It isn't uncommon to see ocean wildlife off the coast of PEI, but it's the warm summer weather that brings wild Australian Shepherds so close to shore. We spotted one (possibly named Millie) yesterday. They are peaceful creatures, but watch out! They are experts at herding treats from your pockets straight into their mouths.

➡️ Here at Outward Bound, we are all about giving dogs freedom of movement in nature. We're also all about obeying leash laws. Long lines are a great tool for allowing dogs to explore freely while also keeping everyone safe: even the friendliest dog can seem menacing or scary to dogs or humans that don't enjoy the company of other dogs, especially when that "friendly" dog is making a beeline towards you! Having your dog on a long line in on-leash areas is a great way to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone, while allowing your dog to get the most out of their walk.
➡️ Long lines are great for dogs who are still learning recall!
➡️ Make sure to attach the long line to a harness, not a collar or Halti/Gentle Leader. They do tend to get caught on things and this could hurt a dog if attached to a collar or Halti.
➡️ Make sure the long line you're using is an appropriate length and weight for your dog! Movement can be difficult for small dogs when they have to drag a heavy long line. Likewise, large-breed dogs do best with a more durable line
➡️ Choose biothane long lines if possible! They're vegan (no leather), easy to wipe clean, don't get weighed down when wet, and don't get caught on things easily.
➡️ TL;DR: Long lines are a cool and groovy safety and training tool. Use them for decompression walks in on-leash areas.

Enrichment is so important for a dog's well-being, and simple enrichment toys/games such as snuffle mats and boxes, puzzle toys, and apparently muffin tins filled with treats, are a great way to #meetyourdogsneeds
without even leaving the house.
