⚠️ With lots of information floating around recently due to the current EHV-1 outbreak occuring in the United States, we have been receiving a lot of questions about the safety of our horses here in Ontario. While these cases are geographically very distanced from us, it is important for all horse owners to be aware and up to date on current information regarding EHV-1. We are very excited to announce that we officially have our own in house blood analyzers!🩸 This upgrade allows us to run a variety of diagnostics, right here on site. These machines analyze blood samples for a complete blood cell count and biochemistry panel. This means we can look at red and white blood cell counts, platelets, liver and kidney function, electrolyte levels, muscle enzymes and more. We are excited to add this to our tool kit to provide our clients with same day results when it matters most! 🩹❤️

In addition to these machines, we also offer in house blood analysis with same day results for SAA (infection/inflammation marker in horses), Insulin, Glucose, IgG (newborn foal antibody levels) and Lactate (helpful tool in diagnosing colic). 🐴

Faster answers mean faster treatment decisions - helping us care for your horses with even greater accuracy and efficiency. We are thrilled to bring this update to our herd and yours! 🩸💨✅

Winter is coming and it can be a challenging time of year for horses! 🧊🥶 Here is a winter essentials checklist to ensure your horse stays healthy during the colder months:

- Weight: Monitor their body condition score closely, horses burn more calories during the colder months to stay warm! Use the standardized body condition score chart below to see where your horse falls. Ideal score going into the winter would be around a 5/9. If you notice any changes, especially weight loss, give your veterinarian a call. 5️⃣📞

- Deworming: Ensure your horse is up to date with a fall/winter deworming. Submitting a f***l for a f***l egg count test can help to determine a targeted treatment plan. 🪱💩

- Dental: Ensuring your horse is up to date on their annual dental exam and float before winter is extremely important to ensure they are able to properly chew forage to get all the nutrients they require. Many horses as they age may require more frequent floating to maximize chewing ability. 🦷🌾

- Hydration: Horses tend to consume less water during colder weather. Studies have shown that horses will drink more if offered warm water during the winter months. Check waters daily to make sure they haven't frozen. To encourage extra drinking, give your horse 1-2 tablespoons of loose salt per day. Ensuring your horse stays well hydrated will help to decrease the risk of impaction colic. 💦🧂

- Nutrition: Ensure your horse always has access to good quality hay. Getting your hay tested can tell you if your horse is getting all of the nutrients it needs from your current hay supply. Feed extra hay during extreme cold temperatures to help keep your horse warm. Warm soupy hay cubes/mashes can be a great additive during the colder months to get extra water and calories into them. 🌾🥣

- Movement: Horses tend to remain in one place and move around less during colder weather. Encouraging movement and exercise will increase gut motility and reduce edema (swelling). 🏃🏇

- Hoof Care: Check your horses feet daily to remove packed in ice or snow and check for thrush. Ask your farrier if your horse may benefit from shoes, pads or snow pads when the ground hardens. 🐴❄️

- Husbandry: Ensure your horse has access to shelter that provides windbreaks and dry footing while outside. Continue regular turnout as much as possible for mental and physical health, but use caution in icy conditions. Blanket as needed based on lifestyle (indoor vs. outdoor), coat thickness, body condition, age and weather. Avoid over blanketing and ensure blankets are well fitted and dry. Senior horses and thinner horses lose heat faster, so may benefit from blanketing to help keep warmth and body weight. 🏠🧥

Prevention is the best medicine! Catching things early can be very beneficial to your horse's wellbeing ⏰. Senior horses or thinner horses are at higher risk in the winter so monitor them closely!🔍 Do twice daily checks for:
- Appetite, water intake, manure output 🌾💦💩
- Blanket fit, injuries, body condition 🧥🩹
- Behaviour changes ☹️

Be prepared!
- Keep a first aid handy and fully stocked 🩹
- Ensure you have access to water and feed/hay incase of power outage or inclement weather 💡❄️
- Post veterinary and farrier contact information in the barn incase of emergencies 🩺📞

If you have any questions or concerns about your horse, give us a call at 226-755-0785 or email at [email protected]. Stay warm! 🕯️🧤

❗️Preventive Care Reminder!🐴

Humans aren't the only species that require dental care 🦷. An annual dental exam and float play's an essential role in your horses routine care to keep them healthy!✨ A sedated dental exam and float is important as it allows our veterinarian's to safely and thoroughly inspect all aspects of your horse's mouth - especially areas that may otherwise be difficult to see or treat without sedation. Annual floats help to prevent pain while eating, weight loss and even training issues! 👍

🦷Healthy mouth = happy horse = happy owner!😁

*Pictures contain blood*

This brave guy is one lucky patient! 🙌🩹He sustained a severe neck laceration just millimeters away from the jugular vein and carotid artery. Thanks to quick action by the owner, Dr. Cristina was able to get there right away and suture it back together🪡
He made a wonderful recovery and is happily back to being a show horse! 🏆🐴

This is an appreciation post!! October is Veterinary Technician appreciation month and we have two OUTSTANDING RVTs on our team.
Veterinary Technicians are the heart of animal care. Their skill, compassion, and dedication is tangible for each and every one of our patients. They educate clients, navigate on the road, provide emotional support for our patients, clients, and sometimes us! From running blood work, to assisting during life saving procedures, they do it all — often behind the scenes, but always with unwavering care. Veterinary medicine simply wouldn’t be possible without them.

Taylor, your dedication towards your work, our team, and our clients and their beloved horses is unmatched. Thank you!
Brooke, your stellar energy, constant willingness to try new things, and lively attitude are integral to this team. Thank you!
