such as PrP and stem cell therapy.

Dr. Ferguson has a great support team! Kelly Flesch runs the office and also monitors the horses in the clinic. Sarah Ball is on the road with Dr. Ferguson 5 days a week and Carey Ferguson takes care of administrative matters.
