It's - You know what that means!

It means we celebrate the 20,923 x-rays taken in 2024 hands-free! It means a whopping 85% of our x-rays are now being taken hands-free! 🙌 And that’s just counting the ones entered through our system (we all know about retakes😉).

Why does this matter? By moving to , we’re significantly reducing for our associates, contributing to a safer workplace while continuing to provide top-tier care for our patients. It's a win for both our teams and our animal patients!

A special shout-out to the amazing team over at VCA Canada Western Veterinary Specialist & Emergency Centre for capturing diagnostic-quality images for radiation therapy planning on this beautiful patient. And we can’t help but smile at the creative scrunchie ear application—great job Team Western! 🎀

It's ear-mite Monday.....ew. Here is your reminder that ear mites are microscopic pests that live in your pet’s ears and can cause serious irritation and discomfort.

Common signs of ear mites include:
- Excessive scratching or head shaking
- Dark discharge from the ears
- Red or inflamed ears
- A foul odor

These mites are contagious, especially in multi-pet households! If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait—bring your pet in for a check-up. Early detection and treatment can prevent infections and keep your pet happy and healthy.

Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for your pet's overall health and well-being.

Weight can be influenced by factors such as age, breed, health conditions, feeding routines, overfeeding, calorie-dense diets, inactivity, and genetics. To help your pet stay at a healthy weight, focus on these four simple steps.

🐕 Healthy Shape: Weighing them is not the only way to check if they're overweight. You can find out if your pet is a healthy weight by asking your veterinarian how to use the . The BCS is a 9-point system that evaluates physique, ranging from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (severely obese). An ideal score of 5 represents a healthy shape, where the ribs are easily felt, the waist is visible when viewed from above, and the abdomen tucks up behind the rib cage when viewed from the side.

🥎 Healthy Activity: Start by considering breed, as different breeds have unique energy levels and exercise needs. Likewise, your pet's age and health will play a key role in determining the right amount of activity for them. Regular exercise will ensure your pets keep fit, stay active and feel happy.

🥣 Healthy Portioning: They're smaller than you think! A good practice is to limit treats to less than 10% of your pet's daily calorie needs, which your veterinarian can help you determine. Then, reduce the amount of their regular food by an amount roughly equal to the calories contained in any treats given.

💗 Healthy Growth: As they grow, it’s essential to stay informed about changing needs at each stage of development. Consulting with your veterinarian and asking questions will ensure you feel confident in providing the care your pet requires as they mature.

Obesity may be the number one nutritional disorder of pets in North America, but it is also one that we can manage and monitor by utilizing systems like the BCS.

Together, we can make their life happier, healthier, and longer!

If your vet has recommended gabapentin before your cat’s next visit, it’s because they want to make the experience as stress-free as possible for both you and your feline friend. Research shows that a single dose of gabapentin, given orally 90 minutes to 2–3 hours before a vet visit, can significantly reduce signs of stress and anxiety in cats during transportation and examination.

Here’s why gabapentin might help:

- Less Stress, More Comfort
Cats are creatures of habit, and trips to the vet can be overwhelming. Gabapentin can help to calm your cat, making transportation and the veterinary visit less stressful.

- Improved Compliance
A calmer cat means your vet can perform a more thorough exam without causing undue stress. For some cats, gabapentin makes the difference between being examined safely and needing more invasive measures, like sedation.

- Reduced Aggression
Fear and anxiety can lead to defensive behaviours in cats. Gabapentin reduces fear-based aggression, helping everyone involved feel safer and more at ease.

- Safer Handling
Cats under the effects of gabapentin are generally easier to handle, which means less restraint is needed. This aligns with the vet’s goal of providing a low-stress experience.

The goal of prescribing gabapentin is to create a positive or at least neutral experience for your cat, so future visits are less stressful. Think of it as setting the stage for a smoother journey to good health!

For more information, check with your veterinarian at your pet's next visit.
