You know how you stay at the top of your game by engaging in professional development opportunities like webinars, conferences, podcasts, and readings?

A service dog has to do the same… kinda. While these incredibly well trained dogs don’t tune into the latest podcast episode on how to be the best service dog, they do rely heavily on a team of skilled trainers and their handler to maintain their skills. Being a service dog requires the dog to navigate such a unique set of complex challenges that are dynamic and fluid and just downright difficult. Not only might their handlers needs may shift during their time together as a working team, but when it comes down to it, our working canines are just that… canines. They are sentient beings with thoughts, feelings, and individual motivators and would be silly to expect these canines to be able to navigate these challenges on their own. Part of being a service dog handler is to learn to coach your dog through these situations - and that’s where we come in! As service dog trainers not only do we teach our clients how to coach their dogs throughout their working life to help adapt to new challenges, we are required by the government to provide routine check ins to properly assist our teams in navigating the distinctly unique challenges of being a service dog team!

All this is to say, we have such respect and admiration for the dedication of service dog handlers who have the unique bond and relationship with their dog where they rely heavily on their dog to them with provide safety and independence but also provide their dog with the coaching, training, and support to navigate the complex world of being a service dog!

Cheers to our service dog teams!

When it comes to recall training, two common tools often spark debate: e-collars and longlines. Both methods have their pros and cons, and choosing the right one depends on your dog’s unique needs, training goals, and personal preferences. While longlines offer a more hands-on approach, allowing gradual freedom, e-collars provide off-leash control without physical restrictions. Let’s explore the benefits and drawbacks of each option to help you make an informed decision for you and your canine.

E-COLLARS
🗣Pros:
💥Effective for long-distance recall: Maintains communication at a distance far beyond what a leash or voice can reach.
💥Virtually hands-free: Allows you to recall your dog without managing a long line.
💥Allows full off-leash freedom: Dogs can run without movement restrictions, which is especially fulfilling for long-range breeds.

🗣Cons:
💥Must fit correctly: collars must be snug and positioned correctly on the neck to make contact.
💥Risk of misuse: Incorrect introduction and use can cause fear or confusion.
💥Requires charging: Must be charged regularly, or it becomes unreliable.

LONGLINES
🗣Pros:
💥Customizable management: Can be held or dragged behind the dog, depending on the environment and level of control required.
💥Provides some freedom: Allows the dog more freedom while gradually working towards full off-leash behavior.
💥Provides physical security: Prevents the dog from running into unsafe situations.

🗣Cons:
💥Inhibits full movement: Dogs can trip over the line or hit the end, interrupting their natural movement.
💥Cumbersome leash handling: Managing the line can be difficult and leaves your hands full.
💥Limited range: Only works within the leash’s length, restricting recall practice in larger areas.

Either way, reliable recall often—dare I say, always—requires a tool. Your tool might be a long line, e-collar, toys, or food. But we all use tools to reinforce and manage our dog's recall in some way. What's your tool of choice to reinforce your recall?

🚩Your service dog trainers' education is probably lacking this critical component...

🐕‍🦺For decades, service dogs could only come from organizations that bred and trained service dogs for their clients. These well-established breeding programs were able to produce a high quantity of quality service dog candidates thanks to decades of selective breeding. This meant the dogs trainers were working with rarely had any behavioral concerns, and if concerns arose, because of the volume of dogs the program was able to breed, washing a dog was a relatively easy choice because there were plenty of other, more suitable candidates.

🚫The luxury of washing dogs with even slight undesirable behavior is often not an option if you're one of Alberta’s owner-trained service dog teams, where individuals may train a dog of their choosing completely themselves or with the support of a trainer. May owner-trainers simply cannot wash dogs from training and replace it with one free of challenges.

➡️This shift from organization-bred and trained dogs to owner-trained service dogs has left a massive gap in our industry because some trainers are ill-equipped to coach their clients through typical behavioral challenges that many dogs frequently experience.

💥I'm not talking about massive concerns such as aggression-based reactivity; instead, what we're talking about are normal adolescent dog behaviors like leash frustration, demand barking, and impulse control. Trainers who have only had their hands on dogs from beautifully pedigreed service dog lines are NOT equipped to support these behaviors and must often refer owner-trained clients out to other trainers who can support behavior challenges, before service dog training can resume.

