Muzzle Misconceptions

1. Muzzles are only used to prevent biting: Muzzles are a helpful tool in preventing dogs from engaging in dangerous behaviour with their mouths – not just biting

Fact: Muzzles can help prevent dogs from eating non-food items

2. If a dog is wearing a muzzle they must have a bite history: A muzzle doesn’t necessarily mean a dog has bitten someone in the past. Many owners use muzzles preventatively to ensure their dog and the people around they are safe.

Fact: Many dogs who wear muzzles have never bitten because they wear a muzzle.

3. There is no reason to muzzle a friendly dog: In addition to preventing your dog from eating non-food items, muzzles are safe and effective tools to help even the friendliest dogs get through stressful situations safely.

4. Muzzles are cruel: Properly used, well fitted muzzles should not cause any pain or discomfort. Your dog may not love a muzzle the first time it is worn, but basic positive reinforcement training will help them get used to their new head gear.

Fact: If used incorrectly, anything can be cruel – including leashes, collars and everything else we put on our dogs.

There is no reason to place unnecessary stigma on muzzles. We can break down these potentially harmful stereotypes and start seeing the dogs behind muzzles for the amazing pets they are!

Uh-Oh! Say NO! to Bones 😲

This was a case at another calgary clinic and we thought it would be a great head-up that bones are not safe for your pets.

A good alternative could be the Nylabone as it provides more flexibity and a safer alternative to traditional bones.

January is National Train Your Dog Month!

When should I start training my puppy?

Training actually starts the second your puppy comes home.

Starting puppy training early is vital because young dogs are more receptive to learning and adapting to new experiences. The early weeks and months are a critical developmental period when behaviors are established. Training during this time helps prevent undesirable habits, encourages socialization, and shapes positive behaviors, setting the groundwork for a well-behaved adult dog.

Why is it important to trim your pets nails?

1. Overgrown nails can catch on objects and be ripped off. OUCH!
2. Nails can curl and grow into the paw pads which causes pain and in some cases, infection.
3. Nails with overgrowth can cause your pets posture and balance to change which can lead to worsening joint pain.

The average pet will need a nail trim every 3-4 weeks. If you can hear click on the ground, they're probably too long!

Assessing your dog's body condition involves checking factors like ribs, waist, and overall physique.

Here's a simple scale:
Underweight: Ribs easily visible, minimal fat covering. Waist highly pronounced.
Ideal: Ribs palpable but not prominently visible. Waist visible behind ribs.
Overweight: Ribs difficult to feel under fat. Waist barely noticeable.
Obese: Excess fat evident over ribs and base of tail. Waist and abdominal tuck absent.

To check:
Ribs: Run your hands along your dog's side. You should feel ribs without excessive fat.
Waist: View your dog from above. There should be a noticeable waist behind the ribs.
Profile: Observe your dog from the side. The abdomen should tuck up behind the ribcage.
Consult your vet for a precise evaluation, especially considering breed variations. Proper diet and exercise can help manage weight.
