I am a breeder. I spend a lifetime learning pedigrees, going over dogs, talking, and learning from those in my breed and those outside it. I raise each litter as if I gave birth to them and spend an equal amount of time finding them loving forever homes. I strive to only put puppies on this planet that I think will be the healthiest (mentally and physically) and nicest examples of their breed. I support each family who chose one of my puppies and let them know they are now a part of our extended family. I am there if one needs to come back. I support my breed in rescue and education. I hold them when they arrive and leave this world. I share my knowledge and socialize my dogs so that they will be the advertisement for my dedication. I don't keep track of the money and time I put in to my love of dogs, it would not be a true measure of how I feel. The price I charge for my puppies is never profit, but investment in the next generation. I am not ashamed of who I am... I work hard at being a good dog person and encouraging others to be the same. I am a breeder and I am proud of it. If we don't support each other - we are doomed as a fancy. Copy and post if you agree.

THIS!šŸ‘šŸ‘

Why does a purebred puppy from a reputable club breeder cost so much?

1. Health Testing on Sire and Dam
2. Routine Veterinary Care
3. Breeding Costs. Progesterone Testing, Stud Fees, Brucellosis Testing, Travel to and from. TCI, Frozen Semen, Chilled Semen, Shipped Semen
4. Quality Puppy Food and Supplements
5. Whelping Supplies (boxes, pens, toys, expendables, supplements, other containment)
6. Vet Checks for Puppies, Vaccines, Dewormers, Microchips
7. AKC registration and Microchip Registration
8. My time. It takes about a week of my time arranging the breeding and to raise the puppies until 8 weeks that is a minimum of 1500 hours of work and effort.
9. Puppy kits, printed materials, and health information.
10. My time spent educating owners and continuing to give advice for the life of the dog.

I wonā€™t include the club memberships, championships, travel to shows, advertising, hundreds of hours of time spent promoting purebred dogs. I wonā€™t include missed vacations, sleepless nights, very high repro vet bills, missed breedings, c sections, singletons, or bad luck. All expensive and we do it for no other reason than to preserve our breeds.

If I hear another person say they are just looking for a pet and not a showdog then my advice to them is go ahead and buy a car with no warranty, no manual, no VIN or registration and the odometer is broken. Good luck with that. I hope you have a good trainer and good insurance. Most of what we produce are just pets. Loved cherished companions that go to carefully screened homes. it is only the exceptional ones we breed. That therein lies the difference.

A breed will stand or fall according to its breeders - not its loyal fanciers, not its judges and handlers, not its exhibitors and trainers. For the breeder is the only link between the past and the future; only through him can the breed stay alive.

Like the sculptor, the painter, the poet, he is driven by creative compulsion. But he, more than any of the others, is caught up in the race against time. The sculptor works in stone; his mistakes can be changed by the chisel. The breeder works with flesh; his mistakes may take generations to correct. The sculptor can put his work away and eventually come back to it; the breeder is a captive of his breed and can never really leave it.

Why then does a breeder stay a breeder? The answer is, that of all the activities in the dog sport, he alone has the joy of creation and the pride of enduring handiwork!

When proud owners bring back a fine animal for him to see years after it was sold by him as a puppy, he notes with a thrill how it has developed in just the way he thought it would. While they are happily telling him what a marvelous creature this is, he is scarcely listening as he stares at the dog; for he is not only seeing what they are, but so much more.

With mounting excitement, he watches that imperious stance, so familiar, that proudly arched neck and the keen steady gaze right out of the past; he does not see just ONE handsome dog standing there before him, but all the wonderful ones which went into the making of this one - dogs which he loved and knew so well..and now sees living again. This is the fascination of the breeder. This is the treasure of eternal youth!

šŸ¾ Navigating the Journey to Puppy Acquisition: A Comprehensive Guide for Discerning Buyers šŸ¶

Breeders often receive emails that fail to inspire or engage. Many inquiries come across as cold or impersonal, while others ask the wrong questions entirely. Itā€™s crucial to address this issue. Acquiring a dog should be viewed as a meaningful decision to welcome a new family member, not as a mere transaction.

