Tick season is upon us!
These pesky buggers are active in temperatures above 4 degrees Celsius 🌞.
To help protects your pets, yourselves, and your family:
1. Start your dogs and cats on tick control medication for the duration of the tick risk season. If your pet is on a veterinary-approved tick medication, such as Bravecto, the ticks that have attached to your pet will die before getting the chance to transmit tick-borne diseases. 🩺💊
2. Avoid tall grass and leaf litter, and stay on cleared pathways during walks and hikes 🌲🍂🏔⛺️
3. Perform daily tick checks on your pets and on yourselves 🧐
4. If you find a tick, bring it to the clinic and we will submit it to the eTick surveillance program for identification. 🔬
Call us for tick control medication today, at 403-678-9595!

Hunter is a lovely German Shepherd Dog who likes to fish for rocks when the lakes are thawed. Her human initially noted the fractured canine tooth, and requested to have it assessed by our veterinarian. Watch our video to learn how the fractured tooth was assessed, treated, and how Hunter did after her oral surgery!

While ear mites are occasionally encountered external parasites at our practice, skin mites are not so common, thanks to regular preventative anti-parasitics that also happen to target skin mites!
Sarcoptes scabiei is the itch mite that causes Sarcoptic mange, also known as scabies. These microscopic critters cause intense itching leading to scratching and thickened/darkened skin. They can lead to secondary bacterial or yeast infections in the damaged skin.
Because these mites burrow into the skin, superficial and deep skin scrapings need to be performed on the lesions and assessed under the microscope.
Sarcoptic mites are highly contagious to other pets and can also be passed on to humans. A person may experience intense itching and skin rashes. Luckily, the mites cannot survive on humans, so they will die a few days later.
Thankfully, treatment is straightforward! Your typical flea/tick preventative medication is mite-y efficient at ridding pets of these pesky guys!
Even in the dead of winter, regular anti-parasitics are an important part of your furry companion’s wellbeing (and yours)! Call us if you’re getting itchy 🙈.

In celebration of dental month, let’s talk oral health!
Did you know that frequent teeth brushing, good chewing habits, proper diet, and annual professional oral examinations all play a crucial role in keeping your pet’s oral hygiene under check?
When teeth are not tended to, tartar builds up over time leading to inflammation of the gums. In the later stages of dental disease, infection develops, teeth become loose from bone loss, and lengthy procedures involving tooth extractions are required.
Teeth brushing is best taught early on in a puppy and kitten’s life, but it can also be taught to adult and older animals, with patience, consistency, and lots of reward!
Not certain where to start? Book a complimentary appointment with one of our qualified technicians to discuss your pet’s oral health!

Adopting a new kitten? Don’t forget to check their ears!
If you notice your cat scratching at their ears, shaking their head, or dark build up in their ears, it is recommended to have them looked at. They might have ear mites, like this guy here. Ear mites are easily treated but also easily contagious to other cats, so all of the household must be treated.
