Do you ever lean in for a tender peck on your pet's little snoot, only to be assailed by a stench so foul, it could curdle milk and wither flowers? It happens to the best of us. Fear not friends, for today, is Fresh Breath Day, and we're on a mission to turn those hot garbage slobbers into sweet, sweet nuzzles. Regular dental care and hygiene practices can go a long way in ensuring optimal oral health. To prevent plaque from building up in your pet's mouth:
Brush their teeth regularly.
Use toothpaste specifically formulated for pets.
Provide dental chews, which can help reduce plaque and freshen their breath.
Consider using water additives that promote dental health.
Ask your veterinarian for recommended brands of dental diet foods, which can contribute to oral hygiene.
Schedule regular dental cleanings with your veterinarian to maintain optimal dental health.
We don't want to brush off our cuddles, so let's keep those smiles bright and banish bad breath!

Your pet wants to be adventuring at your side throughout August, not itching, scratching, biting, and licking with no relief. The warm weather and outdoor exploration can expose our pets to various irritants, like parasites, other allergens, and stress-induced reactions.
This Itchy Pet Awareness Month, it's crucial to pay attention to any signs of allergies, such as excessive sneezing, coughing, inflamed skin, chewing of paws or fur, and of course itching like crazy. By addressing these itchy woes early on and booking an appointment with your veterinarian, you can prevent further discomfort and spend the last of the summer together enjoying the great outdoors!

Do we deserve dogs? Pet owning philosophers have surely pondered this for centuries, and we're not sure we can answer this in a social media post. However, we do know that dogs come in all shapes and sizes, from teeny tiny chihuahuas to huge ol' Great Danes, and each loyal, furry companion has a unique, joyous, and empathetic spark that helps us appreciate the simple pleasures of life and gets us through the tough times when we'd rather be curled in a ball.

So, on this World Dog Day, let's celebrate the furry friends in our lives and hearts with extra pats, treats, cuddles, and thoughts.

It’s smoky in Alberta! We can all feel how the smoke impacts us, and if the smoke is bothering you, it is likely irritating for your pets as well.

-Keep pets indoors as much as possible, and keep your windows shut.
-Birds are particularly susceptible and should not be allowed outside when smoke or particulate matter are present.
-Let dogs and cats outside only for brief bathroom breaks if air quality alerts are in effect.
-Avoid intense outdoor exercise during periods of poor air quality. Exercise pets when dust and smoke has settled.

Any pets with cardiovascular or respiratory diseases will be particularly susceptible to the smoke. Keep an eye out for the following symptoms:
-Coughing or gagging
-Difficulty breathing, including open-mouth breathing and increased noise when breathing
-Eye irritation and excessive watering
-Inflammation of the throat or mouth
-Nasal discharge
-Asthma-like symptoms
-Increased breathing rate
-Fatigue or weakness
-Disorientation or stumbling
-Reduced appetite and/or thirst

May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month! You might be surprised to learn that some of the same allergens that can affect us, like the pollen in the air, grasses, and dust mites, can also irritate our pets.

Some common signs of seasonal allergies in pets include excessive scratching, sneezing, and chewing, as well as ear infections, scooting, and respiratory issues. We can help our companions breathe a little easier when we educate ourselves and others about these signs. If you suspect your pet is suffering from allergies or asthma, consult with your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Our clinic has a ton of options to help your furry friend deal with their seasonal allergies. There's no one-size-fits-all solution but specialized diets, medications, maybe a spa day with fancy shampoos and sprays, or environmental changes can help manage symptoms and improve your pet's quality of life.

Seasonal allergies can affect dogs just like humans, but with a few preventative measures & testing or medicine, you can get these issues under control.

Consider giving your pets some tasty, safe treats or toys, and extra cuddles. Wishing you all a delicious and peaceful Good Friday! 🐰🐶🐱

Ticks can carry diseases and harm our furry friends, so it's essential to hunt them down regularly, especially after our best buds have been outside.
Start with the head and work your way down, feeling for any bumps.
Use a fine-toothed comb to part your pet's fur and look for ticks.
Check your pet's paws, underbelly, ear flaps, and under the collar, as these are common places for ticks to hide.
If you find a tick, use a tick removal tool to gently remove it, and submit it to https://www.etick.ca to evaluate your pet's risk.

Remember, prevention is key, so contact us to talk about tick prevention options today!

Today is K9 Veteran's day; a day to honor the four-legged veteran heroes who have risked their lives to keep our communities safe by apprehending suspects, and searching and rescuing missing people. But our K9 heroes need support too. Just like us, they can fall ill and require life-saving blood transfusions. That's why blood donor clinics for dogs are so critical.

The Canadian Animal Blood Bank is advancing veterinary medicine by raising awareness and educating the community about transfusion medicine. If your dog is calm, healthy, and weighs at least 55lbs, between the ages of 1-8, and up-to-date on vaccinations and preventative heartworm medication, they too can be a hero and save lives. Let's seize this K9 Veteran's Day as an opportunity to make a difference!
