This handsome hound pup was part of our training last week at kids camp. He's foodie and eager to try new things! If you're into hounds (he is vocal like his genetics tell him to be), he would make an awesome addition for an active home!

Clarke is still waiting for his forever home..he is a fast learner, has had alot of fun with the kids at our Summer Camp, even got some training in. Did you know poor Clarke and his brother Lewis were found on a logging road in the Kamloops area? Thin and lost. He is doing so well now. He is treat motivated and walks well on leash. Come meet this handsome fellow or drop us a line for more information. 250-509-0297

Gibson and I had another amazing lesson with George Stambulic and his young 2022 Reserve Champion dog Sweep.

Gibson did his first 100 yard outrun! (for those like me that have no idea how far that is.. look past George to see where Sweep is with the sheep.. that about it!) We are getting closer to being field trial ready. We have a lot of great homework, including building jazz, clarity and confidence in our directions, lines and driving. Looks like we will need to start working in the bigger fields for practice. I'm very proud of this young dog! He gives 110% in anything you ask of him!

And it's always an honour to watch Sweep work. Sweep and George Stambulic will be heading to Ireland this summer to represent Canada at the 2023 World Sheepdog Championship!

TLDR: I'm a certified dog trainer with an education in Behavioural Psychology, 24 years working with animals, and 16 years experience training dogs. I'm currently offering classes in Castlegar, and private lessons throughout the West Kootenays.

It's been a while since I've written a little bit about myself and my training journey. So for those who I have not yet met, or are just getting to know me, here's a little bit about my background.

As a teen, I was a little rough around the edges, as they say. I got into some hard substances and rough relationships really early. Thankfully, I also found a part time job after school working at a horse farm in grade 9. I moved in to the farm soon after and was taken in by the family there, which is where my passion for animals and behaviour began. We had Husky / Rottweilers at the farm, along with stray animals of any and all sorts there, and I knew I was right where I needed to be. It sounds cliché, but buying my first horse at 16 very likely saved my life.

Though I played around with the animals on the farm, it wasn't until I moved into my own farm while I was in college (for a degree in Psychology), that I finally was able to have my own first dog. She was a red Australian Shepherd named Shylo. I immediately sought out classes, and took my first clicker focused puppy class in 2007. I quickly dove deep into herding, agility and tricks for the next few years.

During that time, I was taught a lot of old school, power-over and harsh techniques when it came to behaviour modification with dogs, horses and stock. At the time it just felt like 'what we did', and I was a good student. Some of it worked, some of it made things much worse.

I helped raise a handful of puppies with partners and friend through the years, and became the person that our small towns would seek out for help with their dogs. I tried a lot of techniques over those years, some really helpful, some make me cringe now thinking of.

It wasn't until 8 years later that I got really serious about my own personal healing, and confronting the conflict I felt about power-over models of behaviour, politics, relationships and the world. I have leaned hard into my own q***r roots, feminism, and a desire for a world that recognizes the empowerment of a power-with model.

Thankfully, I met a fantastic new-to-me trainer at just the right time to help me see how we can get the same or much better results from our non-human companion's behaviour through empathy, clarity and finally put to use the years of Behavioural Pyschology I took in college.

I certified with Karen Pryor Academy in 2015 as a Certified Training Partner, and have taken hundreds of seminars and lectures with world leading Behavioural Psychologists, Veterinarian Behaviourists, and highly certified Trainers and authors since then. Between 2015 and today, I have taught for Love 2 Play for 6 years, taught out of Salmo Rec Centre, out of the Kootenay Regional SPCA, out of Tails Pet Supply in Rossland and just launched under my own name, Eppic Dogs, in the fall of 2022.

I find I train others with the same mindset that I would would wish for myself; I teach technically - I want you to understand the why and how of what we teach the dog. I want you to have the mechanics to use wonderful motivation like food, toy or play, but also be able to motivate behaviours without the "show me the treat first" attitude. And that is just the difference between "basic" training and the basics done really really well.

I am currently running classes out of Kinnaird Park Community Church (the old middle school) in Castlegar on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays. You will also see me out in the local parks this summer teaching group classes in public spaces to keep things fresh and fun. For details on current classes check here - https://reneppic.wixsite.com/eppicdogs/services-1

I am also available for private lessons in your home or public space. Check prices and content here - https://reneppic.wixsite.com/eppicdogs/services-6

Day 1 of DownRiver farm adventure is a wrap. We had a wonderful opportunity to work with Kristin Thompson and get some pre-trial instruction.

Gibson and I were quickly humbled and reaffirmed at the same time. I love the opportunity to work different stock. At home things are generally really smooth and easy. On different stock, that are lighter, smaller, faster, and not used to a strong eyed dog, we needed to work extra hard to figure ourselves out, and had some moments of feeling like complete newbies again.

It took us a lot of running in circles, testing out how far away to work, and where all the draws are, but with a few great reminders and reflections from Kristin, we got them figured out, and ended up with quiet, calm sheep. I absolutely love just watching Gibs try different things to figure out how to move different stock. He is such a cool dog. When something doesn't work, he generally will just try new things until it clicks.

I'm feeling cautiously optimistic for the weekend, and really just very eager to get to play with my kids!

