We all wish agriculture was clean and green, but it's not. Vegetables and fruits are laden with chemicals, and the NON-GMO label only means something is not Genetically modified. It is still sprayed and treated with poor-quality water. Home-grown is best; organically grown and certified organic are next in line. Super accumulators are also something to take notice as they clean the soil and bring those contaminants and heavy metals into the plant. You need the cleanest soils for these types of veggies.
