Bishop training for our first ever Sprinters trial this Sunday Having a solid recall is essential to being a responsible pet owner and for participating in dog sports.
Rule Number One - To condition an immediate response only say your dogs name and Recall cue ONCE.
Rule Number Two - What gets rewarded, Gets repeated. ALWAYS reward the recall with praise, play, and/or treats.
Rule Number Three - NEVER immediately follow a recall with something the dog dislikes. Instead spend at least 30 seconds interacting pleasantly with your dog then follow up with 30 seconds of calmness before you have to âdo the thingâ.
August Class Schedule
Out and About Fido - (returning dogs) starting August 7 at 7pm
Puppy Primer - Starting Aug 8 at 6pm ( 2 spots available)
Private Lessons - Available every Tuesday afternoon
Let's talk about car sickness
The main reason puppies get car sick is because the ear structures used for balance arenât fully developed yet. Car sickness usually resolves on its own in the first year of life unless the puppy becomes conditioned to equate traveling with stress and vomiting. If this happens motion sickness can continue even after their ears have fully matured.
Things that can make it worse are stop and go traffic, going on and off exit ramps and having to make turns.
The way I handle it while I give the ear structure time to develop is by;
Keeping both excitement and stress levels to a minimum in the car,
Giving a meaty raw soup bone or a stuffed kong to keep the puppy occupied,
Throwing random treats in the puppies direction,
Trying to take the most direct route that avoids twists, curves and stop and go traffic,
Keeping the vehicle as cool as possible,
Bringing along a car savvy dog to set an example,
Having a passenger play simple low key training games with the puppy which gives me the opportunity of sharing this video with you all.
How do you work through car sickness?
Training tip the Collar Grab; the Collar Grab is a training game that can help prevent our dogs from becoming hand shy or from playing a game of keep away when we are trying to put on the leash. Just two minutes per training session can give our dogs feel good emotions turning them into dogs who will seek out our stretched hand!
Take 10 treats and simply start by touching the collar or neck with one hand and delivering a treat with the opposite hand.
1. Take ahold of the collar or Touch the neck for soft dogs â 2. Mark with your verbal reward Marker or Clicker â 3. Deliver the treat while holding the collar â 4. Release the collar after you have given the treat.
All in that order. It is consecutive not concurrent. Repeat after a brief play break but don't over train in any one session.
Whether you do it at home, out and about your neighbourhood, at the cottage or in sporting trials, give your dog the gift of using their natural abilities in a constructive manner. You will enjoy it and your dogs, well they will LOVE it. ODOR PAYS; Intro to Imprinting Target Odor

Lovely puppies and dedicated owners adding distance to their Sit Stays.
I love how Finn makes good choices to pay attention to Lauren instead of getting caught up in barking.
Linda is getting some nice distance but keeps the duration nice and short to set Sasha up for success.
Nel is such an awesome little bundle of joy, with Jean's calm energy Nel has a nice balance of enthusiasm and focus.
