Meet Caden 🐶This cute Yorkie has had a rough time but he’s back at home after a stay with us at Paramount Animal Hospital.

Here’s what Caden had to say (his pawrents helped with the typing):

“First of all, I want to thank you for all the love and prayers I received. Mom would tell me everyday when her and Bailey visited me in the hospital.

I'm so happy to be home with my fam but still not feeling great yet. Mom says my behavior has been odd at times and I sleep a bit more than normal. I've also been picky with my food (but loving treats 😏) and I have bursts of energy and even played with my ball a little!

My last blood work showed my liver enzymes remain elevated, one value is still coming down (yay!) but the others are static. I need to stay on my meds for a little while and will do another blood work in 2 weeks. Hope it'll be very close or at normal range 🤞

Thanks to the lovely doctors and nurses at who took good care of me ❤️

Fingers crossed I'll get stronger, feeling better each day! 💕 ”
- Caden the Yorkie

Thanks for the kind words Caden, and we’re happy to help with your recovery!

🐱Thanks Rachel, we very much appreciate your kind words.

Rachel shared this 5 star Google review:

"The staff at Paramount were very compassionate and helpful in navigating our cat Evey’s illness.

We appreciated the daily updates when Evey was hospitalized, we always felt like she was in good hands. When her health started to decline we returned to Paramount for a final visit and the doctor was helpful in advising us of our options.

It does give me comfort knowing that we did everything we could to save Evey in what we felt was a top tier facility.

We received a very thoughtful sympathy card in the mail, thank you for everything Paramount.”

🐾Cancer is a dreaded word that no one wants to hear, so taking preventative measures gives dogs the best possible chance of avoiding cancer and living long, healthy, and happy lives.

✅Some prevention measures include:
- manage your pet's weight and give them plenty of exercise
- avoid secondhand smoke
- avoid toxic herbicides and pesticides (choose pet friendly options)
- get your pet checked regularly by a veterinarian
- know your pet's breed characteristics and learn to spot early signs of cancer in your pet
- choose breeds that are less susceptible to cancer (golden retrievers and boxers are particularly prone), or work with a responsible, registered breeder who has paid attention to cancer in dogs' lineage and worked to exclude it.
- discuss the right time to spay or neuter your pet with your vet ( it's not as simple as waiting until sexual maturity since effects also vary from breed to breed)

Today we remember and honour those who served. Not only humans, but also animals who played their part serving our country, recognizing the animals who have played a critical role in past and present war and combat efforts and the service dogs who play a critical role in the lives of veterans.

In Ottawa, there is an Animals in War Dedication - a memorial which honours animals that served alongside their human companions in war.

It is symbolically set next to the South African War Memorial, a battle that Canada supplied 50,000 horses for mounted troops.

The footprints of dogs, horses and mules are stamped into the concrete of the Animals in War Dedication, representing the marks they left on the battlefield.

A bronze, life-sized statue of a medical service dog stands guard over the dedication. It is wearing an authentic replica of a medical backpack that war dogs used during the First World War. Canada’s military still employs dogs to this day.

The Animals in War Dedication was created by Canadian artist and sculptor David Clendining.

Three bronze plaques depict animals in war and provide interesting facts about their roles, their sacrifices, and their unwavering loyalty. Among the roles animals have played in war:
* Mules: carried panniers and artillery.
* Horses: carried mounted troops and hauled field guns.
* Carrier pigeons: delivered messages to specific destinations.
* Dogs: used as messengers, medical assistants, bomb detectors, and search and rescue workers.

🐾How often should you take your pet to the vet? 🐱 Is an annual visit enough? 🐶

Pet care is a lifelong commitment to your pet’s health and well-being, and regular vet visits serve both you and your dog or cat best when they include planned preventative care.

🐾 How often your pet needs a check-up or wellness exam depends on their general health and stage of life:

✅ Puppies and kittens - when you bring home your new pet, it’s a good idea to include their first check-up to establish their health record even if they’ve come to you with up-to-date shots. Several vaccinations are needed between 6 wks and 16 wks.

During wellness exams, your vet would also be checking their growth, alertness, and making observations about their internal and external health condition.

At around 6 months, it’s time for the next check-up, which might also include discussions of your pet’s general housetraining and socialization, as well as getting your pet spayed or neutered.

⁣✅ Adult dogs and cats (generally 1-7/10 years depending on the type of pet and its breed) - an annual wellness exam is recommended to check their overall health, and any vaccination updates.

⁣✅ Senior pets (7 to 10 years and older) - It’s a good idea to have check-ups twice a year as your dog or cat gets older. Even if they seem to be in good health a thorough wellness exam with blood and urine tests can often detect underlying illnesses, and give ample time for preventative treatment to give them a long and happy life with you.

If you’re in the Calgary area, you can contact us to schedule a toe-to-tail wellness exam for your dog or cat. 🐱🐶
