Today marks 365 days that Bedard has been in our care. Bedard is many things. Bedard is a lap-snuggler, a belly rub enthusiast, and a lover of all people. He’s a high-drive, highly enthusiastic dog who is motivated, eager to please, and has a “can do” attitude toward anything you throw at him. He’s sometimes too smart for his own good, but this also means he’s a pro when it comes to learning new things (he has his basic commands, is crate trained, housetrained, has placement training, and knows plenty of endearing tricks). He’s a fetch-master, an agility superstar, and he hasn’t met a puzzle toy he can’t solve. Bedard is a dog that at one point in his life, had to fight to survive, and so is naturally unsure of other dogs, and defensive of his space around them. But despite that, Bedard is a dog who has worked so hard to tackle his big feelings, and has made tremendous progress toward neutrality around other dogs and decreasing his reactivity. Bedard has proven himself to be calm in a home environment, and has worked sooo hard on his impulse control and manners that he is now one of our most polite pups. Bedard will be your adventure buddy rain, snow, or shine, and thrives when he has a job to do (such as carrying his own hiking backpack filled with toys and water, because he’ll also be your sidekick in life). But most of all, Bedard is a loving dog who wants to please his people, and is deserving of a forever home that cares for and accepts him for all his charms and quirks. To that person, they won’t find a more loyal dog 🐾🧡Can’t adopt Bedard but want to help him out? Share this post to help us find his people - we know they’re out there and he’s ready and waiting to find them. Help us use the power of social media to find this great dog a home!
As we enter the New Year, we want to pause to reflect on 2023 and all that our community of supporters, staff, adopters, volunteers and donors have helped us to achieve. It is because of you that the Bow Valley SPCA continues to be able to care for and rehome abandoned dogs and cats and spread the message, and reward, of responsible pet ownership in the Bow Valley. Thank you for helping us “Bring a Little Love” over the last 12 months. Please take a moment to watch our video celebrating the Class of 2023 - all the animals that have found their forever homes in 2023 thanks to all of you! With sincere gratitude and best wishes for 2024, Lisa McDowell President

We’ve talked before about how Benji needs proper introductions in order to trust new humans, but you may wonder what this practically looks like. For one, it looks much different than even a few months ago, because Benji has made huge strides toward trusting new humans! Benji is muzzle trained, but he no longer requires a muzzle to meet new people, and rather than being uncomfortable, Benji is starting to get excited about making new friends. Benji feels most comfortable meeting new humans outside, where he doesn’t feel cornered. We allow him to approach new people in his own time, and keep moving so that he has the option to interact or not. His handler gives him lots of treats to sweeten the deal and form a positive association. After only a few times meeting someone new in this manner, you will be part of Benji’s crew of besties! Benji has no problems cruising past people out on the trails or sidewalk, and while he will need a home without kids (their energy is overwhelming to him), he has really broadened his social circle lately and we are so proud of his bravery! It is well worth the time to get to know Benji, because you will be rewarded with a lifelong loving best friend and loyal sidekick. Benji’s Christmas wish is for a forever home of his own, so get in touch with any questions about this loving boy!

Help Benji Find His Forever Home!
Please share to help Benji find his forever home! At the end of this month, Benji will have been in our care for one full year, and we think it’s about time that he finds his forever home! Benji has struggled to find his people because he is wary of strangers, but once you are in his trusted circle (after a few walks, respecting his space until he is comfortable, and bribery with hot dogs), he is the most sweet, loyal, loving, and gentle boy. Benji is looking for an experienced and patient dog owner that will put his needs first, and would LOVE to have another doggie friend to help him feel safe! Please share to help spread the word that Benji is here waiting for a loving home to call his own! If you are interested in Benji, head to our website to check out his bio, or dm us your questions about this handsome, loving boy!
