Tick season is upon us!

These pesky buggers are active in temperatures above 4 degrees Celsius 🌞.

To help protects your pets, yourselves, and your family:
1. Start your dogs and cats on tick control medication for the duration of the tick risk season. If your pet is on a veterinary-approved tick medication, such as Bravecto, the ticks that have attached to your pet will die before getting the chance to transmit tick-borne diseases. 🩺💊
2. Avoid tall grass and leaf litter, and stay on cleared pathways during walks and hikes 🌲🍂🏔⛺️
3. Perform daily tick checks on your pets and on yourselves 🧐
4. If you find a tick, bring it to the clinic and we will submit it to the eTick surveillance program for identification. 🔬

Call us for tick control medication today, at 403-678-9595!

Alfie also graduated from puppy socialization class with honours! 🎓

This wonderful pup bursts with energy! She is not afraid of anything and loves to play with all of the other puppies. She lost a few teeth while wrestling/playing, but nothing phased her. She also grew a whole kilogram in a week. Being a Basset Hound mixed breed does not stop her legs from continuing to grow!

Most tooth fractures occur when dogs are given chew toys that are too hard. Some veterinary dentists recommend the “kneecap test” when choosing your dog’s next dental chew. If your pet would resent being hit on the kneecap with the chew or treat, it’s too hard for them to chew on. Talk to our veterinary team to discuss your pet’s dental health!

Miso had a diseased molar that was originally noted on his head CT scan!

Last week, he underwent a COHAT (a.k.a. dental); this included a thorough oral examination, full mouth radiographs, and ultrasonic scaling and polishing of the teeth. From the radiographic images, his veterinarian noted two diseased teeth that required extraction.

Complete intra-oral radiographs are a crucial part of dental/oral procedures to assess the degree of periodontal disease and the health of the roots and surrounding bone/ligament, which are not visible to the naked eye.

It's dental month!

As tartar build ups and the gums become increasingly inflamed, chronic infection sets in causing bone loss and the destruction of the ligament supporting the tooth. Tooth extraction is indicated in most cases- this can get costly.

To prevent this disease process, we recommend routine oral exams and professional cleanings (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment or COHAT). These help to maximize your pet's quality of life and save you money in the long run.

Call us at 403-678-9595 to book a pre-COHAT examination and ask us how we're celebrating dental month!

01/26/2024

While your pet’s mouth may be free of signs of advanced dental disease such as loose or broken teeth and look relatively ‘normal’, the gunk on their teeth is just the tip of the dental iceberg. Often bad breath may be the only sign of an issue. Dental disease that lurks under the gumline can compromise your pet’s overall health, comfort, longevity, quality of life, and the way they enjoy time with you. Learn how to help slow the course of dental disease in your pet.

The staff at Bow River Veterinary Centre and our furry friends are joining the conversation for Day. Every person and paw counts in breaking the stigma around mental health. Let's talk, listen, and support each other, regardless of whether we are four-legged or two-legged.

Our furry friends are such important parts of our lives. Our kitties' loud purrs, soft gazes, clumsy leaps, and funny quirks, and our dogs' wagging tails, wet slurps, comical antics, and their stares full of anticipation are forever missed when they leave us. Let's not discount the love and companionship we feel from our ferret, hamster, gerbil, guinea pig, bearded dragon, snake, tortoise, arachnid, fish, and many more.

If you are struggling with your pet's illness or are grieving the loss of your dearest furry loved one, please reach out to us. We're always hear for you.
