TEST YOUR DOG'S P**P! 💩💩💩 This is something (at minimum) which should be done at each annual wellness exam (most pet parents for whatever reason are not aware of this so do not bring a poo sample)! Most healthy dogs who have parasites do NOT show symptoms. If you have ongoing annual checkups and regular care established with your pup at the vet, an appointment is not (should not) be required to simply test poo. Now, of course, if your dog is not acting well, bringing the dog along for an exam, along with a stool sample is the best option.

For boarding I require negative f***l test within the last 6 months. It is crazy to see how many dogs test POSITIVE and the owners do NOT know their dogs have an internal parasite. I have seen over the last few years the number of positive tests rise significantly. More and more people are traveling with their dogs (which is great, but increases exposure) - board & train, boarding, grooming, day care, training, in home boarding, dog walkers / dog in home travel care, shows/trials, dog parks etc are a sure way to get your pup exposed to internal (and external) parasites.

If the place you take your dog/s to for boarding/grooming/training/day care etc does NOT require a f***l test, I would recommend you go somewhere else. Or, if you feel comfortable, ask the owner to consider adding it as a requirement. This is a simple way to protect your dog and others from spreading internal parasites, which noone wants their dogs to have. If not caught early, or in a dog who is already not 100% healthy, it can lead to serious problems quickly - esp older and younger dogs.

Some monthly heartworm preventatives can eliminate some of these parasites (round/whip/tape/hook) - but I would not rely on that 100% - it just takes one pill taken late, or forgotten, or puked up for your dog to not be covered after exposure - I have seen dogs on heartworm preventative still be positive for some of these parasites too. There are no heartworm meds that cover giardia and coccidia that I am aware of and these internal parasites are far too common! Some of these can be transmitted to humans!

Note - be sure to let your vet know you would like your dog/s poo to be checked for giardia (most standard methods (float and smear) are not always accurate for giardia, and some techs are not trained or have as much experience to find giardia using that method) - the most thorough way to test for giardia is the “ELISA” test.

So PLEASE GET YOUR DOGS P**P TESTED! 🐾🥰💩

If you do have to treat your dog for any internal parasite - be sure to add healthy probiotics! Plain Greek yogurt is fantastic - otherwise I can suggest some options too. And of course, ALWAYS retest your dog's poo to ensure you did get rid of it. A deep cleaning of all bedding, flooring, crates/kennels, yard etc is obviously a must too - and always pickup poo asap from your yard.
