Clover wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

I haven’t posted a lot recently because we haven’t been up to much training. In the new year Clover and I will be back to working together more. I’m looking forward to sharing more about our journey.

Wishing everyone a safe holiday season!

Clover and I recently got back from a very long road trip. We drove 30+ hours each way! I cannot tell you how proud I am of Clover 🙌 she rocked the trip. She slept while driving on her bed in the back seat. She had lots of adventures while in the road. We saw so much novelty for her. I made sure that she down time throughout the trip as necessary. For the next few days we will work on emptying Clovers bucket.

What’s a dog bucket? The simple answer is that it’s whatever the dog experiences good or bad. While our trip was mostly filled with good experiences for Clover, it still filled her bucket. To empty her bucket Clover will get lots of rest time, kongs, lickie mats, and calm games. We will also keep our walks short and to bathroom breaks only while she empties her bucket.

Have questions about the bucket? Feel free to contact me for a consultation 😁

I am so excited to be doing the work with dogs challenge. It started earlier this week and I am learning so much already! One thing they suggested doing was writing down your powerful why. This is the reason why I am doing this challenge. This is my powerful why: I want to be the very best owner for Clover and any other future dogs I have. I also would like to become a dog trainer and help other people and their dogs with their struggles. I have seen such great success with games based training with Clover that I want to share with everyone!! My dream would be to have this as my full time job. So I took the step and turn one day into day one 🤩 I’m excited to see where this journey takes me!

I think I broke my dog! 🤣 We have been working on boundaries for awhile, almost a year now. This is the first time Clover has ever been so calm on her boundary that she didn’t feel the need to come to bathroom with me 😱 I always have a guest in the bathroom..... so proud of her progress!

I haven’t done much recording of the sexier than a squirrel games recently. But we are playing! Today while out walking we were playing magic hand. This is great game for heeling and focus. It’s one of Clovers favourite games! Today we were walking on a pathway playing it and other dogs started barking at her. Well instead of running towards them joining in the barking she choose ME!!! It’s the best feeling when they choose you over the other distraction in the environment. This is the power of games!!

Day six: the squirrels secret weapon. This game is all about play! We love to play! Clovers favourite game is tug. She does struggle to play outside as it can be distracting with so many other things going. I was very happy when she close to play tug with me ☺️ inside we play lots!!

I picked up a toppl for Clover at the pet store. I stuffed it with a bit of wet food veggies, blueberries, and a bit of chicken. This kept her occupied for a good amount of time on her bed. I didn’t freeze it this time as it was a new toy and wanted her to be successful with it. Next time I will freeze it for her so it lasts longer 😁 it’s safe to say she enjoyed it!

Day five: happiness 😁

The suggested game for today is leg weaves. This is something we are still working on. It is definitely not Clovers happy movement 😂 and it’s really hard to do using a long line as we both tangled up 😬 so we will try to get that on video but inside. But, her absolute favourite thing to do is jump!!! We jump together all the time when celebrating a win 🥳

Day four: room dash!

We did a catch up this weekend between rain storms on some games outside. This was a particular distracting day for Clover as there were a couple other dogs near by. She did great keeping her focus on me for the most part 🙌 only getting distracted and starring few times. Room dash is probably clover favourite game to play inside. It was also her first game when we did sexier than a squirrel last year that I saw so much more animation from her. She loves the chase!!

04/28/2021

Day three: orientation game

This is a favourite of Clovers and we often use it as a warm up to get her ready for other games. It’s easy to do throw food and wait for them turn back and say yes, repeat!

Day two of sexier than a squirrel challenge 2.0. Last year when we played this game Clover just lied down.... yup my dog chose to lie down and stare at me instead of try to chase me. I was so disappointed that she didn’t look like the dogs in the videos. I wasn’t sure that this training method was going to work. I’m glad I didn’t give up. Look at her now! She’s a rock star 🤩

Are you sexier than a squirrel to your dog? How about a rabbit? Rabbits are what Clover loves to chase. And they are EVERYWHERE where we live. She thinks they are pretty sexy.

Last year the sexier than a squirrel challenge was where we started with training with absolute dogs. We loved all the games!! And since we have jumped on to soooo much more. I have started to sexier than those rabbits 🐇 🤣 we are very excited to start the sexier than a squirrel challenge 2.0 on Monday 🤩 looking forward to learning lots more!