I have been having such an eppic time with these in and &Foundations classes lately.

The pups got to dress up a bit this week for their Costume class, and the weather has been so lovely lately that we've been able to test the focus of our young dogs outdoors!

The next round of Focus & Foundations starts next week on Saturday afternoons and this week on Tuesday afternoons.

And there is room for new puppies to join us in our Eppic Puppy class very soon!

I love watching these teams grow and learn together ❤️

Gibson is so happy and exhausted after getting to meet Canadian stockdog champion George Stambulic. We got the stamp of approval that Gibson is a very good boi, and George even says we could be doing field trials before long if we do all our homework.

Very grateful for the lessons and will be back again soon! In the meantime we are hoping to get our toes wet with some arena trials this spring ❤️

I spent spring break soaking up loved ones.. and of course, their puppers.

This sweet faced stunner, Tamo, is a quirky little love who enjoys long walks on the beach, and everything edible!

I will say, I missed the great lakes, and it was so lovely to get to spend time on the shores of Lake Ontario again.

Does your dog have 'selective hearing' even though they can hear the chip bag crinkle from the other side of the house?

Are you finding yourself the helicopter parent to an adolescent dog that can't wait to get away from you?

Do you find yourself playing a one sided game of 'Keep Away' when you are already 10 minutes late for work?

Get your Recall ready for summer with our Spring Recall Class!

This class is hands down my favourite class! Prizes, competition, accountability through a supportive community and a lot of silliness!

We build an "Emergency Recall" on a mechanical whistle, but you will find all your recalls improve greatly, as will your relationship with your dog.

Side effects often include (but are not limited to);
👀 A dog that will never take their eyes off you

😜 Public displays of silliness with your dog
❤ The relationship with your pup that you have always wanted

Hi everyone! My name is Ruth, and these are my two pups, Louise (7) and Mabel (3). The three of us make up Eppic Dogs' admin team.

I come with a lifelong love for dogs, and over ten years of experience in administrative roles. The dogs don't have any background in admin, but they make excellent colleagues anyway.

If you've connected with Eppic Dogs lately, we've probably already met - and if not, I look forward to assisting you and your dogs soon!

Some of you may have noticed there's been someone new answering your emails and replying to posts.

Please help me officially welcome my dear friend Kailee as the Administrative side of Eppic Dogs!

Kailee and I have been friends since our horses met on their way to Nelson in 2013. (Our meeting story is one for the books - we will make a reel at some point).

We've been neighbours, housemates, horsemates, friends and chosen family at times through the years. And since I have been training dogs, Kailee has always joked that when I "got big and branched out on my own", she would be my assistant... So, here we are! 😉

Kailee has a 9 year old border collie named Skip that has a special place in my heart, and was a goofy brother to my Aussies for many years.

We are both still learning the ropes of this small business, and one another in this way, and we deeply value your kindness and patience while we figure out all the ways to best serve the dogs of the West Kootenays.

I already don't know what I would do without her since she joined the team at the beginning of the year. I don't know if y'all have noticed, but I am terrible at the office side of things! (Sorry if I lost your email or missed a message!).

I'll be asking folks to direct all work related questions to this Facebook Messenger or my email from here on so Kailee can help me filter things and ensure I don't miss you!

Happy Holidays ❤️

“There is no wilderness like a life without friends; friendship multiplies blessings and minimizes misfortunes; it is a unique remedy against adversity, and it soothes the soul.”
— Baltasar Gracián

The holidays are tough for many of us, myself included. I have tried to start new traditions with different groups of friends and partners since my mom passed away, but none have quite 'stuck', as most friendships have evolved, shifted and lots have fallen away.

It often feels pretty desolate this time of year. I won't say that's totally changed, and may not until I really find my place in this world.. but it really reminds me how important the connections I DO have, are.

I am really honoured to be a part of the community here in the West Kootenays through my work, and be a part of so many people's journey with their dogs. It brings me so much joy.. and even sometimes develops into a deep, loving friendship like with these gorgeous people ❤️

Gibson's early xmas present was being brought in to hold goats off the shelter while I mucked it today.

Have I mentioned I LOVE this dog? He's just so lovely and helpful and lives to work. He didn't do much aside from stand there, and get a few chances to walk up and push them off the hay closest to us, but it was everything he had been hoping for. ❤️

Our last three Eppic Puppies graduated this morning ❤️❤️ It's always so bittersweet.

It has been such an honour to be a part of starting this off right for all the puppies of 2022. 😘

These two fashion statements melt my heart ❤️🤩😍😘

With an amazing physio team, laser, braces, tissue work, chiro and lots of homework, these two are back to leash walks in their new Back On Track coats.

Gibson's shoulder injury has revealed some structural weaknesses and imbalances we will be working hard to correct this winter so he can hopefully have a long and healthy career ahead.

Pita is working to break in her double braces that will likely be a lifelong support for her. They allow her the freedom to run and play without wearing out her damaged tendons, and therefore hopefully keep her whole body in better shape for longer.

It's never ideal to have injury or be on restriction, but I'd rather baby them now (and through the winter) with the hopes of being able to play and trial this summer without pain or more injury. 🤞
