On Saturday, August 10th we said goodbye to our clinic cat, Barney. But he was so much more than just a clinic cat.
Barney arrived at the clinic in 2012, almost feral and quite frightened, found on a farm east of the city, he was brought in for neutering, vaccinations, and to find what was supposed to be a new forever home. What we soon discovered was that Barney wasn’t cut out for a typical house cat life.
Fortunately, living at the clinic let him pursue his many aspirations in life. From his role as babysitter, affectionately known as Uncle Barney to many kittens who passed through our doors, to his unexpected talent for IT services (who knew a few keystrokes could rotate your screen by 90 degrees?), Barney never failed to entertain us.
But perhaps his greatest gift was being a friend. Regardless of size, species, or demeanor, Barney made an effort to befriend everyone. He persistently tried to win over Lizzy, our other clinic who we said goodbye to in 2022. Although Lizzy remained aloof, Barney knew deep down she appreciated his attention. And on a handful of occasions his congeniality with others sometimes led to near-mishaps, but usually ended up with someone scooping him up with a reminder that not everyone shared his same outlook on life.
Barney’s circle of friends extended beyond animals. He won over countless human hearts as well. As he gradually came out of his shell, he discovered that people were a wonderful source of pets. In the last few years of his life, he took on the role of a front desk ambassador, outshining even the most enthusiastic Wal-Mart greeters. He loved to welcome visitors, lounging in one of his many beds and relishing any pat or compliment given to him. And if you were fortunate, you might have received one of his famously enthusiastic kisses.
His handsome face and crooked smile, which only added to his charm, are going to be incredibly missed. And his loss will be felt by all those who knew him. But those who have loved an animal understand that it’s not truly goodbye – it’s simply “until we meet again.” We love you, Barney.

It's National Check the Chip Day! Did you know for traveling with a dog into the US currently one of their requirements is your dog must be micro chipped. Not sure if your pet is micro chipped? Don't worry, it's as simple as scanning their bodies with a microchip scanner to check. 🐶🐱🐾❤

Did you know ticks are active as early as spring. In fact, ticks can be active every season – any day when temperatures reach 4°C and above. Be prepared. Once a tick is on your pet, they can be hard to find. Is your pet covered for tick prevention?

Why should you microchip your pet? The purpose of a microchip is to help aid in getting a pet back to their families should they get out of the house. Every vet clinic as well as the City of Calgary has a microchip scanner which will read the individual chip on said pet. Each microchip is registered to a the specific company they have been manufactured from and each company has their owner database where the pets information is stored.

With the warm weather, thunderstorms and fireworks coming making sure your pet has some form of identification is key to have your pet returned home if found. If your pet has a microchip ensuring your contact details such as phone number and address are vital to getting your pet back to you. Microchips, tattoos, air tags, tags and collars are all great options when dealing with a lost pet. 🐾🐶🐱❤

IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING TRAVEL TO THE UNITED STATES as of July, 22nd 2024.

These are the most up to date requirements for traveling to the US for dogs.

Owner must fill out CDC Dog Import Form online.
Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival.
Dogs must be at least 6 months old.
Must have a microchip.

Visit the CDC website for the most up to date information. 🐶
