Electra came in today to get her dental work up done. She had fractured canines to the extent that the pulp was exposed. She needed extraction to relieve her from pain and make her comfortable.
Tooth fractures are very common in dogs and can happen from chewing on their toys or bones. Minor tooth fractures can lead to sensitive teeth while major tooth fractures with exposed pulp can lead to severe pain, infection developing on affected tooth and aggressive behaviour as well.
As our furry friends are masters at hiding pain most of the fractures go unnoticed. For this reason it is imperative that regular checkups are done by the veterinarian.
If you are suspecting a tooth fracture in your pal please make appointment ASAP.

Today , we have Kevin coming to us after getting into some fabric and tampon. After our initial exam we did X-rays and noticed some foreign material in the stomach. We induce vomiting and Kevin vomited tampoon and chewed fabric material. We were lucky that foreign body came out with vomiting , otherwise it would have lead us to surgery to remove the material from stomach.
It is reminder for all of us to make sure that garbage bins are properly locked to prevent any such accidents.

Do you know the difference between sedation and general anesthesia? Sedation refers to a state where the patient is calm and relaxed and may or may not be conscious. Sedation is typically used for shorter (up to 30 minutes), less-invasive veterinary procedures such as diagnostic imaging, joint injections, suture removal, and wound management. Injectable sedation is short-acting, and with most sedatives, a reversal agent can be given once the procedure is complete. This agent reverses the effects of the sedative on the central nervous system and can provide quick recovery within 15-20 minutes after injection.

On the other hand, anesthesia produces a loss of consciousness. General anesthesia is typically used for longer, more invasive procedures such as surgery or dental cleanings. When a pet is under general anesthesia, they are connected to an anesthetic machine, and a tube is placed through their mouth into the trachea to allow oxygen and the inhalant anesthetic to be dispersed as the patient breathes.
