Ozzie, one of our receptionists dogs is an 11 year old English bulldog, and he is an absolute darling. Weighing in at a whopping 34kg, his absolute favourite thing is to sit directly on people’s laps!

It’s National Pet ID Week (April 17-24)!
Pet identification is a crucial step to keeping pets safe. Even the most well-behaved cats and dogs can get lost, runoff unexpectedly, or get separated from their owners.
How to observe :
- Add identification to your pets collar
- Consider getting your pet microchipped. If your pet is already microchipped, make sure your address and phone number are up to date with the manufacturer
- Keep the microchip brand, the contact information of the company, and the microchip number of your pet in an accessible place
- Keep current photos of your animals

What is the best food to help with dental care for your pet?

Hard food will help remove plaque from teeth. There are special diets specifically manufactured to help control plaque. Feeding these diets in conjunction with daily brushing is the best to help keep your furry friends’ teeth clean. Diet alone will not control plaque, but it will help.

Choosing the right dental chew:

Do all those “dental chews” that you find in pet stores work?
Not all chewing is equal in equal when it comes to dental prevention. Bones or hard toys will increase the risk or fracturing your pets’ teeth which will contribute to dental disease rather than help with it. However, there are some dental chews on the market that contain a VOHC seal. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is a non- profit organization of board-certified veterinary dentists that review studies and accept dental products that have been shown to reduce the accumulation of plaque and/or tartar.

Do we have to use anesthesia to professionally clean your pet’s teeth?

Yes! Anesthesia is necessary when performing teeth cleanings. It provides 3 important functions:
- Immobilization in order to clean below the gum line
- Pain control
- The ability to place a tube into the windpipe, so bacterial products do not enter the respiratory system

How often does your pet need to have their teeth cleaned at the vet?

It depends on the degree of plaque and tartar accumulation. Look for an accumulation of yellow or brown material at the area where the tooth meets the gum line, especially over the cheek teeth and canines. Once you notice plaque or tartar accumulation, it’s time for a professional cleaning!

How to brush your pets teeth:
Brushing once or twice daily is optimum. It is usually a fun and easy procedure. First, pick a soft-bristled or finger toothbrush. Next, get toothpaste from your veterinarian (do not use human toothpaste because it has detergents in it that should not be swallowed).

Why should you brush your dog’s or cat’s teeth?
Daily removal of plaque is the key to an oral hygiene program. Unless your pet’s teeth are brushed daily, plaque, which is the accumulation of bacteria, will build at the gum line. Eventually, calculus forms, further irritating the gums, and then the infection progresses to loosen and destroy the tooth’s attachment. In addition to loose teeth, infection under the gum line can spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart.
