Room vs. Crate: Which is Best for Your Dog When You’re Not Around? 🐾
When it comes to keeping your dog safe and comfortable while you’re away or sleeping, two popular options are a dedicated mud/dog room or a crate. Both have a place in proper dog training, but have you considered how to utilize them effectively?
Confined to a Room
In a room, your dog has more space to move around—maybe even with their crate included, giving them the autonomy to choose where they’d like to rest. However, with more freedom comes more opportunity for poor choices, like chewing unsafe items, scratching doors, or getting into mischief. This level of freedom is best reserved for mature dogs who have earned trust over time. While useful as a way to confine our dogs sometimes, a room should never replace the crate as your dog’s primary safe space.
Confined to a Crate
Crating provides a secure and cozy den-like space where your dog can relax without distractions. It prevents accidents or injuries and fosters a resilient dog who doesn’t experience FOMO (fear of missing out) because they value structured rest time. A crate offers unmatched safety and promotes calm, confident behavior.
While giving your dog a room might work occasionally, crates offer critical benefits for safety and well-being. A crate should become your dog’s happy place—a peaceful spot where they rest undisturbed.
Ultimately, we think both have value but a room should never replace your dogs crate and its essential to stay on top of their crate training to ensure they are always comfortable resting in a crate when you need them to.
