We're thrilled to share an incredibly uplifting story this week, featuring a special cat named Miracle!🐱

Miracle first came to our attention during a booster vaccine where, during his examination, our veterinary team discovered he had an umbilical hernia and was unneutered. Unfortunately, financial constraints were a significant hurdle to address these necessary medical needs.

Recognizing Miracle's situation, our dedicated VCA Canada Harvest Hills Animal Hospital team immediately explored the possibility of him qualifying for our Paw It Forward program. With swift approval, Miracle's surgery was scheduled. However, when the pre-anesthetic blood work results came back, we discovered a complication that required further investigation.

Thanks to the Paw It Forward program, we were able to conduct additional testing and provide the necessary medications. Our team worked diligently to develop a safe and effective surgical plan for Miracle.

One month later, Miracle underwent a successful surgical procedure and has since made a full recovery, much to the delight of his grateful owner!

We're incredibly proud to be a part of Miracle's journey to a healthier, happier life.

Sunny with a chance of ticks?

March is , a reminder that isn't just a seasonal concern.

can be active in temperatures as low as 4°C, meaning they can pose a risk even during winter months.

We encourage pet owners to remain vigilant year-round. This includes performing daily tick checks, understanding tick habitats, and consulting with your veterinarian about effective tick control measures.

Protect your pets from the potential dangers of ticks and tick-borne diseases with consistent, proactive care.

This week we had yet another team member’s pup in for a dental cleaning! Jude is almost 4 years old but has already started to accumulate some plaque and tartar on his teeth. Our dental cleanings are done under a general anesthesia where we x-ray the whole mouth to check for any hidden issues, followed by a full dental scaling and polishing done by our trained Registered Veterinary Technicians and a full mouth evaluation by our Veterinarian.

Jude’s before and after photos demonstrate the importance of early invention when it comes to dental disease as he now has a nice clean mouth along with a fresher breath!🦷🪥

Dental examinations are important not only to look for signs of dental disease but also for any abnormal lumps and bumps that may be hiding out. ❗️ 🦷 Goose was brought in for dental surgery by his owner and our Hospital Manager Ebony, when she noticed a mass that was rapidly growing on the inside of his mouth. He received a full dental cleaning as well as removal of the lump and four other smaller masses that were discovered at the time of surgery. We are happy to report Goose made a smooth recovery and his results showed that these are benign tumours meaning his surgery was a successful treatment.

You may not be able to ask your questions to find out what they're thinking, but there are some basic things you can do to ensure they are happy and healthy.

Start with a well-rounded diet and plenty of playtime to prevent any weight-gain or issues with obesity. A healthy weight helps avoid issues like diabetes and joint problems down the line.

🦷 Don't forget about their teeth—regular brushing and can make a big difference in preventing gum disease and tooth loss.

💧 is super important so make sure your cat is drinking enough water daily, or try some to help them out. Urinary tract problems can be a concern, especially in male cats, so keeping them hydrated and making sure the litter box stays clean is key.

🐈 Cats naturally need to shed the outer layer of their claws, and scratching helps them do that. By using a , they can safely shed old claw sheaths and keep their claws sharp and healthy. Without a proper outlet, cats may scratch furniture, carpets, or even themselves, potentially causing injury or damage.

As your cat ages, kidney health becomes more important, so regular visits will help catch any issues early. Watch for signs of diabetes, like excessive thirst or weight loss, and keep an eye on their food intake.

💡 Pro Tip: Make sure your cat gets their regular to stay protected.

Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for your pet's overall health and well-being.

Weight can be influenced by factors such as age, breed, health conditions, feeding routines, overfeeding, calorie-dense diets, inactivity, and genetics. To help your pet stay at a healthy weight, focus on these four simple steps.

🐕 Healthy Shape: Weighing them is not the only way to check if they're overweight. You can find out if your pet is a healthy weight by asking your veterinarian how to use the . The BCS is a 9-point system that evaluates physique, ranging from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (severely obese). An ideal score of 5 represents a healthy shape, where the ribs are easily felt, the waist is visible when viewed from above, and the abdomen tucks up behind the rib cage when viewed from the side.

🥎 Healthy Activity: Start by considering breed, as different breeds have unique energy levels and exercise needs. Likewise, your pet's age and health will play a key role in determining the right amount of activity for them. Regular exercise will ensure your pets keep fit, stay active and feel happy.

🥣 Healthy Portioning: They're smaller than you think! A good practice is to limit treats to less than 10% of your pet's daily calorie needs, which your veterinarian can help you determine. Then, reduce the amount of their regular food by an amount roughly equal to the calories contained in any treats given.

💗 Healthy Growth: As they grow, it’s essential to stay informed about changing needs at each stage of development. Consulting with your veterinarian and asking questions will ensure you feel confident in providing the care your pet requires as they mature.

Obesity may be the number one nutritional disorder of pets in North America, but it is also one that we can manage and monitor by utilizing systems like the BCS.

Together, we can make their life happier, healthier, and longer!