In light of this, I feel compelled to clarify several common misconceptions and challenges that prospective puppy buyers face. This discussion aims to illuminate the essential steps for those considering the addition of a puppy to their family.

1. Prioritize Breeders Over Puppies šŸ†

A common misstep among prospective puppy buyers is the tendency to pursue a puppy based on arbitrary timelines, such as the desire for a new companion by a specific season. For example, declaring, ā€œI require a puppy by the onset of fallā€ can lead to misguided searches for litters coinciding with that timeframe. This perspective fundamentally undermines the intricate nature of responsible breeding.

Each breeder operates under a unique set of standards and criteria regarding size, temperament, and intended working abilities. Rather than fixating on acquiring a puppy, your focus should shift to identifying a reputable breeder whose philosophy aligns with your values and objectives. Establishing a meaningful relationship with a breeder who shares your priorities is essential. They may have a forthcoming litter, but if not, you can inquire about their future breeding plans or request referrals to other breeders who adhere to similar ethical standards.

1b. Embrace the Waiting Period ā³

Understanding that patience is a vital aspect of this journey is crucial. Finding a puppy on demand is exceedingly rare; prospective buyers should anticipate a waiting period that could extend several months or even longer. This interval is not merely a delay but rather a reflection of the commitment that conscientious breeders exhibit in ensuring their puppies are placed in suitable homes.

During this waiting period, it can be beneficial to educate yourself about the breedā€™s specific needs, potential health issues, and training requirements. Engaging with breed-specific forums or attending local dog shows can provide you with valuable insights and a sense of community among fellow enthusiasts.

2. Craft a Thoughtful Introduction āœ‰ļø

When reaching out to a breeder, your initial communication should be both comprehensive and articulate. A meticulously composed email or message should clearly convey your readiness for a puppy and your understanding of the breedā€™s particular characteristics. Use this opportunity to delineate your plans for training, socialization, and overall care. Transparency is vital; if you cannot commit to consistent training sessions, it is better to disclose that upfront. The breederā€™s role is to match you with a puppy that complements your lifestyle and capabilities.

For instance, a compelling introductory message might be framed as follows:

ā€œDear [Breederā€™s Name], my name is [Your Name], and I am interested in your [breed]. After extensive research, I am convinced that this breed is an ideal fit for my family due to [specific reasons, such as size, temperament, or activity level]. I recognize that puppies require substantial commitment, and I intend to [outline your plans for training, socialization, and daily routine]. I am particularly drawn to your breeding philosophy because [specifics about the breederā€™s practices, such as health testing, socialization efforts, or adherence to breed standards].ā€

This level of detail not only conveys your earnestness but also fosters a rapport that increases the likelihood of a favorable response.

2a. Approach Pricing with Discretion šŸ’°

Should pricing be a concern, it is advisable to address this topic thoughtfully, ideally at the conclusion of your initial communication or in a subsequent message once rapport has been established. A polite inquiry, such as, ā€œIf you are willing to share, what is the typical price range for [breed]s in our region?ā€ can provide valuable context. Understanding the financial expectations is essential for setting realistic parameters, especially when variations in pricing can arise from the breederā€™s reputation and practices.

Additionally, it is important to consider the long-term financial commitment of owning a dog. Beyond the initial purchase price, expenses for food, grooming, veterinary care, training, and supplies can add up significantly over time. A comprehensive budget can help you plan for these ongoing costs and ensure you can provide for your new puppy throughout its life.

3. Cultivate Resilience to Rejection šŸ’Ŗ

Not every individual will constitute an appropriate match for every breed. It is an undeniable reality that certain dogs may not be compatible with your lifestyle or living conditions. Should a breeder decide against placing a puppy with you, seek constructive feedback regarding their rationale. This inquiry can serve as a catalyst for self-reflection about which breed aligns with your familyā€™s needs.

Understanding that a breederā€™s decision is rooted in their commitment to the breed and its well-being can help you cultivate resilience. Embrace this feedback as an opportunity to refine your approach, whether itā€™s enhancing your training plans, adjusting your living situation, or considering a different breed that may be more compatible with your circumstances.

