๐Ÿถ Meet Taco the Pug! ๐Ÿถ

Taco the pug recently visited us at PEI Veterinary Walk-in & Urgent Care with a pretty severe allergic reaction that caused his face to swell up. Our team quickly assessed Taco and provided the necessary treatment to reduce the swelling and alleviate his discomfort. Weโ€™re happy to report that Taco responded well to the treatment and was quickly feeling (and looking) much better.

Prompt treatment is key when dealing with allergic reactions in pets. Itโ€™s not always known what causes these reactions, but it is often related to bug bites and bee stings. Weโ€™re so glad we could help Taco and are grateful to his family for trusting us with his care.

If you find your pet in a similar situation as Taco, please donโ€™t hesitate to reach out to us!

๐Ÿพ Keep Your Dog Safe at the Beach! ๐ŸŒŠ

Attention pet parents! It's important to understand the risks of salt water toxicity when enjoying beach days with your furry friends.

What is Salt Water Toxicity? Salt water toxicity occurs when dogs ingest excessive amounts of salt water. This can happen during beach outings when they drink seawater or play fetch in the water, inadvertently swallowing salty water.

How Does it Occur? When dogs consume large quantities of salt, their bodies struggle to process the high levels of sodium. This imbalance can lead to dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and potentially life-threatening symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, tremors, and seizures.

Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe:
1. Fresh Water is Key: Always provide cool, fresh water for your dog to drink. Avoid letting them drink salt water.
2. Limit Water Play: While playing fetch in the water can be fun, keep sessions short to minimize salt water ingestion.
3. Watch Their Diet: Avoid feeding your dog salty snacks like potato chips before or during beach outings.
4. Know the Signs: Be vigilant for symptoms of salt water toxicity. If you notice any signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or seizures, seek veterinary help immediately.

Meet Bear! ๐Ÿถ
Bear is known to do some โ€œcounter surfingโ€ at times at home and decided to indulge in some pizza dough over the weekend, which led to an unexpected visit to our urgent care clinic.

While Bear's adventurous spirit is admirable, pizza doughโ€”and any bread doughโ€”can be quite dangerous for our four-legged friends. When ingested, the dough can expand in their stomach, causing severe bloating and discomfort. Additionally, the yeast in the dough produces alcohol as it ferments, which can lead to alcohol poisoning.

At the clinic, we induced vomiting to help Bear expel the dough from her system before it could cause serious harm. This is a common procedure in such cases and helps prevent further complications.

Remember, if your pets get into something they shouldn't, don't hesitate to reach out to us here at PEI Veterinary Walk-in & Urgent Care!

๐Ÿพ Yasha's Wild Adventure! ๐Ÿพ

Last weekend, we had the pleasure of treating Yasha, a brave 1.5-year-old cat who wasn't feeling his best. He came to us with symptoms of vomiting, loss of appetite, and not acting like his usual self. After performing an ultrasound, we suspected a foreign body in his small intestine.

Our very own Dr. Ivan Zak took Yasha into surgery and discovered a long piece of a clothing tag in his intestine, causing multiple perforations (small holes along the intestine caused by the foreign material).

We're thrilled to report that the surgery was a success, and Yasha is doing great! ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’– He's on the road to recovery and feeling much better.

Remember, always keep those strings and other small items out of reach to keep your furry friends safe.๐Ÿพโœจ

๐Ÿพ Keep Your Pets Safe This Long Weekend! ๐ŸŽ†

With the long weekend approaching, it's important to remember our furry friends. Loud noises and bright lights can be frightening for pets, so here are some tips to keep them safe and calm:

1.) Keep Them Home & Indoors: The loud noises and crowds can be overwhelming and stressful for pets. It's best to leave them at home. ๐Ÿ  During fireworks displays, keep your pets indoors. Close windows and draw curtains.
2.) Provide Background Noise: Set up a quiet, comfortable area indoors where your pets can retreat. ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ This could be a cozy room with their favorite toys and blankets and play calming music, the television, or radio for background noise.
3.) Keep Them Busy: Provide them with their favorite treats or toys to help keep their minds occupied.
4.) Identification is Key: Ensure your pets are wearing collars with ID tags and that their microchip information is up to date in case they get scared and escape.

Let's make this long weekend a safe and enjoyable time for everyone, including our beloved pets! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

๐Ÿšจ Heat Warning Alert! ๐Ÿšจ

Hey everyone, summer is in full swing, and we've got some extreme heat coming our way. While we all love a good sunny day, it's super important to remember our furry friends during this hot spell. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

Here are some essential tips to keep your pets safe and cool:

1. ๐Ÿ•’ Avoid Midday Walks: The pavement can get scorching hot and can burn your pet's paws. Try to walk your pets early in the morning or later in the evening when it's cooler.

2. ๐Ÿš— Never Leave Pets in Cars: Even with the windows cracked, cars can heat up dangerously fast. A few minutes can be fatal!

3. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Keep Them Hydrated: Make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water. Carry a portable bowl if you're out and about.

4. ๐Ÿ  Create Cool Spaces: Ensure your pets have a cool, shaded place to relax. Indoors with a fan or AC is ideal.

5. ๐ŸงŠ Refresh with Treats: Try making some frozen treats like ice cubes with their favourite flavours.

6. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Monitor for Signs of Heatstroke: Watch for excessive panting, drooling, diarrhea, or lethargy. If your pet shows these signs, move them to a cooler place immediately and call or text us at 902-332-1808. This is life-threatening, so please do not wait or hesitate to contact us.

Let's keep our pets happy, healthy, and safe this summer! ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿพ Share this post to spread the word. Stay cool and take care! โค๏ธ
