When you're dripping sweat doing farm chores, remember that your horse is many times hotter than you! 🥵

Salt plays a critical role in maintaining water balance in cells, and is also rapidly lost when horses sweat. Dehydrated horses will actually drink LESS as their electrolyte balance causes an impairment to their thirst response.

A few key points to remember in nutrition when the heat waves start to hit this summer:

➡ Adding salt and electrolytes (particularly in athletes) is essential to help replace these after sweating events.

➡ Fresh, cool water should always be available. Yes, fresh and cool means probably having to replace frequently (but your horse will thank you so very much!).

➡ Eating concentrates and forages produces more heat internally, so your horse may not be finishing up meals or eating as much because of this. Still keep forage in front of them always, and plan to feed concentrates in the early and late hours to encourage intakes.
