Reactive dogs spend so much time working on their reactivity when being trained. Adding in some fun things for them to learn helps give their brain a break from the REALLY stressful stuff like looking at triggers!🧠
Casper had a great walk outside seeing his triggers (humans on benches) so to give his brain a break and have some fun she practiced his Touch cue and he's a PRO!✋
How to teach Touch?🤔
Take a piece of food in your open palm and cover it with your thumb.
Hold your hand out and say “touch” when the dog hits their nose to your palm to get the food say yes and give them the treat.
Keep practicing this with the treat in hand for a few reps and then take the treat out of your hand and ask her to touch but just with your open palm.
When they bump your hand with their nose, say yes and reward. The dog will learn very quickly how to “touch” your palm.
To extend this training to other items, start by setting your palm as the target. Keep your hand in the same position on the wall and encourage touches.
Practice this routine extensively before gradually moving your hand away.
Introduce a slight element of challenge by withholding the treat when your dogs touch your hand, prompting them to try touching the spot on the wall. Acknowledge their effort with a "yes" and a reward.
This method is effective for teaching them to jump on objects, navigate obstacles, and use bells to indicate a need to go outside.
Touch is just one of the cues that you can teach to help your dog have fun during stressful training. Below are some other great cues to teach or practice👇