We have been focusing more on calm inside lately. Clover has been a little too excited being inside and wants to run around all the time. One of her favourite calming activities is her licki mat. I typically put some wet food on there and freeze it which makes it last longer. It always makes clover much calmer after having one. She also like to lay down and lick and moves it around to her favourite place to lay 😊

Happy 🐾 Clover is in her boundary while I eat my breakfast. This is a huge improvement for her. I used to not be able to eat anything in peace with her not in a kennel. They’re still not perfect but we are getting there. The hardest boundary for her right now is the kitchen boundary. She always wants to see what I’m doing and if I have food for her. We will get there 🙌

This morning I put Clovers off leash freedom skills to the test. We went on a walk on Nosehill park. The park is not fully fenced and there is wildlife like deer and coyotes. Clover did amazing 🤩 she stayed close by and listened very well. This has been a dream of mine. It took us almost a year to get to this point. Do you dream of having off leash freedom with your dog? Message or drop a comment below and we can get started 🐾

Every morning we are up early for Clover to have her medication. After her medication we went out for an hour long sniffing walk. Sniffing is such a great brain workout for dogs. The rest of the morning she has been sleeping in many different spots 🤣

wanted us to try something new. Today we added A gate around Clover’s kennel and are practicing presence doesn’t mean access. Just because she can see me does me she needs to be with me. We both need our time and space 🐾🍀😊

Doing some boundary training with Clover in her kennel. We are working on her release cue “break”. After I say her cue I throw a piece of chicken out. Then she should come back to her boundary and then I reward her for making a good choice. Watch to ended and you’ll se how Clover tried to reward herself for going into the kennel 🤣

What a great weekend for Clover! She’s more adjusted to her meds now which means she is more balanced and her hunger isn’t as bad as it was.

Saturday we had agility class and did a good job doing weaves for the first time. After class I had some errands to run so Clover came with me in the car. She was well behaved and errand herself a puppucinno!

Sunday was a great day! It was so warm out. She had a good nap! We went out to the park to work on some training with her long line. She did amazing! Her focus was on me the whole time! I would have been comfortable having her completely off leash. We played lots of games like orientation, proximity vortex, and magic hand. I’m so proud of how well she is doing!

Clover has recently started on seizure medication. Right now she is a little wobbly and has a bit of trouble balancing. We haven’t been doing too much training while she’s getting used to her new meds. We have been focusing on calm. I make sure she spends part of her day resting. Calm is so important because a calm dog will make good choices. In this picture we are waiting for agility class to start. The car is a great place to work on calm. Our first class since November.

I was a bit nervous taking her to agility class today. I talked to the instructor and we set her up for success. We lowered the jumps from and she had help on the teeter. She had a successful first day back to agility! 🥳

Doing some boundary training on Clovers new bed 😊 right now we are working on making sure she loves to be on and stay on the bed. We played some calm games and I even tested her a bit with my snacks on the floor. She did great at staying on her boundary even though the cheese and carrots where very tempting to her 😉

I was excited that Clover’s raised bed came today! She took to it right away. This is great for boundary training. And will hopefully last longer than her other beds 😂 she has almost worn out another bed because of all her digging to comfy.

I got Clover a cone yesterday as she started to have a runny eye and was scratching it a lot. I was worried that she would hate it as I haven’t used one before. But with magical power of games she had no problem wearing the cone. Building her optimism through games has helped this stressful situation be less stressful. Thanks to the cone game! This is a game where Clover sticks her head into a cone shape object. We use a yogurt container. She gets rewarded each time she does this. We will try to record this great game once Clover is feeling better. It’s also great for muzzle training. We are working on that just in case she ever needs to wear a muzzle.

I haven’t shared this on this page yet. Clover has seizures. Last night she had a seizure after being 5 months seizure free. It’s always hard to watch her go through one.

Last week during the webinar for the Naughty but Nice something struck me. Tom Mitchell said you’re the best owner your dog could ever hope for. It hit me yesterday when Clover had her seizure last night after being 5 months seizure free. People always comment on how she’s in the right place now. I always brushed it off as nothing because I don’t really like thinking I’m some great super hero. What I realized yersterday is that I really am the best owner she could hope for. Her seizures were the reason she was surrendered in the first place. Her pervious owners took her to vet to be euthanized when they started, but the vet convinced them to surrender her instead. I have taken her on knowing about the possibility of seizures. There was something that I felt inside before I even adopted her that told me she was meant to be with me. I am continuing to learn to give her the best possible life. We practice calm daily, making sure she has plenty of time to rest. I have enjoyed our journey so far and we are looking forward to the Naughty by Nice bootcamp!
