🐾Positive Reinforcement Baiscs🐾

🐶Command/Cue: A command or cue can be physical or verbal. Examples of commands are Sit, Come, Down etc. A physical cue will be a hand gesture meaning the same as the command. Raising your hand in an upwards motion bending at the elbow means sit the same way verbalizing the word sit.

🐶Positive Marker: A positive marker is a word used to tell your dog that they’ve done something right. Yes, will be the marker that I teach you and your dog. Your dog will learn that saying yes will follow with praise and a treat!

🐶Negative Marker: This is used to tell your dog that they have done exactly what you’re asking. “Ah Ah” will be used as a negative marker.

🐶Release Word: Ok is the release word that will be used. A release word is essential when wanting to teach duration. Using a release word teaches a dog that they may be done with a command.

*TRAINING TIP*

Ever wondered how to teach your dog paw quickly? Nilla will show you how!🐾

Step 1: Hold a treat at your dog’s nose. Once they lift their paw even an inch reward them with a marker like “yes” and a treat. If they hit your hand give them the treat.

Step 2: Once they’ve raised their paw to your hand a few times start adding in the word paw once they hit your hand.

Step 3: After at least 3 times of consistently hitting your hand with their paw start switching your hand postiton and ask for paw. *Say paw only once* Wait until they raise their paw to you and reward immediately. Continue this until they give paw consistently!

Does your dog know how to stay in place until you give them the release command? Drop a comment if you need help on getting your dog to master stay🐾

Having your dog learn stay is a very helpful command and a much different command than wait! Many people use stay and wait as the same command and it can be very confusing for your dog and may be why their stay isn’t solid.

Stay should be used as a command that lets the dog know that where you’ve placed them is where they need to be until you come up and give them the “ok” to be released.

Stay should not be a command used to allow your dog to come running to you when you release them this is wait.

Stay is helpful in situations like when your front door is open and you’re bringing in groceries and you want them to not bolt out the door. Stay can be used when you’re having guests over and you don’t want your dog to rush your guests, and many more situations! It teaches your dog that they are not allowed to get up from where you placed them until you’ve come back to them and given them the release command.

It also is helpful when you want to get cute pictures of your pup😉

The golden rule here at Pawsitive Pups is only say a command ONCE! Why?

When you constantly repeat a command to your dog they start to learn to tune you out and that they don’t have to do the command the first time you ask.

The 🔑 is to make sure your dog is focusing on you before you ask the command.

Wait it out! Your dog will know that they don’t have do it do it right away if they are used to hearing it more than once before you actually expect them to do what you’re asking. Say it once and wait a few seconds to give them the opportunity to do what you’re asking.

Give correction! Use a firm “ah ah” when your dog is not responding to your command. They will understand they are not doing the correct thing by your tone and will most likely do what you’ve asked when given verbal correction.

Praise and treats! Make sure to always praise your dog when they do the right thing and give treats if it’s a fairly new command! We are always very good at telling our dogs what we don’t want them to do but sometimes forget to praise them or teach them what positive behaviour we want in place of a negative behaviour