4. Exercise Transparency with Multiple Lists šŸ“‹

While the impulse to join multiple waiting lists for puppies may seem prudent, it is essential to approach this strategy with integrity. Responsible breeders invest considerable time and effort in preparing for each litter, nurturing aspirations about the ideal homes for their puppies. If a breeder discovers that you are simultaneously engaged with several lists, it can erode trust and complicate the process of matching puppies with homes.

A respectful approach would involve disclosing your status with other breeders, allowing them to understand your position. A simple acknowledgment such as, ā€œI am currently on another list but would like to explore possibilities with you as well,ā€ demonstrates honesty and aids in maintaining a professional relationship.

5. Understand the Matching Dynamics šŸ”„

Prospective puppy buyers often harbor a desire to select their puppy based on personal preferences or initial interactions during visits. However, this expectation can lead to disillusionment. Puppies may display varying behaviors and temperaments during interactions, and the most exuberant puppy may not necessarily be the best match for your household.

Breeders prioritize the meticulous process of matching puppies based on their intimate knowledge of both the puppiesā€™ dispositions and the prospective ownersā€™ needs. A responsible breeder will ensure that each puppy is placed in an environment conducive to its development, which may occasionally necessitate the selection of a puppy other than the one with whom you initially connected.

Recognizing that a breederā€™s insights stem from their experience with the breed can enhance your trust in their recommendations. Each puppy has a distinct personality, and a breederā€™s goal is to find a home where that personality can flourish.

6. Embrace Your Puppy as ā€œThe Oneā€ ā¤ļø

Upon bringing your puppy home, it is imperative to shift your mindset and fully embrace this new companion. If your initial attachment was to another puppy, recognize that your bond with your new puppy will evolve rapidly. Dedicating time and energy to understanding your puppyā€™s unique personality will foster a relationship that exceeds any initial expectations.

Invest in early socialization and training classes to help your puppy acclimate to their new environment and build a strong foundation for a well-adjusted adult dog. Consistency, positive reinforcement, and patience are key elements in establishing a trusting relationship with your new furry friend.

7. Conclude One Relationship Before Initiating Another šŸ”„

When considering the potential of engaging with multiple breeders, it is critical to approach the conclusion of one relationship with thoughtfulness before pursuing another. If you decide to explore other options, communicate this promptly to the breeder. Such courtesy ensures a respectful and professional interaction, allowing all parties to maintain clarity regarding their commitments.

Being open and honest about your journey can foster goodwill within the breeding community and may lead to recommendations or insights that could benefit your search for the right puppy.

8. Acknowledge the Breeder Community šŸŒ

Finally, it is vital to recognize that responsible breeders often exist within a small, interconnected community. Breeders frequently share insights and support one another in preserving breed integrity. If you have been on a breederā€™s list for an extended period and choose to pursue alternatives, it is courteous to inform them of your intentions. This transparency preserves the integrity of the breeding community and fosters goodwill among breeders.

In conclusion, engaging with breeders, attending local dog events, and joining breed-specific organizations can enhance your understanding of the breed and provide ongoing support as you embark on your journey as a dog owner.

By adhering to these principles, prospective puppy buyers can navigate the complexities of finding a puppy with enhanced understanding and respect for the dedicated efforts of breeders. Ultimately, fostering a constructive relationship with a breeder can facilitate the discovery of the right puppy for your family, ensuring a harmonious and joyous addition to your home. šŸ¾āœØ

Why Choosing a Breeder Who Shows Their Dogs Matters, Even for Pet Owners

When selecting a breeder, you might wonder why itā€™s recommended to choose one who shows their dogs, even if you have no intention of participating in dog shows yourself. Does this focus on show standards seem excessive or elitist? Itā€™s not, and hereā€™s why.

Dog shows are more than just competitions; they serve as a rigorous evaluation process where dogs are assessed against the breed standard. This standard includes several critical elements:

ā€¢ Soundness: This refers to a dogā€™s overall physical and mental health, ensuring all organs and faculties are functioning harmoniously.
ā€¢ Type: Breed type encompasses not just appearance but also character, bone structure, temperament, and movement, reflecting the essence of the breed.
ā€¢ Gait: The quality of a dogā€™s movement is assessed to ensure ease and freedom from structural issues.
ā€¢ Temperament: This measures a dogā€™s general attitude towards people and other animals, an essential trait for a well-rounded companion.

