Dog training is like riding a roller coaster
Now I know you are thinking “hot damn skippy, the sun has addled your brains”. But let me tell you how this applies to dog training. For many (most) of us, it would be very VERY hard to do calculus on a roller coaster never mind learning calculus on a roller coaster - even if we still remember how to do calculus! It doesn’t matter how many rewards we are getting (or punishments are being delivered) - we are probably going be unsuccessful - heck, I would be fail at even basic math on a roller coaster.
But I so often I see people asking their dogs to do just this. You might think “he can sit at home, he KNOWS how to sit, he’s just being stubborn here”. But often the problem is your dog is on the equivalent of their own personal roller coaster and can’t do what you are asking - in some cases they can’t even hear you.
I’m not saying you can’t do calculus on a roller coaster! But first, you’d probably need to be very good at calculus, and then practice on the fair grounds, then the merry-go-round, and then maybe the spinning tea-cups ride and get good there first. Dogs are the same. So the next time you are struggling, ask yourself: is my dog riding a roller coaster? If they are - help them off the ride safely, and start training where they are successful and go from there.
Remember: Remain seated and keep your arms and legs inside the car at all times.
Happy Training 💜

Are you an outdoorsy person? If you are, you know that good gear is worth its weight in gold. I started NRD because I think your dog’s gear should be just as well and thoughtfully made as yours. Yesterday, Ranger and Cricket’s Explore collars and leashes went from the lake to a mountain hike and then a quick stroll back to the trailhead without batting an eye. No muss no fuss.
Because our Explore Gear is made with Biothane - a waterproof, dirt proof and adventure ready coated webbing- their gear never stinks and is always ready for the next adventure.
We hope you get to spend some of your summer days exploring with your dog 💜

Just sitting in the shade on a sunny summer day making leashes and playing ball. The “behind the scenes” isn’t super exciting to watch, but I love it.
What are you up to today??

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day. A day to learn and celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
I honour and acknowledge that I live, work & play in the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Îyâxe Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations) and the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
This morning, I rode my bike to work through Nose Hill Park, traditional Blackfoot territory of the Blood Tribe. Today, I learned that this area was used for thousands of years as a lookout spot and the Siksikaitsitapi Medicine Wheel in the park is a tribute to the spiritual and historical connection with the land.

Teach your dog to take a selfie!
It’s Selfie Day so let’s train our dogs to take a selfie with us! This is a fun trick and great for all of those summer adventures. A couple of tips:
1. Start with a treat in each hand, use one hand to lure your dog around behind and the next to pop them up over your shoulder.
2. be patient, working behind you is probably a foreign concept to your dog
3. Once they are getting it you can start to remove the lure from your hand, but remember to reward your dog for getting it!
4. Add your cue in once you are ready to bet me $50 your dog will get it right.
5. Reps and practice! Try different places in your house, and then take it on the road 💙

Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers and father figures 💜
Why doesn’t your dog come when called? This is a question I always ask in my training classes before we start training recall. I get lots of great answers and they can be summed up in a few ways:
1. Your dog is distracted by something, something else in the environment is more relevant to them
2. Coming when called has ended badly for them in the past: the fun ended, they got in trouble, they had a bath, you put on your shoes and went to work for the day etc.
3. The one that people always miss - your dog don’t actually know what “Fido Come!” means.
So what do you need to do? Train!
1. Set your dog up for success, practice recall in low distraction environments and reward the heck out of every single success. Don’t be stingy, reward in hundred dollars bills 💵 (the dog equivalent, of course)
2. When they do come in training (and they will, because you are setting them up for success) reward them, and then (as much as possible) give them their cue to go back to doing dog stuff. They’ll learn that coming when they’re called doesn’t end the fun every time.
3. Don’t call them when you know they won’t come - you are just teaching them to ignore the cue - instead train up to the level of distraction that you need.
4. Practice calling them only ONCE when you train. Your dog doesn’t speak english, they don’t know if they cue is “COME” or “comecomecomecomecomecome”
Remember practice makes perfect - practicing your recall isn’t something you can do too much of!
