It's heating up outside 🌞 Some things to remember to keep your pets safe:
Never leave pets in hot vehicles!!! 🚗The inside of a car can reach deadly temperatures in a matter of minutes, even with the windows cracked.
Walk your dogs in the early morning or late evening to avoid the hottest part of the day, hot pavement = hot paws. 🐾
💧Stay hydrated and carry cool water with you for your pet. Avoid Stainless water bowls as these can heat up in the sun.
Make sure your pets have access to shady areas to relax🌳
**** Keep your pets safe! Know the signs of an overheating pet! ****

In light of social media attention, we at Shannondale Pet Hospital thought it would be a good idea to address some concerns that you, as pet owners, may have about the current flea and tick medications being recommended for your pets.
There is a class of drug called Isoxazoline. This class of drug includes Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica. It is important to note that any medication can have side effects, even something like Tylenol can cause liver failure and difficulty breathing, yet how many people safely take Tylenol every day. Side effects are rare.
We typically recommend Simparica/Simparica Trio as our flea and tick product and it has been tested at 1X, 3X and 5X the recommended dosage and proved to be safe. However, the FDA has put out a notice that some dogs, who have had a product from the Isoxazoline class (not necessarily Simparica) have had some seizure-like activity. This includes tremors, ataxia, and seizures. These side effects are very rare. There has been a very large online presence talking about how these medications are harmful to pets. The information presented is often without context, with no note of the pets past history or current health conditions. A healthy dog on the outside, may have ongoing conditions that may have not been noticed or become severe enough to cause symptoms. We do research every individual pets needs for parasite prevention and review their medical history and lifestyle before making a recommendation.
There is a significant risk from ticks in our area and we believe these products are the best protection we can offer. Without these products, our pets are exposed to the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis. Symptoms of these diseases can range from mild to fatal.
They can include
-fever, swollen limbs, respiratory distress, weight loss, anorexia, neurological imbalances and seizures, meningitis, anemia, bone marrow failure (new blood cells cannot be made), spontaneous bleeding due to lack of platelets, blindness, joint pain, ocular hemorrhage, kidney disease, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Our hospital feels confident in the recommendation of these products and the sale of them from our clinic. What we cannot speak towards, is the buying and selling of these products through online pet pharmacies. There are several pharmacies that although seem like legitimate sources, are actually selling counterfeit products that look 100% like the real medication. These products are not safe to use on your pets. The companies that we get our Parasite Prevention medications from back the product 100% and will stand behind their product and help you with any concerns you may have. If you think your pet has had a reaction or side effect from any of the medications prescribed by the Shannondale Pet Hospital, please reach out to us!
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 705-752-4777.

We hope you enjoy your treats and personalized treat container Zeke!🐾
We have had some concerned pet parents call to see what precautions they need to take with their pets and the eclipse. The dangers associated with looking at the sun during the eclipse are not due to the eclipse itself, but rather due to our staring directly into the sun. This can cause us to see spots and if we stare long enough, can cause damage to our eyes. Pets do not make a habit of staring directly at the sun during a normal sunny day, so they are unlikely to even notice when the eclipse happens. Rest assured that there is no additional risk to your pets during the eclipse compared to a regular day. If you have any other questions or concerns, please let us know!
Here is our Easter holiday hours! 🐰

It is International Woman's Day!
The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion.
When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world.
And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.
Collectively, let's forge a more inclusive world for women.
When women aren't present, we must ask: "If not, why not?"
When women are discriminated against, we must call out poor practice.
When the treatment of women is not equitable, we must take action.
And we must do this each time, every time.
There is a slight adjustment to our opening hours for this Thursday March 7,2024.
On Thursday, we will be hosting a continuing education seminar aimed at enhancing our team's expertise and knowledge to better serve you. In light of this, our office will open at 9:30 am instead of the usual 8:30 am.
Please rest assured that this temporary change in operating hours will not affect our commitment to providing you with exceptional service. We value your business and aim to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.
Monday's are Ruff ... I think I'll leave this book for the dogtor 😝

Ticks are NOT killed by the cold winter weather. Tick time is anytime the temperature is above freezing (0°C). We have all been enjoying these mild weather days - but so have ticks! Protect your pet today!
It's National Peanut Butter Day!
We know your dogs are all drooling for the spoonful today!
Peanut butter is a favorite for many and can be used to fill Kong toys for fun, or as a distraction to help with nail trims and baths. Before giving peanut butter to your dog be sure to check the ingredients list for any artificial sweeteners specifically xylitol or birch sugar, as dogs cannot have these!