So why does this matter to you as a prospective pet owner? If you chose a Poodle, you likely did so because of their renowned qualities: their gentle nature, compatibility with children and other animals, and their ability to make exceptional therapy dogs. Good breeders strive to uphold these positive characteristics through their commitment to breed standards.

While not every puppy from a show-quality litter will be destined for the show ring, all will benefit from the breederā€™s dedication to preserving the breedā€™s positive traits. Puppies that are not suited for the show ring but are well-bred still embody the breedā€™s essential qualities, making them excellent family pets.

Choosing a breeder who shows their dogs is not about snobbery or elitism; itā€™s about ensuring that you get a puppy who will grow into a well-rounded, healthy companion that exemplifies the breed you fell in love with. Itā€™s about the breederā€™s commitment to preserving the breedā€™s best traits and ensuring every puppy, regardless of its future in the show ring, starts life with the best possible foundation.

In essence, selecting a breeder who shows their dogs is a way to ensure that your future puppy will be a healthy, well-adjusted member of your family. Itā€™s a reflection of love and respect for the breed, ensuring that all puppies have the opportunity to the drive and bring joy into their new homes.

Every so often, I see a question pop up about whether or not placing retired breeding animals is ethical.
To people who arenā€™t breeders, it often looks bad or feels icky... like breeders are just tossing away dogs once theyā€™ve been used to produce puppies. Let me give you a different perspective...
I receive messages and see posts from the owners of my retired show and breeding dogs. While their lives are comfortable with me, they now get to live an incredibly loved and spoiled life, many times as an only dog with a family that adores them.
Different isnā€™t good or bad, itā€™s just different. They live a different life with their families than they would have with me. They are content, satisfied, and loved with me; they continue to be all of those things, but with their very own people and without having to share those people with a pack of other dogs.
The day I let one of my retired dogs go to a family is HARD. I cry when I let them go... I look forward to updates on birthdays, ā€œgotchaā€ days, and out of the blue every few months. I see how they are loved beyond measure, and I am grateful every day that my ā€œretiredā€ dogs have been blessed into the lives of the people that love them just as much as I ever did. Iā€™m glad it could be one of mine that they love.
Quality breeders donā€™t rehome retired breeding dogs because itā€™s easy. We do it in spite of how hard it is on us because itā€™s whatā€™s best for them.

Dedication, Breeders and Puppies.

We see all types of breeders in our world of dogs. Unfortunately at the moment and I feel primarily due to Covid issues we brought out a number of people who saw a way to make a quick dollar. We saw this happening in many or all breeds of dogs. Puppies were available everywhere.
The true dedicated breeders took a different stand and cut back a bit knowing it would turn around. These changes do not happen overnight.
People often ask why Breeders sometimes have older puppies available. The answer is ā€œWe breed for ourselves and to maintain the highest quality we canā€. Yes it means that we are not pushing puppies out the door at 6-8 and even 10 weeks of age. We make sure they are properly socialized, proper health care for their age and also identification in case they are lost or stolen. Yes it happens.
Dedicated breeders often have older puppies available such as the two in this post. We want to make sure that the ones we do keep for breeding are the best out of their pedigrees. So as they mature we may see things that will make a perfectly socialized and trained puppy be better suited as a companion. Just think how much more training and health care etc has been put into them as the months go on.
Breeders also have even slightly older puppies that were not loving the show ring and then more decisions need to be made.
When contacting ā€œPreservation breedersā€ such as myself we may not have young puppies available immediately and now you know why. Do not hesitate bringing home the slightly older puppy ā€¦ most are beyond the horrible new puppy stages they go through.
Keep in mind though there are ā€˜Breedersā€™ and then there are breeders who really do not care about the breed and puppies are sold with no interest in how they mature it is just the financial aspect.
Believe it or notā€¦. Breeders are generally less expensive than all these designer breeders who have no clue as to what the puppies will end up like.
Food for thought as they say and yes coming from over 50 years of breeding and watching this sport go through so much over those years. Do your homework, do not be in a rush for such a valued addition to your family no matter the breed. Seek out Preservation breeders who are truly dedicated to each and every breed.
