Sweet girl Navy worked on calmly interacting with her grandpawrents tonight while we discussed training strategies that will be productive to the desired outcome! Navy, being a herding breed, is a bit of a work-a-holic! This means she will gladly create reps for herself if she thinks it’ll make the training game last longer. Tonight, we tried to show her when reinforcement is and isn’t available and tested out different ways to reward her using licking/chewing things which promote the calm Navy were trying to achieve! Way to go, Team Navy! 💙✨

This crew rocked it tonight! Rockin’ Reactivity is such a fun class to teach because I learn new management tactics each week! This group benefitted a lot from everyone in motion walking in the same direction in laps until the whole crew arrived, then were able to quietly head to their home bases to do our “rose & thorn of the week” before starting the exercises! Way to go, Teams! ✨❤️🐾

Bert & Betty were beating the “small dogs are yappy” allegations by showing off their skills downtown today, passing so many dogs and Betty was able to disengage and eat or sniff instead! (Bert doesn’t bark at pups, he just gives them the 😍 eyes). Way to go, Team Bert & Betty! 💙🩷

Monty had his first training walk in town and made soooo many good choices! He is working on building his confidence and learning that he has options to remove himself if he doesn’t want to interact with people! Today, someone approached us hoping to pet him, he walked halfway to her then decided to turn back to me without barking or getting stuck! That got roast chicken as a reward: big effort = big payout!

Is your furry friend ready to become a Canine Good Neighbour or are you just looking for proof some of their skills? Our new training club is here to help! Unlike a class, this club will allow you to practice at your own pace, on your own time with other like minded dog peeps and my training advice available as little or as much as you’d like! Every week, we will focus on 1-2 aspects of the test. Pesto & I will be practicing in the club along with everyone some nights!

🗓 When: Tuesday & Thursday, 45 minutes - 1 Hour each session (we will decide on timing amongst the group once established, no attendance requirement as this is a club, not a class)

These cuties had their first training walk and nailed it! They are so brave considering their size, no care in the world about loud noises, bikes or people! Betty likes to let other dogs know that she’s here while Bert just gives them the heart eyes! Such a fun little duo! 💙🩷

Parker is a very happy boy who can get a little overwhelmed at big family gatherings so he came out to build some skills to help these events be more relaxing for both ends of the leash! We started a relaxation protocol, introduced pattern games and games to work on amping him up then bringing him back down! He’s such a smart cookie, I’m excited to help Team Parker enjoy family events more - look out Thanksgiving weekend, there’s going to be a new Parker in town! 🧡

Lucie had Pesto join her for a walk as a confidence booster, she enjoyed his company and even snuck him a couple kisses but there were some barking dogs who really worried her. We are going to introduce “noise parties” with dogs barking on YouTube at a low level while Lucie is in her backyard with lots of space! 💚

Betty finished up her reactivity program by walking with lil Enzo the Pom in her neighbourhood! She is showing so much improvement and we are excited to introduce her to a brand new friend tomorrow night! 🩷

Betty had her first in town training session with her mom! I’ve walked her in town before but we know that most dogs are on their best behaviour for their trainer! Team Betty did fabulously! She passed people, bikes and loud noises with ease and was able to disengage from dogs with distance! She was easily redirected if we had time to find somewhere to engage her in sniffing instead of worrying about dogs! Way to go, Team Betty! 💖

Bailey and I took our leash skills to the next level and I brought my coffee along for our training walk! We practiced a lot of verbal “switches” where he goes from heeling on the side where people are to the side where I would be between him and the peeps! This cue lets him know that love and fun isn’t accessible to him at the moment which helps his mom get from Point A to Point B effectively! If Bailey had it his way, he’d be working at Walmart as the store greeter! 🩵

