The holidays bring about loads of fun but also changes in routines.

It can be really frustrating and embarrassing to be welcoming guests into your home while your dog is losing his mind.

These changes can be enough to throw off the harmony in your home and cause some unexpected behaviors in your dog.

Whether you’re traveling or having more guests over than usual, prepare your dog in these ways:

A) Give them their own space. Provide them a room, a crate, or a special bed where they can be sure that good things will happen (Think: treats!) Do this several days before you begin hosting events or travel begins.

B) Play calming classical music or DogTV to help drown out stimuli that might spark their anxiety and barking.

C) Make sure your dog’s needs are met. As a human, it’s difficult to navigate life if you haven’t slept enough or eaten the right food, and the same applies to your dog! They may be more high-strung if their routines have been changed. So it’s a great time to make sure their basic needs have been met each day - good food, fresh water, a bit of mental stimulation and/or exercise (like an exploratory walk at their own pace), and good sleep. These basics can go a long way in helping navigate the changes in their routines.

Your dog’s basic needs include:
- 12-14 hours of sleep a day
- Freshwater (can be forgotten or displaced when guests come)
- Exploratory walks outdoors
- Food delivery that inspires problem-solving thinking
- Minimal table scraps or holiday treats

During hectic holiday activities, it's easy to lose track of basic needs so don’t forget to make sure their basics are covered.

Thanks to everyone who came out to have fun at our SDDA trial in spite of the wasps! Thank you also to Catuso Design and the Canine Fitness Centre for the use of their facilities, to our judges, and to our many volunteers.
