🐾Is your pet at risk of being poisoned? Here are some tips to help prevent common poisonings at home.

➡ Pets can be accidentally poisoned by many substances found around the home. Here are 10 of the most common:

1. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc)
2. Human food (grapes, raisins, xylitol, onions, garlic, protein bars)
3. Human prescription medications (antidepressants, cardiac, etc)
4. Chocolate
5. Bouquets and plants
6. Household toxicants (cleaning and beauty products)
7. Veterinary products (like chewable medications)
8. Rodenticide
9. Insecticide
10. Recreational drugs (ma*****na, etc)

To help prevent accidental poisonings, make sure to keep the above items far out of reach, preferably in a closed cabinet or room.

➡ Swipe through the images for extra tips on how to prevent poisoning and keep your pets safe!

➡ What to do if you think your pet has been poisoned...

If you suspect your pet has been poisoned, call your veterinarian or take them to your local emergency animal hospital immediately.

Every second counts, so don’t wait.

➡Also try to provide as much detail about what and how much you think they ingested. Include whether they vomited, how many times, if there was any evidence of the toxin in the vomit (explaining the color can be helpful), and how much of the toxin was vomited back up (eg. how many pills).

Post-graduate training included a small animal rotating internship and a residency in small animal emergency and critical care at Cornell University. She is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

After completing her residency Dr. Madden moved to Calgary where she practices as a critical care specialist.

Dr. Madden’s interests are diverse and include management of trauma, sepsis, respiratory disorders and mechanical ventilation. She has a passion for extracorporeal therapies including therapeutic plasma exchange and dialysis.

Meet Luna 🐶
"Luna donkey accident update:

Vet did a full check over her and all her vitals are good. No sign of any injury. Sent us home with some pain drugs for the next few days as the one eye seemed to be hurting a lil bit after the incident.

Hope this lil bean has learned a lesson to give the mini donkeys some space and they are not to be “played” with like she does with Nebula. She certainly is a big dog in a lil dog body.

Very grateful to for their amazing care of Luna.

We called in advance to let them know we were on the way and when we got there they were ready to take her right away. I love how they fully explained everything they checked on her to make me feel more at ease and what to be aware of in the next few days.

If you are in the Calgary area I’d highly recommend them. They have always been so good to us. 💙 Thank you"

Uh oh. .wadi needed some help from the Paramount team 🐾

Here's what they posted:

"Wadi ingested fox tail grass somehow - he had to be sedated last night as the vet went into his esophagus and pulled out multiple slivers lodged in his throat.

He was retching for hours and puked about 7 times by the time we were able to get him in.

😔 thank you and for your quick and loving response to Wadi."

Update:
"Someone’s feeling better and back to his normal self. 😰 wild 7 days."

Keep your pets safe during this heat wave! ☀️🔥

Make sure your pets stay comfortable in the heat. Keep them hydrated with fresh water, ensure they have plenty of shade, and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours 🚰. Watch out for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting or drooling, and take immediate action if needed.

🚨 NEVER leave your pets in a parked car, not even for a minute. 🚨 Temperatures can rise dangerously fast and can be fatal. If you see an animal alone in a vehicle on a warm or hot day, call Calgary Humane Society or Calgary Police Service at 911 immediately.

🐾Say hello to this little cutie

" Thank you for taking such good care of me!

I became VERY ill recently and almost died! As it turns out, I had an Addisonian crisis! I have been diagnosed with Addisons disease.

Thankfully my mom purchased a pet health insurance policy for me that includes Accident & Illness coverage. Thanks to my mom was able to have the proper tests and care at the emergency veterinary clinic.

Addison's disease in dogs (also called hypoandrenocorticism) occurs when your dog's adrenal glands aren't producing adequate levels of corticosteroid hormones. If diagnosed and treated appropriately, these dogs can live a long, happy life."

We're happy we could help.

Please keep your pets safe in summer 🐾☀️Save for later and share with your fellow pet owner friends 🔥 With the temperature climbing this week, heat related issues can affect your pet’s health!

Here are some things to look out for, and ways to keep your dog summer safe ☀

Signs of overheating in dogs:
- Heavy, frantic panting
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Excessive drooling or thick saliva
- Bright red gums and tongue
- Rapid or irregular heart rate
- Seizures or muscle tremors
- Instability and lack of coordination
- Collapse and unconsciousness

💧 Make sure your pets have plenty of water. Refill water bowls often.

✅ Monitor your pets for signs of distress or fatigue. However lowered activity level or appetite could be normal, just as we humans often feel less energetic in hot weather.

🚗 Never leave your dog in a car - even 5 minutes is too long! Dogs can get dehydrated quickly.

🐾 Beware of hot pavement. Try to walk your dog in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.

🐶 Some breeds are more susceptible due to their compressed snouts affecting their breathing, especially in hot weather - pugs, bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles spaniels.

Contact your vet or bring your pet to the nearest animal hospital if you think they are suffering from dehydration or heat stroke.

"You came into my life one day,
so beautiful and smart,
my dear and sweet companion,
I loved you from the start.
And though I knew the time would come,
when we would have to part,
you'll never be forgotten,
you left paw prints on my heart."