When considering where to train your dog, ask the hard questions: “What will we do if behavior concerns arise?” “How will my dog's needs change as they reach sexual and social maturity?” and “How will you support me through these possible challenges?”

Halloween is just around the corner! Here are some valuable tips to ensure the safety of your canines next week.

1️⃣Costume Comfort: While dressing up our pups can be adorable, prioritize their comfort and safety. Make sure the costume doesn't restrict their movement, breathing, or vision. Avoid any small parts that could be chewed or swallowed, and always supervise them while they're in costume.

2️⃣Candy Caution: Halloween treats are a big no-no for our canines. Chocolate, candies, and gum containing xylitol can be toxic to dogs. Keep all Halloween goodies out of their reach, and remind your family and friends not to share any treats with your pup.

3️⃣Décor Dangers: Spooky decorations can be enticing for curious dogs, but they can also pose risks. Keep an eye out for open flames, such as candles in jack-o'-lanterns, as they can cause burns or fires if knocked over. And, be cautious with fake cobwebs, as they can be harmful if ingested.

4️⃣Doorbell Distress: Frequent doorbell ringing and strangers in costumes can be stressful for our dogs. Consider creating a safe and quiet space away from the front door. Provide them with their favorite toys, a cozy bed, and some soothing background noise to help them relax.

5️⃣Escape Prevention: With the constant opening and closing of doors during trick-or-treating, there's a higher risk of dogs escaping. Ensure your dog has proper identification, such as a collar with tags or a microchip, in case they do manage to slip away. Keep them securely leashed or confined in a separate room during peak trick-or-treating hours.

6️⃣Noise and Light Sensitivity: Halloween can bring about loud noises and bright lights, which may distress some dogs. If yours is sensitive to these stimuli, consider using white noise machines or calming music to drown out the noise. Dimming the lights or using blackout curtains can also help create a more peaceful environment.

By following these tips, we can ensure a stress-free and enjoyable holiday for our canines. Happy Howlween!

If you're a dedicated service dog handler looking to transform your dog into a confident service dog with the skills to pass the Alberta Public Access Assessment and support you or a loved one in day to day life, you just found the expert guidance and support you've been searching for.

Here’s what we’re all about:
As a service dog trainer, I started this journey to create a more accessible world. Frustrated with the service dog industry’s “one size fits all” approach, I launched our tailor-made service dog program. My goal? To guide young dogs through adolescence into adulthood, teaching them the essential skills needed to thrive as service dogs.

Our method is process-driven and we follow a systematic approach to thoughtfully tackle the non-negotiables of service dog training—advanced tasks, public manners, and more—ensuring your dog is fully prepared for the responsibilities ahead.

In our community, we believe in flexibility and real-time feedback. And through private sessions, group training, and online coaching, we’re here to provide you with customized advice and continuous support, no waiting necessary.

Join us and take the next step in training your service dog with confidence and success.

When it comes to dog training, the way we communicate with our dogs makes all the difference! 🐾 You may have heard the phrase “communication is kindness,” but what does that really mean? It’s simple: the more clear we are in telling our dogs what we want, the less confused they’ll be! This leads to tidy skills and a dog that responds to your cues every time—on the first cue! 🎉

Now enter “markers”! A marker is a sound we make that tells our dog, “You just did the right thing; reinforcement is on the way!” And as we know, our dogs are always on the lookout for those rewards, whether it’s playtime, treats, or their favorite toys—all things markers can predict!

So should we be using multiple reward markers or stick to just one? Each approach has its own unique advantages, and understanding the differences can help you choose the best method for your pup.

Multiple Reward Markers:
1. Nuanced Communication: Different markers can convey different results, helping the dog understand exactly what they did right and how they can access their reinforcement.
2. Enhanced Motivation: A variety of markers can keep training exciting and engaging, as each marker changes how, where, and what reinforcement is awarded.
3. Gradual Shaping: Multiple markers can facilitate more complex training by marking approximations of a desired behavior.

One Reward Marker:
1. Simplicity: Having a single marker keeps things straightforward for both the handler and the dog, reducing potential errors.
2. Ease of Use: Training becomes less complicated for handlers, making it easier to focus on the behavior being reinforced without juggling multiple cues.
3. Clear Consistency: One marker ensures that the dog associates it with the same reward every time, solidifying the connection between behavior and reinforcement.

So, what do you prefer to use with your dog?
