Did you know that veterinary medicine was once a male-dominated profession? Just a few decades ago, women made up only a small fraction of veterinarians. But over time, the field has transformed—today, nearly 80% of veterinary students in North America are women!

At VCA Horizon Group, women aren’t just part of the team—they are the team! Out of our four clinics, only five of our staff members are men, and at VCA Marlborough, every full-time staff member is a woman! From veterinarians and technicians to client care specialists and management, these incredible women bring skill, compassion, and dedication to every pet they care for.

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the trailblazers who paved the way for women in veterinary medicine and the amazing women shaping its future today. Tag a woman in the field who inspires you!

🐾 Foreign Body Friday: Eddie’s Story 🐾

Meet Eddie, a brave kitty who gave his family quite the scare last year!

Eddie first started feeling unwell at the end of May, showing signs of inappetence. After an initial visit to another hospital, he came to us at VCA McKenzie Towne in early June for further evaluation. His lab work didn’t reveal any clear answers, so his family opted for supportive care, including an appetite stimulant and anti-nausea medications. Unfortunately, Eddie still wasn’t improving.

On June 10th, we took radiographs and discovered the culprit—a foreign body lodged in his small intestine. Eddie was rapidly losing weight and was very sick, so he needed emergency surgery right away. During the procedure, our team successfully removed the blockage and placed a feeding tube to ensure he could get the nutrition he needed for a smooth recovery.

Over the next several days, Eddie split his time between the clinic (during the day) and home (with his loving family at night). Thanks to dedicated care and his fighting spirit, Eddie had his feeding tube removed after 10 days and was officially back to his normal self by the end of July!

Now, Eddie is happy, healthy, and back to living his best life—all thanks to quick action, a dedicated veterinary team, and his wonderful pet parents.

Foreign bodies are no joke! If your pet suddenly loses their appetite, vomits, or seems lethargic, don’t wait—get them checked out. Early detection can make all the difference!

We're thrilled to share an incredibly uplifting story this week, featuring a special cat named Miracle!🐱

Miracle first came to our attention during a booster vaccine where, during his examination, our veterinary team discovered he had an umbilical hernia and was unneutered. Unfortunately, financial constraints were a significant hurdle to address these necessary medical needs.

Recognizing Miracle's situation, our dedicated VCA Canada Harvest Hills Animal Hospital team immediately explored the possibility of him qualifying for our Paw It Forward program. With swift approval, Miracle's surgery was scheduled. However, when the pre-anesthetic blood work results came back, we discovered a complication that required further investigation.

Thanks to the Paw It Forward program, we were able to conduct additional testing and provide the necessary medications. Our team worked diligently to develop a safe and effective surgical plan for Miracle.

One month later, Miracle underwent a successful surgical procedure and has since made a full recovery, much to the delight of his grateful owner!

We're incredibly proud to be a part of Miracle's journey to a healthier, happier life.

Ever wonder why giving medicine to a cat is so much harder than giving it to a dog? It’s because cats are independent, picky, and their senses are on point—especially when it comes to taste. They can spot a pill a mile away and will resist with all their might. Meanwhile, dogs are usually more food-driven and often won’t hesitate to take their medicine if it’s hidden in a tasty treat.

But don’t worry—here are some tips to help make it easier for both pets:

For Dogs:
1. Hide the pill in a delicious treat like peanut butter, cheese, or even a hot dog slice.
2. Mix liquid meds with a bit of broth or yogurt to mask the taste.
3. Don’t forget to reward them with a treat or praise after each dose!

For Cats:
1. Use pill pockets or soft treats made specifically for giving meds. These can be a lifesaver!
2. If you’re using liquid medication, try a pill syringe and gently sq**rt it into the side of their mouth—just be sure to hold their head steady.
3. Wrap the pill in a small amount of their favorite food, like tuna, baby food, or even a bit of butter to help it go down.

Don’t forget: it's important to stay safe and avoid injury when giving your pet medication. Cats in particular can be quick and unpredictable, so always approach with care. If it’s becoming too stressful or difficult, talk to your vet to explore alternative medication options that are as low-stress as possible for both you and your pet.

Sunny with a chance of ticks?

March is , a reminder that isn't just a seasonal concern.

can be active in temperatures as low as 4°C, meaning they can pose a risk even during winter months.

We encourage pet owners to remain vigilant year-round. This includes performing daily tick checks, understanding tick habitats, and consulting with your veterinarian about effective tick control measures.

Protect your pets from the potential dangers of ticks and tick-borne diseases with consistent, proactive care.

Kitten Teeth: Tiny to Tough! Did you know a kitten’s teeth go through a big transformation in just a few months?

At 3 weeks old, kittens start getting their baby teeth—tiny, needle-sharp, and perfect for nursing and exploring solid food.

By 5 months old, those baby teeth start falling out, making way for adult teeth! This is when teething happens—cue the extra chewing on anything they can get their paws on!

If you notice excessive drooling, chewing, or even finding tiny teeth around the house, don’t worry—it’s all part of growing up!

Drop a photo of your teething kittens in the comments! We’d love to see those adorable little chompers!

Did you know February is Beat the Heat Month, and today is World Spay Day? Spaying is one of the most important things you can do for your female pet’s health and wellbeing. With spring around the corner, now is the perfect time to spay before “kitten and puppy season” begins!

Why Spay your pet?
- Prevents Unwanted Litters – A single unspayed cat and her offspring can produce thousands of kittens in just a few years. Shelters and rescues are overwhelmed every spring with litters needing homes.
- Protects Against Cancer & Infections – Spaying eliminates the risk of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra) and drastically reduces the risk of mammary cancer.
- Stops Heat Cycles – No more yowling, restless behavior, or attracting unwanted attention from male animals.
- Saves You Money – In Calgary, city licensing fees are lower for spayed pets!

Spaying your pet means a healthier, happier pet and helps reduce pet overpopulation in our community. If your furry friend isn’t spayed yet, call us to book an appointment!

Regular vet check-ups aren’t just for when pets are sick—they often help catch health issues early, prevent disease, and improve overall well-being. Here’s why preventive care matters:

Early Detection – Regular exams and lab work help to spot illnesses like cancer or diabetes before they become serious.
Disease Prevention – Vaccines protect pets (and their furry friends) from contagious illnesses.
Healthy Habits – Vets offer advice on nutrition, exercise, and dental care.
Save Money – Treating health issues early is often far less costly than waiting!
Better Quality of Life – Healthy pets = happy, longer lives.

Don’t wait for symptoms—book your pet’s wellness exam today!