Lucie had some scary experiences with dogs when she was younger and is now very nervous when she sees them on leash, this manifests in barking and lunging - the best defence is a good offence, don’t cha know! She also has a fear of walking past certain places in her neighbourhood. This is where Pesto comes in! We let her be loose in the Pawradise Acres yard with the choice to come check out Pesto (who was patiently wagging and waiting for her by the gate on the other side of the fence) and she didn’t bark or lunge once, she slowly made her way, unsure! Eventually, she checked him out and decided she had more exciting things to do. She was not yet interested in playing with Pesto despite his invitations but these things take time! Next week, we’ll be walking them on leash together in her neighbourhood in hopes that his confidence will help her feel more brave! Can’t wait to see her really come out of her shell! You are so brave, Lucie! 💖

We kicked off another round of Rockin’ Reactivity tonight with a fabulous group of dogs with a range of feelings about other dogs while on leash! Because of the heat, we took it nice and easy, just covering some management strategies! I’m excited to see these teams progress through this program! ❤️✨🐾

Bert & Betty came out to Pawradise Acres for their first training session, Bert was mostly along for the ride as we worked with Betty. She is almost 6 months old and a bit of a wild child meanwhile Bert would just like to do his own thing! We put some new games and management strategies in place to set Betty up for success and chatted about starting training walks for this dynamic duo! Looking forward to watching them shine! ✨✨

Milo loves his favorite human and thinks she should only pay attention to him so Pesto helped him see that good things for Pesto mean good things for Milo! In addition to counter conditioning how he feels about these interactions, we have a management system for Milo’s mom to reduce his big feelings! Though he is small and his resource guarding is mild, his mom is working to over come it as other dogs (who may be bigger than him) won’t find this appropriate and it could land Milo in a sticky situation. He made some very good choices today, Good Boy Milo! Thanks for being our helper, Pesto - treats and cuddles, what a hard life! 💙💚

A couple weeks ago, sweet senior Olive got together with some of her favorite pups and had a Pawradise Acres adventure photoshoot! She loved frolicking and snacking on the pup-sicles that her mom made for the crew! Olive is such a special girl, it was an honour to have her come play! 🩷✨

Renzo completed his Reactivity Program today and we ended on such a high note! He not only struggled with pulling on leash but this was amplified when dogs or certain people were around. Today, I brought both Pesto & Punk to be my helpers while we practiced walking near/by/parallel with novel dogs in his neighbourhood and he crushed it! He was able to disengage with his cue “this way” and had relaxed body language the whole time! Way to go, Team Renzo! 💙

Ollie the Labrador is learning to manage his big happy feelings around other dogs while on leash, today was his first session and we are trying to offer him play with a toy (which he loooves) when he can’t have play with another dog. I’m excited for this team to try out the new techniques we introduced today! 💛

Charlie is a good boy who likes being the only dog and centre of attention, he is learning to share the spot light with Henry! We put a management plan in place and started some foundations for counter conditioning how he feels about Henry in his space! In the meantime, their guardians have home work that involves relationship building for these boys ❤️💚

Baxter and Ruby had their first session today! Baxter is working on engagement and recall before we tackle some social skills while Ruby is relearning some skills she’s *forgotten* since having Baxter join the household! Baxter also showed me his very fancy sit pretty! Ahhhhh Labradors, you make me smile! 💛🖤

Seamus started his Real Life Recall package tonight which includes two 30 min rentals to practice between sessions! We added distractions tonight and brainstormed ways to add value to the backyard at their cottage (Seamus would like to explore elsewhere). So excited to see Team Seamus build a wicked recall! 💙🐾

Get silly w/ your dog!!!

“My dog won’t listen to me!”

One huge mistake I see is lack of ENGAGEMENT.

I think people are too afraid they will be judged.

I always say, people will find something to judge you about. Who cares what a random stranger thinks.

Engagement means connecting with your dog through:
- your voice
- motion
- play
- reinforcement

This strengthens your connection with your dog.
Often times this results in your dog seeking feedback from you, aka a dog that “listens”.

Give your dog a reason to listen!!! (& not a negative one)
