What do you do when your dog grows old...

♡ My name is Gillian, I groom a lot of the senior dogs that come into the shop. As I see so many now that are aging, as we all are, I feel a post should be made as to what to expect ♡

♡ This guy had a good day for his grooming, even though he still needed 2 groomers. One person to shave and the other to hold his body steady as this little old man was very wobbly, and we don't want him falling into our sharp tools.

♡ Not every senior dog needs extra help, but there are a lot that do, and so the owners get what we call "the comfort groom" chat.

♡ What this means is that your once young pup has now reached an age where they can no longer tolerate grooming as they once did. This can be for a number of reasons such as:
●Pain
●Anxiety
●Health issues (some you may not be aware of, but we might notice a change, big or small, and will tell you)
●Dementia (yes, your dogs can have this, too)

♡ What does this mean for your dog? Well, it means your dog will decide what it can tolerate that day. It can mean that they just need a shorter haircut because brushing out their hair is just too much on their bodies now. (This goes for double coated dogs aswell, as some need to be shaved because they can not tolerate having their undercoat brushed out, and it is the most comfortable and humane option for them). Or it may mean they get a "comfort groom." A comfort groom is what this little old man got. It is a short shave. This may mean it is nose to tail depending on the dogs comfort level that day, and they may or may not receive a bath. It entirely depends on them at that moment.

♡ Some dogs develop Dementia. This will play a large role in what your pup will receive for a groom, as it will determine what they can tolerate that day. If we suspect this is what's happening, we will be honest and tell you. We will always work around your pets grooming tolerances if they ever get to this point, as we want them safe and comfortable. This means that the haircut may not be perfect, and sometimes parts won't get done at all for safety reasons.

♡ No matter how hard we try to ensure they are comfortable while with us, a routine grooming is hard on their aging bodies. Arthritis and other mobility issues can make a routine grooming extremely physically demanding and may cause them to act out of sorts for a day or two after grooming. This is generally because of pain, and having them on pain management for grooming days will not only help them be more comfortable during the grooming process but also after. If we feel they will benefit from it, we will discuss this with you.

♡ So we ask that you understand that this may be a reality one day and we will work with you to help make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible to minimize any stress on them during their grooming.

****REMINDER****

If your dog is social (dog park, dog walker, play dates, and kennels!) Please be proactive and treat them for hitch hikers. We have an increase of lice again. Your dog will be sent home immediately as is and there will be a $25 cleaning fee. We don't want to spread to other dogs, and we have to spray the whole shop with a spray purchased from the vet clinic. PLEASE be proactive.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, those double coated dogs are going to be molting! Please make sure you book 3-4 weeks in advance. With our own vacation time and just busy season in general, it's going to be very busy very soon. Please be patient and kind, we will have a wait list going as usual.

If you have a preference on a groomer please mention it on the phone so we can book accordingly. We have also stopped taking larger haircut dogs over 80lbs for the time being.

Just a friendly reminder to please keep your pets treated year round for fleas, lice and ticks. Yes it is cold out but your pets are nice and warm and so is your house. If we find friends on your pup they will be sent home in a "as is" condition and you will be charge a cleaning fee ontop of a partial grooming fee if the hitchhikers are caught after the bath.

Is that time of the year again! If you have specific days you would like in December please book them ASAP. We have limited kennel space as all of the dogs seem to come large sized these days. We are also going to be open a few days after Christmas ♡ then closed again until after New Years

We are booking for October 26th and after right now. If you have your dog on a specific rotation we highly suggest booking the next appointment or 2 on pick up to guarantee you get the weeks you are wanting. We do have a waitlist as well, but please remember we will not leave a message, we will go onto the next person if you don't answer so PLEASE make sure your ringer is on. As always, please be patient and be kind with us, we can only do so many dogs a day.

**Late pick ups: we charge $1 per minute after close (not if we are requiring extra time on your pet due to a busy day). We also have appointments after work and daycare to get to. Thank-you ♡

We highly recommend everyone taking a first aid course ♡ you never know when you will need it. And why not support an awesome local rescue at the same time! They hold socialization walks with trainers as well and are awesome people.

Let's chat about us humans being prepared for our dogs. Just like human CPR and first aid, there are courses and certifications we must have! It is incredibly important to ensure we can prevent any accidents/illnesses and be able to act when needed.

We have teamed up with to ensure everyone who owns dogs or has any service relating to dogs is certified!

Saturday Oct 29 you can learn how to be prepared for your doggo! We will be there! The best part of all!! is donating the proceeds to us!!

We are seeing lots of lice again. If your pet seems more itchy than normal please check their face, behind the ears, armpits etc. One plus of lice is they are very very slooooooow and do not jump like fleas. If your pet is social, example; goes to dog parks, please be proactive and treat them to be safe.

If we find them on your dog they will be sent home as is and rebooked after treatment and a cleaning fee will be charged as we have to spray our entire shop with products from the vet clinic and deep clean everything.

We are now booking for August 20th and after!
We do have a wait list for any cancelations or no shows that happen. If you do not show up for your appointment you will be charged on your dogs next appointment. First time is $25 and anything after is half of the cost of your dogs groom. Life happens, emergencies happen, we just want a phone call please 🙏🏻
Please remember to be patient and kind. We are working extremely hard every day and can only groom so many dogs a day.
