Priscilla, Brig, and Asher had a great Agility trial
Priscilla and her dogs, Asher and Brig, competed in agility for the first time recently and came away with lots of qualifying rounds and placements!
The Importance of Training Handling and Positioning Dogs
One of Priscillaโs dogs recently injured his feet and it reminded us of the importance in training our dogs from puppies to accept and be comfortable with having all their body parts handled and with being placed into positions where you can access any body part you need.
Though this is immensely helpful for all dogs for grooming, it serves many other purposes.
Wound/injury care: as you can see in this video Priscilla is easily able to place her dog into a laying on his side positioning giving her easy access to her dogโs foot to be able to treat and wrap the injury. This also means the dog is not having to balance on 3 legs (which in this case also have sores) while she attempts to work on this foot.
Vet/Physio care: of course a vet or physio need to be able to touch and handle many different places on your dog, but they also may need to place your dog into different positions for X-rays, massages, wound care, etc. Having a dog trained to accept these things will make a stressful vet appointment into one that is as comfortable as possible.
Grooming for the elderly or compromised dog: some dogs as they get older or due to health issues find it very difficult to stand or sit for the lengths of time needed to complete a grooming. If the dog has been accustomed to being placed into different positions, especially a laying on the side position while handling its legs/feet, the groomer will be able to utilize those positions to help the dog remain as comfortable as possible while they complete the needed grooming.
We understand that every dog is an individual and that each dog will have varying degrees on how comfortable they can become with handling and positioning, but teaching them as young as possible in a positive way can help set them up for success for any need that could arise in the future.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Priscilla is back from a successful dog show!

Thought weโd share a video of some of the tricks weโre working on since weโre all stuck at home! This is Priscilla and one of her standard poodles, Asher, performing โroll up in a blanketโ and โorbitโ
Banding over the eyes
I did up another video on how to band the hair over your dogโs eyes if their hair is getting overgrown and they canโt see. The shorter your dogโs hair the smaller sections that you would take. ๐
