It’s amazing what some structure and proper introductions can do for dogs!
Tacoma is reactive to other dogs. This past week he has worked on being neutral in the presence of them (on place, and in the crate). We have also added structure (rules and boundaries) into his daily routine.
He then started to meet the pack through one on one socials, and then finally a group social with the whole pack! This is a a clip from his first group social today. Good job Tacoma! 👏🏼
Next we will be tackling his reactivity on walks!
Establishing our communication system!
We use verbal marker words in our training to communicate to the dog when they are correct or incorrect.
One of the first things we do with a new board and train is condition them to our verbal marker words.
I do this by marking “good” and following up with a reward. We do lots and lots of reps of this so that eventually our dog has the same reaction to “good” as they do to getting a piece of food (classical conditioning!)
In this video I am working with our new board and train Xena. I am simply saying her name and when she gives me eye contact I mark it “good” and follow up with a reward. This is also how we start teaching focus! This was our very first session, in a few days she will be a pro at this game!

Dogs being dogs 🥰
One of my favourite parts of dog training is when the dogs get to the point of being able to enjoy their freedom! And the owners get to enjoy having a dog that comes when called 😋

Very proud of this team! Gus and his owner are doing a fantastic job in his private lesson program.
Previously Gus’ recall was hit or miss, and when he did recall he would throw his whole body into you, sit on your feet, and lean against your legs.
We wanted to clean this up as Gus’ owner would like to be able to bring him to visit residents at nursing homes and hospitals and it would not be safe to have him doing this to people. Gus now recalls reliably and sits or lays politely in front of his handler 🤗
We have two lessons left together and I can’t wait to see their progress!
Sadie has just under a week left in her board and train!
Her off leash skills have come along very nicely! She has a reliable recall, checks in with her handler frequently when off leash, and is able to have the freedom to just be a dog!
Seeing all the training come together is one of my favourite parts of the board and train program! I am so excited for her and her owner to enjoy their new life together ☺️
Gus started our private lesson program today!
He is signed up for 8 lessons which will cover on and off leash obedience, and manners in the house and in public!
Today was lesson 1, and we worked on the walk! He’s a very sweet boy who is eager to learn. Him and his owner are a great team and I’m excited to work with them both!

Jack’s owners were here for their first transition session tonight!
We spent time talking about how Jack is doing in the program, the training tools, and went through his go-home package. We then focused the rest of the session on the walk.
Jack and his family both did great!

What it looks like when the dogs are all coming in from their social time!
I have rules and boundaries in place for all the dogs here. It helps them understand that there is a time and a place to be silly and playful, and when to be calm. If they had no rules or guidance, it would be chaos!
If you want to improve your relationship with your dog, and start to shape better behaviour, add some consistent structure (rules and boundaries) to your house.
I took Jack to a busier area today to work on his structured walk!
Jack is nervous of new environments, loud noises, and busy streets. The more positive experiences he has in these environments the more confident he will become! Throughout the rest of his board and train program we will continue to go on “field trips” to new areas. Jack lives in Toronto, so becoming comfortable walking in busier areas is going to be an important component to his program!
