Reminder to all of our current clients that we will be temporarily closing our boarding services starting in December, 2024, for the year of 2025. The last day for daycare, before the new year, will be December 20th, 2024, then we close for the holiday season. We will be extending this closure a few weeks until the beginning of February 2025, when we will reopen (just daycare).
Also, for perspective clients, with our pending leave and reduced available services, we are continuing to not take any new clients at this time. Thanks all 🐾❤️

Hunting season is upon us! Make sure you and your dog are wearing your blaze orange 🧡

The Valley has so many excellent "off road" trails to explore with your dog , but this time of year we urg you to make sure you know where you are walking and be aware that hunting seasons is upon us.

TIPS for keeping you and your dog safe while still enjoying nature's finest:

🍁Check the calendar - know the hunting season opening and closing dates for where you live.
(Deer hunting season for muzzleloaders and crossbows began Sept. 28th with general deer rifle season opening Oct. 30th until Dec 5th)

🍁Be visible and draw attention to you and your dog by wearing orange, reflective gear, lights, and/or bells.

🍁Ensure your dog will respond to recall commands if they are off leash, or better yet, keep your dog leashed at all times during this time of year when out on trails.

🍁Make sure you know where you are walking and plan an alternate route in case you notice there are hunters in the immediate area.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a condition commonly referred to as bloat. This is a critical medical issue for dogs, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Bloat happens when gas or food stretches a dog's stomach. The distended stomach rotates, trapping the gas inside, and blocking off the stomach's blood supply. This can develop quickly, without warning, and requires immediate medical attention.

Here are a few ways you can help prevent bloat:

🐶 Encourage your dog to eat slowly
🐶 Feed smaller controlled portions
🐶 Don’t feed them right after exercise or when over-excited/panting heavily
🐶 Keep them at a healthy weight

If you suspect your dog has bloat, contact Maritime at (902) 932-0838.

It always seems like as soon as the calendar turns from August to September, fall is immediately in the air! And with it comes concerns about leptospirosis.

Although it is possible to contract leptospirosis in any season it is far more prevalent in the autumn. Leptospirosis (often referred to as lepto) is a bacteria that is most commonly shed through urine of wild animals, with raccoons and rats being big sources. Puddles and other stagnant pools of water can contain leptospirosis, so not allowing your dog to drink from these and cleaning their paws after walking may limit exposure. Since wildlife spreads lepto, it can be found in the woods, city streets or even your own backyard through contaminated soil or water.

There is more than one strain of leptospirosis and since it can attack different systems in the body, not all symptoms are the same for all dogs. Some signs you may see with initial onset :

- Vomiting

- Diarrhea

- Fever

- Inappetance ( refusal to eat)

- Stiffness/seems painful/reluctant to move easily

- Weakness/lethargy/lack of energy

- " Not himself/herself"

Remember that not all dogs display all symptoms.

Vaccines are available. The vaccine does not protect against all strains but it is the very best protection possible for our canine friends. The time to vaccinate is BEFORE leptospirosis season, so check with your family veterinary team to see if your dog is up to date or if vaccinating is the right choice for your dog. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

It is still possible to contract lepto even with vaccines. As well, it is important to note that lepto is a zoonotic disease - that means it is transmissable to humans. Lepto can be fatal. Early treatment gives the best chance of a successful recovery, so if you suspect your dog may have leptospirosis contact your veterinary team or the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic immediately.
