November is Pet Diabetes Month!๐๐
Diabetes in our pets occurs when their body isnโt producing enough insulin, or develops an insulin resistance resulting in the inability to regulate blood sugar levels. Eventually, prolonged high blood glucose levels can have devastating effects.๐ฉธ
Diabetes is more common in older pets, though it can occur in young or pregnant pets. With the number of overweight and obese pets on the rise, so is the incidence of diabetes.
Symptoms of Diabetes can include:
๐ต Excessive Thirst
๐ต Increased Hunger
๐ต Recurring Infections
๐ต Sleeping more often, or less active
๐ต Weight Loss, despite an increased appetite
๐ต Cloudy Eyes or vision changes (especially in dogs)
๐ต Excessive Urination or accidents in the house (sometimes noting a change of odour to the urine)
Early diagnosis and treatment is critical for managing your petโs diabetes. Working closing with your veterinary team to support your pet is essential and can include blood and urine tests, insulin therapy & administration, diet control, exercise, consistency, and lots of monitoring. Control is the goal, and with proper management your pet can live a happy, normal, otherwise healthy life!๐พ
If your pet is experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, please consider booking a consult with our team!๐ฉบ
