We are a nonprofit organization that grows fresh produce for social agencies in Calgary with food access programs. Thanks to our volunteers and the generous spirit of the community, we have managed to donate to over 40 Compassionate Food Access Agencies in Calgary, with 95% of our recipients being women and children. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that all residents of Calgary, especially those wh
o are vulnerable and living in poverty, have consistent access to healthy, local food. Founded in 2011, we saw our first harvest in 2013. As of May 2021 we are celebrating 8 years in the fight against food-insecurity! We believe in our fundamental rights to access food and shelter. More than that, we view urban agriculture as a feasible, immediate response to food access & food dignity among food-insecure Calgarians living below the poverty line. We donate 100% of the fresh food we grow.

We’re hiring farm managers this summer! As a farm manager, you will primarily be responsible for day to day activities at the farm, and leading groups and new volunteers 🌱👩🏽🌾 As we’re starting up at a new location, this is also a great opportunity to be involved in farm planning and set up. Our new location is accessible by car, bike or transit.
Gardening/farming experience is preferred but not required. Must be 15-30 years old and a Canadian citizen/permanent resident/refugee (per Canada Summer Jobs) and available to work 30 hours per week starting June 1 until mid-end of September 2024. As many of you know, we packed up and moved from our location in Balzac last fall. We’re getting ready to move to a new location in a couple months to resume our operations in time for the growing season and we need your help! Moving costs are very expensive, especially for our community farm with equipment and supplies, plus permitting and transportation fees. This week we harvested garlic and onions 🧄 🧅 They will be left to cure on racks for the next couple of weeks. We “overwinter” our garlic and onions, meaning that we plant in the fall and harvest the following summer. After harvesting, they need to cure in a warm and well ventilated area. This helps increase storage time and ensures the best flavour!

Unfortunately our harvest has been very delayed this year. ➡️ Typically around this time, we have loads of greens like kale, spinach and chard ready with beans, peas and lettuce closely behind. But due to increased construction right next to the farm and less visits at the farm by our dog, we’ve had a huge increase in wildlife like deer and gophers that have disseminated our garden beds and eaten the majority of our greens 💔 This, plus the up and down weather we’ve had and an impending move to prepare for has definitely made this a challenging growing season.
We are so grateful for our awesome farm managers and volunteers that are helping us to turn the season around with their creativity, skills and hard work 💚 We harvested our first handful of tomatoes earlier this week and we’re hoping to have lots of other produce ready for harvest over the next couple months!
