It is that time of year again!

Animals from the Discovery Passage Aquarium are going home. We are inviting 2024 members to assist with releases. There are limited spaces so email us soon!

Members of the public who are not aquarium members are still welcome to attend and watch our releases.

The Discovery Passage Aquarium is closed today to honour and acknowledge National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Our facilities facilities and educational activities take place primarily in the traditional and unceded territory of the Ligwiłda’xw people; the We Wai Kai, Wei Wai K*m, and Kwiakah First Nations. We honour their stewardship of the lands and waters of this region and we pledge to continue to work towards building our relationship.

We had the fortune of bumping into Mack from in Campbell River today!

The Discovery Passage Aquarium opens to the public on May 18 with a wide range of marine species to visit at their aquarium, summer camps hosted in their Explorer Lab at the adjoining Marine Heritage Centre in July and August, and also offers year-round school programs.

This Wednesday join us for a sea star survey at Willow Point Reef! Dress warm and come see the amazing biodiversity of Campbell River at night!

Next Monday, join our beach clean up! We aim to clean 1km of CR shoreline each month, and this month we are tackling FoggDukkers to (approximately) Big Rock!

Happy Holidays!

Join our shoreline clean up on January 3rd for all those benefits and more!

We will be meeting at the Rotary Beach Park along the sea walk at 2 PM. We will supply garbage bags, buckets, gloves and a few tongs to participants.

We are hiring!

The Discovery Passage Aquarium is expanding our horizons with multiple projects and the goal of integrating Indigenous history, science, and knowledge into our exhibits and our library of educational resources.
The Indigenous Content Specialist will help us document the names and traditional uses of local marine species, and work with local Indigenous knowledge keepers and other partners to acquire and record the names of species in Kwak’wala, Liq’wala, and/or ayʔaǰuθɛm.

The rest of the winter sea star survey schedule is here!

Next up: Monday, December 11th at 10PM

During these surveys, we look for ochre stars with sea star wasting disease, and send the data to the University of California, assisting with their tracking of the disease from Alaska to Baja California!

As says: it’s the season of the sticks (covered in styrofoam)

Winter storms bring big waves that wash up marine debris and styrofoam, and break it into tiny little pieces. This is bad news for small fish, invertebrates and birds that might think these are tasty treats.

If you want to help us keep Campbell River’s beaches clean, sign up for one of our monthly beach clean ups! Or next time you’re heading to the beach, bring a container to pick up a few pieces of trash. Every little bit helps!!

We have a busy winter ahead of us! Starting off strong this November, we have a beach clean, a sea star survey and a weekend-long open house at the Explorer Lab!

Next weekend, Nov. 17-19, we will have our gift shop items for sale at the Explorer Lab, as well as 2024 season passes!

Our November beach clean will be taking place on Wednesday Nov. 22 at 10am. We will be meeting at the lower parking lot of the Anchor Inn.

Late night sea star surveys are starting up again! Sunday Nov. 26th, we will meet at Jaycee Park at 10pm. If you plan on attending, please sign up through our bio link. This allows us to contact you if there are any changes to the plan.
