Thresholds are so important for safety. We always teach this to every dog we work with. The expectation is to sit and wait for permission to exit. We look for offered eye contact and duration with the door open / closed. We even practice the human coming in and out while they hold their sit. This can be implemented in so many aspects such as the kennel, crosswalks, the front door (door dashers) creating boundaries within the home such as not wanting your dog to access certain rooms of your home etc.
You can’t expect your dog to naturally choose your expectations, after all they’re a dog. It’s important for us to show our dogs what we want from them in literally every single interaction with have with them! Over time with repetition the goal is that our dog will naturally offer these behaviours because it gets them what they want in the long run, plus it provides so much more freedom!

I know this should go in the “obvious” category, but I’m amazed by how often both sides can miss this simple truth.

Trainers, be crystal clear with clients BEFORE you begin a training relationship which tools and methods you’ll be using, as well as the work that will be required using said tools and methods AFTER training.

Owners, if your trainer obtained results that you enjoy and would like to make permanent, I highly suggest you do precisely what the trainer recommends, and also use precisely which tools they recommend.

As I always tell clients if they ask about deviating from the program or the recommended tools post-training: “You can absolutely change whatever you desire. Just know that every deviation creates the possibility of behavioral deviation as well.”

Trainers, allow owners to be responsible adults, and let them make their own decisions—with full knowledge of what those decisions might create. If you’re trying to convince or coerce your clients, you’ve made several mistakes, and are still making them.

Owners, hold your trainers accountable for ensuring that you clearly understand and know how to properly utilize the tools and methods they used. Once that’s achieved, any deviations are on you. But you knew that already. 😉

Place command is a fantastic way to provide clear boundaries for a dog of any age. We teach this fairly young by making this spot a positive safe space for the dog.
I expect my dog to stay in this space unless given another command. When my dog is on place I advocate for their space by not allowing anyone to interact with them. (including other pets)
We reward heavily in the beginning to encourage the dog and from there it is a process of veritable rewards and a lot of consistency within our expectations.
Place command helps teach impulse control, self regulation as well as how to co-exist peacefully. I couldn’t imagine our multi dog household without solid place commands.

Remember that training is a series of different steps in order to create desirable behaviours or to unlearn and change unwanted behaviours. There is no quick fix!
