While the information contained in this book focuses on Conception Bay’s North Shore and Grates Coves, Trinity Bay, it is comparable to other rural and one-time remote outport communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador during the mid-1800s to mid-1900s. As such, this book should be of interest to a wide range of individuals. It is anticipated that readers from NL will enjoy the opportunity to revisit and reminisce about local culture and traditions whilst others will see rural NL in a way they may never have seen or read about before.
This book was inspired by the writer’s experiences of growing up in Northern Bay during the 1960’s and 1970’s, her family’s generational history of living in the North Shore communities of Northern Bay, Western Bay, and Gull Island, and the stories that were told by her parents, grandparents, and community elders.
Although many traditions and celebrations are not held on the same scale they once were, there continues to be pride and regard for maintaining many of them. To that end, motivation in capturing stories, lore, and ballads from the North Shore and Grates Cove and including them in a book comes from the writer’s belief in the importance of documenting, preserving, and celebrating local history, traditions, and cultural ways of living so that future generations will remember them.
Given the rich heritage found on the North Shore and Grates Cove and the vast number of stories, lore, and ballads found in its geographical area/s, a second book is currently being written and expected to be published in 2025.
