A great morning with Sophie from Partner in Paws Training. Thanks to everyone who showed up for our event on Saturday. Both dogs and handlers learned a few tricks on how to make a visit to the vet less stressful.

There were plenty of treats for everyone, and congratulations to Angela, who won the door prize!

Happy National to my number one partner.

It’s crazy to think that after overcoming her own concerns with reactivity, she is now helping my clients do the same.

The connection that you have with your is unspeakable. Often we are able to communicate without words.

I can only hope that we have many more healthy years together.

Cheers to all our sweet sweet black dogs out there 🥂 🐾

I have a dog tolerant and dog selective dog. What type of sociability is your dog?

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
It may be really disappointing and frustrating when our dogs are not the social beings we expected them to be.

Many believe dogs should just naturally get along with other dogs, after all they’re the same species.

Some believe the “unsociable” dog has a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”.

Early, appropriately timed and correct socialisation is vitally important, but sometimes despite all of this, some dogs are just not that sociable.

Sometimes this can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance and sociability, which also change throughout life.

If we, as a human species, don’t get along with everyone we meet, how can we expect our dogs to?

Do we label every person that has an argument, doesn’t make friends with everyone they meet, doesn’t like every other person, prefers not to socialise - as having a problem that needs to be fixed?

Why is it so easy to accept that every individual person is different than to accept that every individual dog is different?

When we have done what we can to improve our dogs’ social skills, we need to accept and acknowledge our dogs for the individuals they are, allow and respect their choice of whether to be sociable or not and never force interactions that a dog is not comfortable with.

📣 Share this with ALL your dog mom friends!

Start preparing them for the Canada Day or 4th of July Weekend 💥

1️⃣ Desensitization - Ideally, we want our dogs to pay very little mind to the boom boom sounds in the sky. De-sensitizing them by playing firework sounds at low volumes will help them become accustomed.

💥Tip, give them something to lick or chew whilst listening to the cracks to encourage good feelings.

2️⃣ There are many natural remedies to ease stress for our dogs.

💥Each dog is different, so it’s trial and error is required but natural calming supports are always a great option!

3️⃣ Dogs that are outside often get spooked and run at the sound of fireworks. When a dog is in a panic, they will jump high fences that typically would keep them secure.

💥Make sure your dog is inside your house. Even if your dog is not afraid of fireworks, it only takes one poor experience to trigger a noise phobia.

⭐️Note, if your dog is panting incessantly, shaking, hiding, unable to recover after the loud booms are finished- CONSULT YOUR VET.

💊 Medications can be super helpful for dogs that panic during fireworks or thunderstorms

Enjoy your holiday, knowing that your dog safe and as comfortable as possible!

Well, after years of documenting 300+ hours of working with dogs and their humans; I finally got to sit for my Certified Profession Dog Trainer Exam last month.

This test challenged my knowledge related to the following topics:
Applied Learning Theory
Canine Behaviour, Ethology and Well-Being
Professional Skills, Ethics and Laws
Instructional and Teaching Skills

Due to the lack of an elected governing body, The importance of finding a professional with accreditations and certifications in the dog training field is crucial.

Not only do accreditations display knowledge within the field, they also hold trainers to a different standard of ethics.

In order to continue holding this designation, I must complete a certain amount of learning hours to continue my growth as a trainer. - which will help me bring more success for my clients because I have more tools in my tool box!

My hard work has finally paid off and I wanted to share my new achievement!

This is a great example of behaviour law at its finest. I had taught Lyla to put her paws up onto a variety of items a while ago, one of which include this stool. I now have the stool close by as I am vertically challenged and often need it to get things from my new kitchen.

As I was cooking this evening, I turned around and saw Lyla had perched herself, without being cued and was waiting for a cookie. She actually stood up there for a good two minutes looking at me as I was giggling at her.
This is a real life example of the number one rule of dog training: Behaviours that are rewarded are repeated.
Btw she did get a cookie. 🤣

Since it’s I thought I’d share my story of how I found my girl. I didn’t have a dog as a child (I asked about 8,000,005 times) but I did have a few wonderful family dogs that had touched my heart. I knew I wanted to have a or a of some type. So I had been perusing the adoption sites for weeks, when I came across this sweet little black ball of fur on the Sundance Canine Rescue page. I emailed them right away inquiring as to when I could come and meet her. They got back to me the following day and we made a date. They also told me that she was the last puppy left out of her litter and multiple people had come to see her, but didn’t take her home. I thought this was INCREDIBLY odd. Meeting day came and I was bursting with excitement! I drove all the way down to Edmonton just to see her! She was even cuter in person! Her puppy fur was hilarious. Her whole body was full of long poofy hair except her bare little tail! The fosters allowed us to go out on a small walk where we played in the grass together. She had a very gentle and calm demeanour. Just before I was about to leave, she confirmed that she was supposed to be with me. She sat her bum on my feet and looked up into my eyes. I then thought “She’s my girl.”🥰She wasn’t quite ready yet for adoption, so sadly I had to leave her with her foster home that day. About a week later, the Foster and I met in Red Deer and I had my new best friend. I brought her inside my parent’s house and I laid down on the floor. She jumped all over me and showered me in kisses. That is still something we both enjoy today. I will never know why she wasn’t picked by those other families. Was it because she was ? I like to think the universe knew we were meant be. Or maybe she was misbehaved with the other families because she knew she wasn’t for them. We have had countless adventures together since, with lots of learning and love. I hope to make so many more memories with you by my side. Happy you day to my Lyla bear and Happy to all the amazing dogs. 🐾💕

We’ve spent most of the summer sharing our yard with the neighbourhood bunnies. Almost every time we go out for a walk, one is hanging out on our lawn. 🐰
Initially, my first thought was “Ugh, what a pain” 😒 but it’s actually strengthened their abilities to co exist with them.
The Predatory Sequence is as follows: Orient, Stalk, Creep, Chase, Grab bite, Kill bite, Possess, Disect and Consume. Many canines don’t actually engage in the full predatory sequence because of selective breeding and domestication. Each dogs predatory sequence may look a little different. Some dogs, including my own, if left to their own devices would engage in the first 5 sections of the sequence. They have both had opportunities to kill and consume small prey such as mice, but they are more interested in stalking and chasing them. I am personally fine with my dogs mousing when in wooded areas as they are able to drop prey out of their mouth when asked, and generally don’t make much attempt to consume.

With rabbits and squirrels though, I don’t want them chasing or grabbing them, therefore I provide an an outlet for the chase portion of the prey sequence (throwing the treat) after they have eyed the bunny and they get to munch down on the treat. This actually strengthens the behaviour of the orientation and stalking. Allowing our dogs to perform certain parts of the predatory sequence will be inherently reinforcing. The more they practice the orient and stalk, the more it is reinforced which means you will see more of it.

Since rabbits and squirrels are everywhere in my neighbourhood, I personally much prefer Chessi and Lyla to stalk with their eyes, rather than actively chase them and pull me down in the process.
